The Secret to Perfectly Fitting Handmade Garments
Today I’m sharing something that I know many of you have been asking about - the secret to perfectly fitting handmade garments! Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned sewist, getting that flawless fit can sometimes feel like a mystery. But don’t worry; by the end of this video, you’ll have the tips and tricks you need to create garments that fit like a dream!
*Sorry- I forgot to mention in the garment measurement section you're going to want to have additional ease after checking the garment against your measurements. Checking these measurements can let you know how much EASE any given pattern has. If you like minimal ease for a very fitted garment you'll probably want 1-2" additional inches. 2-3" for moderate ease.
Here’s a list of some highly recommended books on fitting and adjustments for sewing:
"Fit for Real People: Sew Great Clothes Using ANY Pattern" by Pati Palmer and Marta Alto
"The Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fitting" by Sarah Veblen
"Pattern Fitting with Confidence" by Nancy Zieman
"Fast Fit: Easy Pattern Alterations for Every Figure" by Sandra Betzina
"Sew the Perfect Fit: Customize Your Patterns to Flatter Every Figure" by Lynda Maynard
"The Palmer/Pletsch Complete Guide to Fitting: Sew Great Clothes for Every Body" by Pati Palmer and Marta Alto
"Ahead of the Curve: Learn to Fit and Sew Amazing Clothes for Your Curves" by Jenny Rushmore

    Rebecca, I hate the idea of having to make a toile, and possibly more than one (ugh!). What have you heard about those new AI-assisted services where you enter in a bunch of your measurements, and you pick the neckline you want, the sleeves, the other details (from a library of choices) and voila, it magically generates a pattern for you FROM YOUR measurements, that theoretically should fit perfectly the first time? My gosh, would that be a relief. Have you tried any of them? Could you please? We need a full report. Maybe it's just a fantasy but I would expect this approach to eliminate the parts of sewing I dislike the most.

      @SewPomona 15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Diane! I will say I don't do it for every project. I usually reserve the full toile process for evening and special occasion wear. That's why you'll see I make so many wearable muslins in a nice fabric that isn't quite as expensive. One of the women in my ASG Group uses a pattern software that does that and loves it. I'll ask her the name and get back to you. I like the patternmaking process more than the actual sewing myself so I haven't really looked into it.

    I admire your approach to your sewing. So pragmatic and organized! I’m a beginner sewist but had good success so far so that’s encouraging. Because I’m a beginner my approach is budget driven, that is I’m using thrifted fabric and notions. This is so my mistakes aren’t costly. I’m slowly building up a lovely stash of silks and special fabrics, but it will be a while before I dare to touch them haha😅 I’m in Texas, it’s hot here a lot too so you have me some good ideas there. I’d love to see a video dedicated to dressing for hot climate! I moved to TX from London 4 years ago so I’m still adjusting to the weather. I still have all these beautiful clothes that I will probably never wear again 😢

    • @SewPomona
      @SewPomona 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Love your approach! That is exactly how I started- less expensive fabrics that I didn't have to worry about messing up and lots of refashioning. I understand that transition to the heat! When I first moved to Florida after living up North (NJ and NYC) it was so hard to figure out what to wear. I would't get rid of anything yet though- you do eventually adapt to the climate. I love the heat now! I'd have a really hard time adjusting to colder weather after all these years. Happy sewing!

    I am just now learning this but after making any pattern adjustments, it is very important to check that the pattern is still balanced. Any small adjustment can knock the pattern off grain and your final garment will not fit properly. I made the Butterick 4659 pants and overall they look great especially for my first time altering a pattern. But now that my skills are improving, I noticed that my pants have a slight pull around the ankle. Before I start making my very first pair of denim jeans, I wanted to get the ankle pulling addressed. That's when I learned about "balancing a pattern." I found that my B4659 pants pattern was totally off balance and it was a total mess lol. The only thing that saved the pants is that they are more on the wide legged side so it masked a lot of my issues. Alexandra Morgan - "Fitting Pants: How to Find the Balance Lines on a Pant Pattern" video was very helpful for balancing my pants pattern. Anyway, I just finished drafting the patterns for my jeans front pocket bag, pocket shield, coin pocket and back pockets. Next I will be working on the jeans yoke and curved waistband. I'm getting so excited. I purchased cotton denim fabric awhile ago and washed it in warm water, but I learn yesterday that it's best to wash cotton fabric in hot water and dry on the hottest setting so that it can get all the shrinking issues out the way. So I had to rewash and dry my fabric. I would be sick if my jeans shrink after I have worked so hard on them.

    • @SewPomona
      @SewPomona 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I totally agree- you do need to balance out you're patterns and watch the grainlines while adjusting. A good fitting book is always my first suggestion to adjust any fit issues so you're not overcorrecting. I feel like when you're a beginner getting the correct pattern size is most important- and then as you advance you can work with pattern fitting books or learn to draft your own from scratch. The more you learn about fit- the more you know what's actually not working. Wonderful! I'm excited you're working on jeans! Yes- pre-washing and drying is really necessary if you don't want shrinkage since it is a cotton fiber. I always treat my fabric based on how I'll be laundering later.

    • @RoseGold...
      @RoseGold... 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SewPomona Yes, it is very important for newbies to get the correct pattern size. I like a slightly lower pants crotch for comfort and breathability so I had to make adjustments. Normally I wash my clothes in warm water and that is why I washed the cotton denim in warm. Apparently warm water doesn't get all the shrinkage out of cotton fabric and I didn't want to take a chance so I just rewashed the fabric just in case one day my pants end up being washed in hot water. I am loving all of this new stuff that I am learning.

    • @SewPomona
      @SewPomona 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good point- fit is so personal. That's really why I love sewing so much. I'm going to try the hot water next time for my denim! I use warm too usually fabric. Thanks for sharing that! I love all the tips I get here! Hope you're having a great weekend!

    What a great video - thank you so much. I’ve made the Megan Nielsen Ash jeans, which I love and am about to make some more. So many good tips in here! Never seen that tool you used to mark the fly topstitching line - what is that called please? Thanks again from the UK ❤

    I love making jeans, but I use a straight piece for my waistband as my waist to hip ratio is about the same. No curved piece ever fits me. Also, I learned on my first pair from Closet Core Ginger Jeans to sew up the crotch seam and try them on. I always have to pin out any curve on the outer seams to fit my straight torso. Handmade jeans are really fun to sew if you just relax and enjoy the process! Lots of great tips you provided. Glad to find your channel today!

      I usually prefer a straight waistband too if it’s at my natural waist. I will say I usually baste it together to check fit before sewing up my seams. I treated the natural version as my wearable muslin and used my sloper to compare the fit. When I draft my own I make a few toiles first before making them in denim. It really is so relaxing to take your time and sew up some jeans! Happy sewing!

    When I make my jeans, I use a twin needle for my top stitching, looks perfect every time, no uneven stitching, looks professional.

      Twin needles are a great option! Thanks for the suggestion. I did see they have the Jean weight now- I need to try some out.

      You're going to love it. Test a sample to check out the stitch length you like. I tend to go a 4, or 4.5 depending on the fabric weight. Happy sewing. 😊

    I was wearing homade jeans today to a quilt retreat. A lady came up and ask me where I got my jeans as she thought they fit and looked so nice and wanted to get a pair. She was so disappointed when I told her I made them as she did not want to try sewing jeans. Amazing the magic of sewing and being able to get a perfect fit. Loved your video. My jeans were sort of like the ones you sewed with the wide legs but a Simplicity pattern I got a few years ago.

    Thanks for this wealth of information Rebecca. My next project is to make my very first pair of denim jeans. I have the same undyed cream denim fabric as you have, and I purchased brass/gold hardware. Maybe I am old school, but I am going to attempt to add the rivets in the corner of the coin pocket and the top and bottom of the pocket curves. I purchased all my supplies several months ago so after watching this video I think I have everything I need. I'm drafting a jean pattern using my Butterick 4659. I hope that my jeans turn out as beautiful as your jeans. My vision is to make a matching denim vest.

    Thanks for all these great tips. It is nice know that the California jeans pattern has great instructions. It is going on my "to sew list," as well as the Tabor top you are wearing. I like the wide V-neck detail and the fabrics that you sewed it in. I just had shoulder surgery, so I won't be sewing for awhile, but I can still watch videos and plan! Thanks, Rebecca.

    Haven’t sewn jeans yet, but I have sewn a denim skirt, which was a great way to learn how to sew with denim. I agree, I love how denim wears as it ages, making it more beautiful and interesting - I do love your oldest pair! I hope this video means you and your family are safe from hurricane Milton. Your ideas and brilliant sewing is such an inspiration to me. I have made a couple of pair of jeans, but sadly I have gained weight and they no longer fit. So I have everything I need and laid out to start cutting another pair. I thought I would try the Worker Trouser from the Modern Sewing Co. a British company. Thank for sharing!

      Thanks so much Cate! We're on the East Coast of Florida (near Ft. Lauderdale) so very little effect from Milton, luckily. We've been busy this weekend taking down our hurricane shutters and moving all our outdoor furniture back out to our patio. Changes sizes is always a hassle when you sew your own clothes- I have jeans in my closet that are too small and too big. I checked out that pattern- really cute! Those will look fantastic. Happy sewing!

      Thank you for this vlog, really interesting to see different Jean styles and weights of denim. You make the sewing look so easy, although being organised with everything to hand must help. I love your top too so that is now on my wish list. I cannot find your Pinterest blog, the link didn’t work for me, can you share the name and I will search for it. Finally so glad you are safe, it must be so worrying for people. Take care ❤

      Hi Yvonne! I do like to stay organized- and have all my supplies ready to go before I start any project. Here's the Pinterest link: www.pinterest.com/sewpomona/everything-denim/ and my blog is Sew Pomona. I double checked the links (in the description) and they do look like they're all working. We're really used to the hurricanes after living here so long- plus we don't live directly on the coast so it's all good. Thanks so much! Happy sewing!

    Hi Rebecca, it’s sad that some companies don’t value life experience. I’d understand it if the job involved putting peoples lives on the line 🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s their loss though and it’s now opening up new opportunities for you. As one door closes, another opens. It’s meant to be 💞💞 I’ve just started a new job in a completely new field to me. I cared for my mum for 4 years and have been working in retail all of my adult life until then. My mum went into long term care so I found myself unemployed and unable to return to retail because of a life changing injury a few years ago. It was a scary, no, terrifying time. I’m 55 and disabled and thought no-one would employ me, but I have now found a job as a companion with elderly and vulnerable people and I love it. The right job will come along, just keep looking 😄💞

    Your college degree shouldn’t matter any longer after many years in business. That is crazy. Great advice I’ve heard from a business expert is that AI won’t take jobs, it’s the people that know how to use AI will be the future. Maybe a time for learning a new skill? Good luck to you and so happy you’re going to finish your degree.
