What is a Black Lion Audio mod?
The idea behind any studio gear modification is simple: Take the inferior components out, put superior ones in, and analyze every key aspect of design and signal path to produce a superior rebuilt product. But here’s the rub: No serious mod of audio gear is as simple as, say, changing a set of car spark plugs. And with so much studio stuff now mass-produced overseas, how do you know the people doing the mod have any measurable level of workmanship to raise the audio bar to thrilling new heights? You know with some of the stuff you now own - maybe even the very piece you need overhauled -- the builders might as well have been on an assembly line making waffle irons.

Are the knobs stepped or detended at all?
Gonna try this on my Fractal FM 9 Turbo and see if I can figure out if both sides have clocking settings. Currently getting crackling sounds trying to record scratch riff ideas to a little portable gaming PC using analog inputs and the USB to computer out on the 6x6. Thinking it's a USB Hub issue as I've checked the sample rates as is common with that sorta issue. Anything I should watch out for?
How does it compare to the 19" version?
If only it had a SC HPF. The agression this unit can bring to drums really calls for it. A missed opportunity in my opinion.
So do you press the termination switch in or leave it out.
Yes, press in the termination switch if the Apollo is the last interface in your clocking chain.

The BLA 2a seems faster slightly.
The capacitors are not exactly "high quality" but are still better than the ones competitors use. It's the first time we see through hole film caps in an audio interface if we exclude the Audient's MKS cap on the instrument input and it's a good thing.

@@blacklionaudio5271 You need to create a super high quality 2X stereo DA for mixing and mastering with two adat in and two adat out. Mastering grade DA for referencing and 16 in and 16 out for running outboard gear! ultimate setup.

I’m currently running my x8p with an audient evo sp8 for hardware inserts but there’s a -9 db volume difference between the x8p and the audient. Will there be a volume difference when running the exp 8x8 with 8xp through adat for hardware inserts?
Hey Bobo - Assuming I am understanding your routing correctly, yes. Technically, the Revolution will introduce a level change when compared to the Apollo. The Apollo's max in/output level is 24 dBu, we assume this to mean that when the DAW's meter reads 0, the related analog in/output will be at 24 dBu. Our Revolution EXP maximum in/output level is 16 dBu, that means when the DAW's meter reads 0, the EXP's analog in/outputs will be at 16dBu (an 8dBu difference). This doesn't only apply to maximum in/output level; the difference will be there in the same ratio for all levels.
Sounds great, did you have to lower the level of the signal sent to the unit to get that 2-3db reduction, mine seems to fly over 5db reduction with any kind of signal sent to it..

Why only the 1/4 inch jacks?
We figured most folks would use an expander like this with a patchbay, where 1/4" TRS is more commonplace than XLR. Also, we wouldn't be able to fit 16 XLR jacks onto the back of a 1U rack unit.

I love your products. Was you looking to make a rack mountable interface like this expander? I have been holding on pulling the trigger for a main interface because alot of interfaces either got the sound i like but not the i/o and vice versa
I can't get into specifics... but I can say we are working on bigger and better interfaces, yes. :)
Just got my 500 series Bluey and Seventeen installed in my PBR8. Can't wait to try them out!
Can you use two exp’s to double the in’s and outs?
Yes, but you'll need an interface that can also handle 16 channels of ADAT inputs and outputs - keep in mind that the chosen sample rate you choose will affect your possible channel count. Can I use spdif and word clock at the Sametime? Send 2 channels as well as clock my other interface??
Yes! Put the 6x6 in standalone mode; choose the desired sample rate, and you'll be able to send clock and audio from the preamps of the Revolution 6x6 over S/PDIF. Enjoy!

@@blacklionaudio5271 I bought it....1 Q....I saw that I need e stereo link cable to put infront of 2 1176....I have a rack (Bento pro8) that says you can link 2 compressors together with 1 switch behind the rack....Is that also possible with the seventeen 500? or you need to do it infant of the comp?
You'll need to use the link jack at the front, yes.

This is indeed so much better than the 2x2! And than many other interfaces. I hope the sound is not too different as the 2x2 already sounded amazing.

So actually, I owned the 2x2, but I had issues with the S/PDIF implementation, which was essential for my use case so I had to return it despite the great sound. I would like to know how S/PDIF works for this one? I also have some specific questions, if I can't ask here then please let me know where.

back in the day the dream was to get our interfaces modded by black lion in order to make them sound better. Fast forward to 2024 do you guys make a super high end interface that sounds better than most of the competition? I would like to buy some of your gear but im gonna need something thats an upgrade from my apollo twin X.

its obviously louder but it also sounds clearer once you level match. i would only say its worth it if you wanna skip a little EQ after the stock T4

**Disclaimer** for all Kemper users. If your Kemper head or rack is older than 2019 this doesn't work. The interface was already on my short list but I was sold when I saw this video. Not Black Lions fault, still great interface otherwise just saying.

Hi there! Just got my new 6x6 revolution set up! Sounding awesome so far :) Quick few question! When you are running S/PIDF for guitar modulars, are you plugging the instrument cable into the rev? Or the guitar modular? Also! will this unit run a thunderbolt 3 cable? I currently have the usb-c cable that you guys provided with the interface into my Mac mini thunderbolt port. I just wasn't sure if I should use the thunderbolt 3 cable instead? Thank you guys for everything you do!
Hey Christopher! Use the cable that was included with the Revolution 6x6. The Thunderbolt ports on your Mac Mini are also compatible with USB. Connect your guitar to the amp modeler and then connect the amp modeler to the Revolution 6x6 via S/PDIF. Let me know if I can answer any more questions!
Does clocking happen over adat? or do I need a device that has bnc connection. I was looking at getting an rme raydat pcie card with the Revolution EXP or the Ferrofish. Please help. Im upgrading from a firestudio project. Thanks.
You can clock over either ADAT or BNC. :)

How does this compare to the Apogee Symphony 16 I/0 Mark II, Dangerous Converters, Prism, and Lynx Halo far as conversion?
We've learned a lot about converters from modding audio interfaces for superior conversion... it's something we've done for years. We feel like the Revolution series offers the best conversion of any product we've ever made or modded.
Just picked up mine and I love the A/D so far! When I utilize the DAC, how should I control the output? I have no control anymore. I’m using this same set up with the Apollo. I have a central station I was using. Should I still use it or will it bypass that DAC from the EXP?! Help!
You'll definitely want to continue to use the Central Station - the conversion happens in the Revolution EXP. As the Central Station is a 100% analog device, you won't be losing the conversion!
your patch bay is set to being in loop, so you MUST always have coneccted device in front. Too bad...
