Damn I would give anything to have witnessed that in person. They should do this at the start of all sports games in Philly. The USS New Jersey sits right across the river from the stadium. Now that’d fire up the crowd
Good observation. Yes, there was a 'bang box'. Look at about 10 o'clock and you'll see a black gap in the moored boats. That's Ports O' Call, with lots of people eating fish dinners on the waterfront. I bet it scared the crap out of them...
When my wife and I were on the Iowa in 2012 I told the volunteers I would pay $1,000 to see those 16" fire. I guess we'll have to come back and see for ourselves! : )
Hey, 'James'..... 'Moe' here......IF you are still watching-monitoring this channel....I got peeps that want to see this video, May I use it for explanation of why we DON'T Fire the 16" guns??!!
Should be OK, I didn't shoot the vid, and it's just a crewman's personal vid, I didn't take it from an Iowa site or anything. Are you the 'Moe' I know from the ship? Logistically, it would be a major undertaking to fire 'naturally', very expensive and then there would be the cleaning involved. Even though it was a pyro shot from a 'mortar', it wouldn't be cheap. It also is VERY loud. Car alarms went off al over, and my guess is that it scared the hell out of people at Ports O' Call, it was pointed right at them...

Indeed, that's what insurance is for. An interesting side note is that on the evening of 12/17/76, SS Sansinena blew up only about 2 miles from where Iowa is now. Miles of broken glass, and it rained rivets... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Sansinena
Look at the left edge of the pic, about 1/3 way down the side. See where the moored white boats turn into a dark area? That is 'Ports O' Call', a little seaside village type bunch of shops. It used to be really trendy in the late 60's and has declined, but is going to be redeveloped. There's a popular fish market there and it's only about a mile away, I can't imagine what the people there thought...
in real battle , iowa using 6 bag full of gunpowder that cause the smoke is so much but this might using just 1 bag of gunpowder plus pyro smoke sorry for the bad english
I knew I’d seen a video of a mock firing somewhere. Someone attributed it to the Massachusetts but I swore it was the Iowa. So what on earth did they use for this effect, cause that was louder than the 5in that they do?
All I can tell you is that it was a professional pyro shot, a mortar in the muzzle, and a bang box. The event was a special one , a fundraiser for the org within the SEAL community that takes care of families that have lost their father/husband. MOH recipient from the Vietnam war, Michael E. Thornton was there. I ran into him (he was the first MOH I'd ever seen) and even though my navy time was 1970-1976, when I saw that MOH moving toward me, training took over and I automatically snapped to attention and saluted.
The people of Iowa raised a fair amount of money to make the museum possible. Several people from Iowa were constant media champions for saving the ship. There also are 20 sates with lower population than Iowa not that it has anything to do with why you get on for free with a Iowa ID.
That’s crazy. I should renew my Iowa drivers license, then. I was there with an ex... I came back home to SoCal because tornadoes are way more stressful than earthquakes and more frequent. Also: go Hawkeyes, eat turds cyclones. I’m not even a sportsball fan, but friends played for the team. Same story with UCLA vs USC. You know what tho? If you braved all of I-80 through Nebraska to get here, the real life equivalent of playing “Penn and Tellers Desert Bus” for NES to completion, you earned $30 of free admission. That said I happily pay the lousy $30 or whatever because -it helps take care of the ship-. Ships are not static, and need constant love and attention to remain afloat. Even though she is fed power via an umbelical cable from Port of Los Angeles, she constantly needs work and money to restore things or replace missing parts. Kidd and Slater manage well on account of their size, and they take crews of volunteers and missionaries to get stuff done on weekends.. so multiply the ships size several times, you can only imagine the amount of labor she takes. It’s worth it to see she doesn’t end up run down and sad like Queen Mary.
@@JohnDoe-zw6to Also too dangerous, by modern standards. The amount of powder involved is terrifying, and the potential for mishap far too great. They were very lucky not to lose the ship in '89.
The funny thing is that just a half mile down the channel was a place called 'Ports O' Call', a popular fish market. Lots of outside dining. My bet is that it scared the hell out of the people there.
Lots of people feel that way, but it simply won't happen. No trained crews, Turret 2 is 100% non-op, Must re-fitting needed just to put her in an operable condition, no powder, no ammo, no spare barrels, and most important, there are no legacy spare parts. Nice dream, but ain't gonna happen.
That black powder will eat the liner right out of the barrel not to mention it is by the salt water. I couldn't think of a faster way to make it unusable forever. Bad decisions there. Sad to see one of the last of it's kind destroyed like this. 5" fine there are hundreds of replacement barrels. Not the 16" though.

They might have been obsolete when my grandparents were kids, but GOD DAMN are those guns impressive!
I'm guessing the explosive charge in the foreground is the boom and the pyro is just for a light show. Still cool to see.

This is amazing!
when is a shell fired, it would be a lot louder?
My bet is 'yes'. I mean, each real shot takes 660 pounds of gunpowder....
And you would need to replace the windows on some of the buildings in from of it, from the shockwave.

That's a sound booster. That is an FX shot, nothing like what is done with the 5-inch.
Welp there goes every window in the vicinity
And also “ are your ears ringing? Mine are”.

Wow i love battleships but most of all its ijn yamato. Was it just a firework or real shell?
Pyro.
So I live in Iowa and I have always heard that if you live hear you can get into the ship for free... Is that true?
That is correct. Produce a valid ID and you walk on. Come see us...

16 inch guns
we will see 16-inch gun firing again?
I doubt it. We do fire a 5-inch mount on special occasions though...
@@JohnDoe-zw6to Also too dangerous, by modern standards. The amount of powder involved is terrifying, and the potential for mishap far too great. They were very lucky not to lose the ship in '89.
0:06 that I did not see coming. Here in Singapore the guns at Fort Siloso fire just a puff of smoke so nothing like this.

It would be awesome to see those guns at max elevation then launch fireworks.
How often do you do this?
Jorge Beaven The big ones, that is the only time. Next 5-inch shoot is either memorial day or July 4.
That was like a firecracker compared to the real thing. I highly doubt that was much power. Compared to the 650lbs of powder the "real deal" has.
Someone asked if it was real. I said “No, cause they’re still standing on the deck and the windows are in tact.
That was a private event for the SEALS. It was a FX pyro shot out of a barrel mortar.
Do the guns still work ?
Yes, they could operate. None of the guns have been 'de-milled'.
From my understanding the ships are kept ready in the unlikely event they ever get reactivated. Nothing official just what I have heard.
