My 1971 Mach 1 Mustang
I rebuilt my Mach 1 from 1987 to 1990, all work done by myself, I couldn't afford to pay anybody as I was on apprentice wages for most of the project. All done before the days of the internet and mobile phones, even fax machines were rare! Lots of expensive phone calls to America and long waits for sea freight of parts. I kept her for 13 more years until 2003.

It's gone backwards in the last 30 years. Dry hops with two cars moving into stage was so entertaining. it's not all about times and speeds excitment is what brings the crowds. Bring back the 80's.

They need to bring dry hops back and proper 90% nitro cars that crackle. It has gone down hill in the last 30 years. It's not just about times and speeds it's about entertainment and excitement.

😳😃...Ahhh the dry hops...the good old days. I remember going to the races & watching funny cars, pro stock, etc. go thru them ...always got the crowd fired up. Wish they'd allow them to do them again.. 👍😎

They did it to set the clutches in the transmission, the new transmissions don't require the clutches to be set this way. FYI

I remember in this era the Cannonball car running dual fuel. They switched to methanol to reverse from the burnout and back to nitro after that. Had a small cylinder shaped tank for methanol behind the normal fuel tank.

Absolutely ANY footage of this LEGEND in action is Hugely appreciated. I watched Sammy several times,& set the world 1/4 mile record at the Pod with my Father as a boy. (I was with me DAD, EH? With a PITT PASS?! ) Lifelong shared memories created by something so Gobsmackingly astounding and spectacular,Atmosphericly, Visually and Audibly, Fxcking HISTORIC, and DEATH DEFYING; ( I saw when Sammy had a blow out 200 metres up the track, barrel roll mid air still rocket powered and go thru the lights on the roof at over 200 mph). Thankfully Sammy came back down the track sat on a bonnet with a mild concussion (we were told) Sammy gave us that, Me and Dad: It still resonates, pulling me back to when I was a mere boy and my Father worked long 6 day weeks; paid the mortgage and endless bills.. Then on Sunday Dad took me (A LOONG) drive each way and paid big for us both to see these wonders on his day off.(Thats the o/time gone on recreation) It never fails to humble me now when I think about the sacrifices and effort involved by my Parents to seed interests and show me excellence. And a 'Nice Guy' Genius Daredevil like Sammy Miller to entertain/enthral/ Enthuse and Inspire people to think outside the box and 'Reach'. I am middle aged (+) now and my parents are still healthy and active, thankfully. There are NEVER any arguments, only warmth and respect on the worst day. THANK YOU MR 'SLAMMIN' SAMMY MILLER! I am going to put this on his/an obit so his family know his spark still touches lives. (If I can).

They stop doing dry hops not because of wear an tear on the clutch or heating the engine up. They stopped when goodyear came up with a much better compound. Goodyear reps claimed the best hit was after the burnout. By doing dry hops that was being wasted.

In the days preceding the multi-stage lockup clutch, they ran two-speed planetaries with a manual clutch. They would dry hop them before staging. It's really cool to see them do it with the nostalgia cars.

What about the lackluster poor excuses of burnouts funny cars do today. Ironic that it was 1/8 mile sometimes 1/4 thick smokey "Chi- Town Hustler" burnouts that would engulf the cars, make them disappear then reappear as they would back up to the staging area, that brought the funny car to fame and a fans favorite during the 70's. It took skill to do burnouts like that.....Jungle Jim would hang his head shame if he saw the complete lack of showmanship today in the F/C classes
