I don't think you need to use maize just because you saw people who have a different climate than africa does use it. We have a lot of herb similar to maize that grows in Africa but can't grow on other continents. We don't have severe winters in Africa that freeze the soil. We don't have summer on most parts either. Where I'm from,we have the herb called "chikuyu",it has the maze texture,and it regenerates so,you don't have to replant every time. I don't see why you must plant maize for animal feed in the Great Lakes region.
