    the young lad stood in the middle of the funny cars as they stage.......was me.
    I was the chief start line marshall at the pod for 3 years. and as my hearing today can confirm they were bloody loud,but what a rush to stand 3 ft away from a pair of nitro burning funny cars.happy days.

    😳😃...Ahhh the dry hops...the good old days. I remember going to the races & watching funny cars, pro stock, etc. go thru them ...always got the crowd fired up. Wish they'd allow them to do them again..
    👍😎

      They did it to set the clutches in the transmission, the new transmissions don't require the clutches to be set this way. FYI

    Thanks for posting. I came here to learn what a dry hop is!

      In the days preceding the multi-stage lockup clutch, they ran two-speed planetaries with a manual clutch. They would dry hop them before staging. It's really cool to see them do it with the nostalgia cars.

    I miss those old dry hop days..it was so awesome..heads up racing back then. Corporate sponsors have turned NHRA into a advertising circus..$$$$$$$$$$$$

      What about the lackluster poor excuses of burnouts funny cars do today. Ironic that it was 1/8 mile sometimes 1/4 thick smokey "Chi- Town Hustler" burnouts that would engulf the cars, make them disappear then reappear as they would back up to the staging area, that brought the funny car to fame and a fans favorite during the 70's. It took skill to do burnouts like that.....Jungle Jim would hang his head shame if he saw the complete lack of showmanship today in the F/C classes

    Yeah. I always say that if everyone would just remain seated, no one would have to stand up.
    Of course, standing on the fence always takes precedence over sitting in the grandstands, in my opinion.

    They need to bring dry hops back and proper 90% nitro cars that crackle. It has gone down hill in the last 30 years. It's not just about times and speeds it's about entertainment and excitement.

    if you mean VHT track compound....it's still used, except it's sprayed directly onto the track by track officials rather than a crew member pouring it in front of the tires. track prep in NHRA is usually finished by a tractor that sprays an even mist of the stuff all the way down the track...

  • @Joetrout
    @Joetrout 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    They stop doing dry hops not because of wear an tear on the clutch or heating the engine up. They stopped when goodyear came up with a much better compound. Goodyear reps claimed the best hit was after the burnout. By doing dry hops that was being wasted.

    miss the good ole dry hops...too bad they quit cause it tore up the clutch and motors

    • @Joetrout
      @Joetrout 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kissklassics it was not the clutch an motors being torn up. What happened is they "goodyear" started using a newer compound. They claim that the first hit after the burnout was the best available traction. By doing a dry hop that was wasted.

    • @nitro501
      @nitro501 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Joetrout No it was the parts getting torn up not the tires. kissklassics was right.

    • @Joetrout
      @Joetrout 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nitro501 I worked for goodyear in sales for 10 years, a Goodyear engineer told me that “with the newer better compounds 1 burnout and straight to the line, that’s how you would get the best traction from the tire. Doing 2 burnouts or dry hopping was just pretty much a waste. They would also last a lot longer and get many more passes that way. And yes dryhops are hard on parts but it was done “no dryhops” mainly because of the newer compounds.
