Vid courtesy of Ron Russik, Battleship IOWA Ops department. This is quite possibly the loudest shoot we have done. Each barrel, 2 pounds of compressed black powder. This was just stupid loud. Listen closely between the last bell and the first shot, there is a metallic click. That is the sound of the breach block coming up.

    It's amazing and extremely great that the 5-inch/38cal still can fire. As of now, those secondary batteries are over 80 years old. It makes you wonder if the main battery is still capable of firing.

      Should be OK, I didn't shoot the vid, and it's just a crewman's personal vid, I didn't take it from an Iowa site or anything. Are you the 'Moe' I know from the ship? Logistically, it would be a major undertaking to fire 'naturally', very expensive and then there would be the cleaning involved. Even though it was a pyro shot from a 'mortar', it wouldn't be cheap. It also is VERY loud. Car alarms went off al over, and my guess is that it scared the hell out of people at Ports O' Call, it was pointed right at them...

    That black powder will eat the liner right out of the barrel not to mention it is by the salt water. I couldn't think of a faster way to make it unusable forever. Bad decisions there. Sad to see one of the last of it's kind destroyed like this. 5" fine there are hundreds of replacement barrels. Not the 16" though.

    Such an incredible piece of hardware, designed by incredible people who had no modern computers, just slide rules and knowhow. Manned by incredible people who just had to know their jobs so well they couldn't possibly forget no matter how stressful things got. My uncle was a gunner. He worked his way up from ordnance striker to Gunner's Mate to Chief Turret Captain, then Gunner as a Warrant Officer then Ensign and all they way up to Commander, all in naval gunnery. He was never on an Iowa class but he spent most of WWII on other classes of battleships. In total he served on active duty from 1930-1959. I miss him.

    I do have some questions if you don't mind so I can look into all of this. Other than the video we all have seen, what is a source? I'm open to anything. McCain or not, the fire parties were not properly trained and men died. Hind sight. The AO's as well at the time did things different. You know my opinion, but that is for later. I may be considering McCains action at the time to the Navy standards of today. I'm open to your side.

I'll mention them here, but don't want to air them in public but I have no problem discussing them with you email. First, I did something bad at the beginning of my active duty. As a hint, These are the three words I associate with my actions: cowardice, betrayal, and redemption. I just realized the fight I do about the Forrestal fire is part of that last word, redemption. Second, the link below is a vid that I am featured in. It is 30 minutes, and is a behind-the-scenes on Iowa BB61. In about the middle of the tape, I launch into comments about Clayton Hartwig, the sailor blamed for the gun explosion that killed 47 men inside turret #2. Notice a similarity? Injustice. Neither of the above 2 items I thought of until you asked the question. And yes, that really is me in the vid. 2 million+ views. Nice turnaround. BTW, thanks for your service. Why the passion? I am a seeker of truth and make a big effort to not believe lies. I started this when I realized that I really wasn't sure myself about JMc being involved or not. As I've written, I have worked for a number of years with at least 2 people (ATC-1 J.J. Johnstone, and Lt. Bill Foster, A-8 driver) who knew JMc personally, served onboard with him and had him as an instructor. He was a good pilot and a real jerk. I have plenty of time (well, mostly). I'm 70% disabled, Blue Water Navy. Agent Orange gave me diabetes from drinking it during WESTPAC '72., so yeah, we can talk.

      My point is that I desire TRUTH to prevail. I think it DOES matter, because to let lies slide gives you the revisionist history like the Holocaust deniers or claims of a moon landing hoax, not to mention chemtrails. IMHO, to paraphrase Barry Goldwater, 'Extremism in defense of TRUTH is no vice.' I would encourage you to do some research, or ask me about your doubts. As stated, your doubt is simply not possible for several reasons, depending on alleged scenario claimed. Wet starts do not produce the claimed result, and ultimately, there was no plane or flight deck behind McCain only ocean, so there was no pilot to startle or missile to cook off.

      From what I have heard about the USS Iowa's situation the only thing keeping her from taking a cruise is the restrictions placed upon her as a museum ship. Well that and lack of crew to sail her. Other than that she's supposedly in seaworthy shape aside from turret 2. Her boilers and engineering plant have been fully restored and are functional. So asleep, not dead is apt. To be more accurate she is asleep with one eye open.

    • @jamespobog3420
      @jamespobog3420 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your comments about the propulsion system are incorrect. At the very least, the boilers need to be re-bricked and possibly re-tubed. No such thing as a 'fully restored' engineering plant. She is NOT even close to raising steam. Also every single sea chest is welded over, so she'd have to go into drydock. The main deck is in terrible shape, and in fact, has termites. CEC (Combat Engagement Center, or 'Strike') was virtually stripped when she came to San Pedro. Could she be put back in running condition? Theoretically yes. Practically, no. LOTS of time and money needed. What IS interesting is that except T2, not a single gun on her has been de-milled. But the guns....the 16's will never fire again, because there is no ammo. No spare barrels, no barrel liners, no powder, no projectiles. Nothing. Now, on top of that, there is the Navy's quote to Johnathan Williams, the CEO, "If the museum fails, she will go to scrap. We do NOT want her back." Lots of mis-info and rumor about her status, but them's the facts.

      Not gonna happen, for a good number of reasons. 1. The CEO, Jonathan Williams was told by the USN "We do not want the ships back." 2. All spare barrels have been destroyed and there is no ability to make new ones. 3. There are no projectiles. All have been destroyed. 4. There is no powder. All has been destroyed. 5. There are no spare parts for any of the legacy equipment. You can't repair anything. 6. The people who know how to run the ships are 50+ years old. 7. The Iowa has been officially designated "National Museum of the Surface Navy". 8. In a nutshell, it would ne a waste of money. There is SO MUCH work needed to do something like that, it makes no sense to pay to deconstruct, then pay to reconstruct. A far better plan would be to purpose design and build new.

      Not gonna happen for all the reasons mentioned above, BUT beyond that - the only reason they were updated the last time was to expand the coverage of modern weapons like cruise missiles. Today, those would be the ONLY things you'd really be able to use on an Iowa - give me a scenario where they'd need the guns? An Arleigh Burke destroyer can fire TONS of various missiles at nearly any target, from ICBM's to land targets, aircraft, etc - it's radar, sensor, and CIC setup is vastly superior to anything they could ever retrofit onto an Iowa.

    WARNING: I am getting very very close to kicking ANYONE who insists McCain started the fire off the cliff. Here is a link to an interview with Dave Dollarhide. He was the pilot of the plane just forward of McCain. People should probably read it before bloviating about how McCain started the fire. www.powmiamemorial.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Conversation-with-Dave-Dollarhide.pdf Now, if you believe he did, but are capable of engaging in civil, intelligent, intellectually honest discourse, we can talk, but mindless parroting of zero I.Q. conspiracies will not happen. OK, all you conspiracy believers, Here's a clean diagram of the USS Forrestal. Think you know what happened? Think McCain started the fire? Here's your chance to try and prove it. Despite many requests over many years, no 'Bleever' has ever produced any sort of explanatory diagram. None. There is a reason for this, they can't. Anything they produce MUST match the existing, known, factual evidence, That is video, pix, interviews, and documents. Another HUGE problem for 'Bleevers' is their constant droning of 'fake' concerning docs, pix, etc. Here's the problem. In a disaster scenario like this, 'fake' presupposes there are 'real' pix, docs, etc. Where are they? Produce them. I have worked in a couple photo labs, and a dirty little secret of photo labs is that when anything 'good' comes along multiple copies appear mysteriously, and get 'collected'. Should be easy as pie to find some of the 'real' stuff... Download the diagram and do a markup yourself. Lay out the scenario. I'm not expecting you to draw or insert little airplanes, just mark locations and directions, i.e. where was McCain's plane? What direction was it pointed? Where were other planes located that were involved in the start of the fire? Where was the plane affected by McCain's supposed 'wet start'? Was a rocket involved? Or did McCain drop bombs? I'm going to take a big chance here and assume that you are capable of downloading and marking up a jpg file, and also that you have some sort of scenario in mind that can be illustrated. So, have at it. I'll wait... www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ship/images/forrestal-line2.gif

As I have stated many times this vid deals with one thing and one thing only, the cause of the fire, and McCain did NOT cause the fire. If you have evidence that he did, please produce it, and by evidence I mean empirical, objective evidence, not some conspiratorial nutball youtube video full of lies and impossible scenarios. Thank you for your civility. You've taken the first step. The problem with all the MDI (McCain Did It) scenarios is that there is zero connection with reality. It is all fantasy, written by people who prima facie know nothing about carriers, their operation, or naval aircraft design and features. This means that to people who DO have knowledge of those subjects, the conspiracy theories are ridiculous fantasies. MDI (McCain did it) says he deliberately did a 'wet start' to startle the pilot behind him who then accidentally fired a rocket into McCain's plane. Physically impossible. The start sequence of an A-4 is by command, and the commands come from the Plane Captain, standing in front of the plane. The pilot execute his commands.. There is no random act by the pilot. Here's another extremely important point few know, certainly no MDI believer knows it. ANYONE on an active flight deck can shut it down at any time. ANYONE, from the lowest new recruit, to a visiting Admiral. If an unsafe condition or action is observed the 'emergency stop' signal is given and activity ceases on the flight deck. There are lots of 'white shirts' (safety observers' ) all over looking for things like that. A deliberate 'wet start' is horseplay and horseplay is simply zero tolerance. You see, there is a person up in PriFly called the 'Air Boss'. The ship belongs to the Captain, the flight deck belongs to the Air Boss. Even the CAPTAIN is afraid of the Air Boss. Pulling stunts like that could cost McCain his wings. It is physically impossible for a plane to have been parked behind McCain, since his squadron's planes were parked with their tailpipes hanging over the ocean on the port-aft part of the flight deck. All photographic evidence of the event and standard flight deck procedure proves this. It is physically impossible for any plane on a carrier to deliberately drop or fire a weapon while sitting on the deck. There are several safety systems, one of which is a complete disconnect of the weapons system while the plane is sitting on it's landing gear., Also, the scenario that a switch was accidently hit on McCain scrambling out is physically impossible. There is not just one switch, there are several, and they must be activated in sequence. By the way, I have the operations manual for the A-4 Skyhawk and that is my source. There are also several interesting illustrations of how many people are around a plane on startup, some of them with firefighting gear. The A-4 Skyhawks were not loaded with rockets that day so neither McCain nor the ghost pilot 'behind' him could have fired one. IF IF IF McCain had fired a rocket, the fire would have started on the other side of the ship farther forward. Footage of the fire proves this, because the men running toward the fire are running from the exact area that the imaginary rocket would have hit. They would be dead, not running toward the fire. McCain is faulted for going to his Ready Room after the fire started. Here's something very few non-carrier people know. Squadron pilots are not part of the ship's crew. The ship does not assign their General Quarters stations, their squadron does. McCain's General Quarters station, as with most squadron pilots, was his ready room. He went exactly where he was ordered to go.
