    Hi Stella, I hope this message finds you well. I have a Bronze Winged Pionus, and I recently noticed a nostril blockage that seemed unusual. I took him to the vet, and they confirmed that it’s a blockage with some swelling. The vet also mentioned that there are dust particles contributing to the issue. His diet consists of: Wheat Sprouts Green Gram Sprouts Sweet Corn Apple Greens Papaya Musk Melon Watermelon Guava Pomegranate Fig Beans and Peas Carrot Beetroot Sunflower Seeds Almonds, Cashews, and Walnuts (Treats) Do you know what might cause something like this? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for your time and help.

    • @stellaandcharlie
      @stellaandcharlie 18 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Not sure if this was ment for Ashley over at Pionus tales, but I'll gladly give my input :) Always go with what your vet recommends, and consult them if the problem continues, I probably don't know better than them. I think the diet is completely fine! I really love the variety and different things you are using, my only concern could be the amount of fruits compared to veggies, so just watch out that it doesn't get more sugary :) I can't imagine the diet being the cause of dust blockage however, but two things I believe could cause is is either a dusty environment (so more ventilation and/or cleaning) or maybe more frequent baths to avoid dust building up on his feathers? If it is the diet or something in it, if you have the option try and see how he eats and maybe if the bowl or perch at the bowl could be given any adjustments, to avoid him from dipping his nose in the food if that makes sense. Those would be my guesses as of now, but I of course also don't know the situation, also in regards to the swelling, which is why your vet is your best friend here :) I really hope you figure out something and that he is ok :D

    I paid $2000 for my Meyer's parrot and i wouldn't flinch at paying it again as my Meyer's is probably the absolute best and quietest inside and bird ive ever owned. His also incredibly affectionate.. Id give the Meyer's parrot a solid 8/10 The only reason its not a 10/10 is because whilst they mimic whistles etc quite well they are definitely not the best talkers although can say a hand full of words if you are patient enough to be consistent training them.. As far as being a quiet bird id say 8/10 as they are still a bird after all and will chirp usually in the moring and on sun down. In saing this its still definitely not loud and annoying.. Highly recommend the Meyer's parrot if you can afford the up front cost. Here in Australia they are quite rare and will cost between $1,500 - $3000.. which really isn't to bad considering they have a life span 25-35 years if well looked after 👌👌

    • @stellaandcharlie
      @stellaandcharlie หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are very welcome! The cage is actually open, I just only open the small gate up top - If I make anything where I use the stove or something else she shouldn't get close to, I will put her in the cage and give her dinner so that she just eats and chills. Then we usually just keep her in there while we also eat, so that she dosen't get any good ideas, but she has actually never really been interested in human food (except if she clearly sees I'm eating pepper or something like that) :)

    I've got a question about your country's way of getting into college: Is there any way for someone who went poorly in school to get into med school or something like this? I ask this because back in highschool my grades sucked, but in my country I just take a test to get into college and if I study and go well on it I get to go and get into the college I chose, and even hough it's a hard test that is a lot of pressure, it's also a way that you can always work hard to go back and pursue the education you desire, even if you've had some issues in the past.

    • @stellaandcharlie
      @stellaandcharlie หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Sorry for the semi late answer. It depends how bad it is really, and a couple of schools only do test and don't look at grades at all, however most will take them into consideration... Med school requires a high grade average, but there is always the opputunity to apply via "kvote 2" which takes your experience into consideration and will also get you in to do a test - However, they will still look at your grade average, but only for the subjects relevant to the education. So if you didn't do great in arts class, they don't count that grade as part of the average. Sometimes the experience can be so good that your grades can be lower. Despite vet school having an svage of 10,3 I had a friend with 7 in average but a ton a experience that got in. I will say that if the average is lower the chances are really slim, but then you can always take courses throughout the year (where you might also work relevant jobs) to higher your grades and thereby your average before you apply, so I would say there always is a way to get in anyway, it might just take more time :) Another way is to take other educations or parts of them, so for example biologi college first to use as experience to get into vet or med school, and same with vet tech to then apply for vet school - The danger about that method is that you have a limited amount of SU, which is the financial support we get here while studying, so one might not be able to get it on the second education or at least parts of it. I hope that wasn't too poor written, but that is how most universitets work here :D

Sometimes, when we open a bottle of wine, we might say we "uncorked" the wine. I bet my green cheek would LOVE to chew on a cork. I never thought of that before. Good day to you as well! I LOVE that you are taking time and effort into research before getting your white cap. I must admit I haven't read anything myself specifically about Pionus, but more or so learned about especially anatomy from zoology classes. If you want a great book that tells about everything from behavior to handling and so on, I've heard "the practical Pionus" should be amazing. Here is a link: www.amazon.com/Practical-Pionus-Pet-Parrots/dp/0974797103 If you want a "higher level" read in regards to anatomy and physiology I could recommend a lot of zoology books, but this one is supplement reading on the veterinary education in Copenhagen: www.saxo.com/dk/ise-integrated-principles-of-zoology_bog_9781266263293?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiArva5BhBiEiwA-oTnXZuNMcnhEys0aNIxDP5j9WZkYezU3mKXWgRBke_0L_2eWXjPW11-MRoCTnIQAvD_BwE Hope that could help a bit, especially the first one I hear is a must read for pionus owners, but it is a bit difficult to get a hand on (and expensive) - Best of luck with your little guy/girl in a year's time :D

    Great video but you should have made a point of discouraging ownership. Truth is, larger parrots should not be kept as pets. They are too intelligent and live way too long. Also, most people are just not prepared and capable of maintaining the commitment and duty of care for their birds entire life. If you are for example 30 years old and buy a parrot who is going to take care of it when you yourself get old or depart this world? A larger parrot will have lived only half of its lifespan. Pionous don't live as long as the bigger birds but 30-40 years is still very very long. It is best to refrain if one can from buying a parrot. If you must buy then buy a tiny shorter lived parrotlet or budgie or similar. They can be fun too.

    HI there, loved hearing your experience at a US vet and am a bit shocked honestly. I am from Ontario, Canada and that is not how our animal clinics are here (none that I have been to at least and I have been to a lot over the years with different species...dogs, cats, birds). We get to stay with our pets in an examine room and wait for the doctor to come in and do the examine and consultation. The examine room is always cleaned between pets/appointments (no double duty). Sometimes a doctor will come in alone or sometimes they bring a vet tech with them to help. The odd time they will bring the pet to the back area (out of the examine room) to take blood or give an injection but they always ask for permission to do that. Dog grooming studios are another story though, they are so different from business to business. Some are amazing but some are very chaotic!! I just discovered your TH-cam videos recently and am absolutely enjoying them. I find you so inspiring the way you don't let anything be too challenging for you. You just keep reaching for your goals and deal with what you have to deal with. Very enjoyable. Thank you for sharing.

    We found our Blue Headed Pionus at a local bird rescue in Scottsdale, Arizona. We were not specifically looking for a Pionus, and were just checking with them regularly to find a bird to replace our deceased Patagonian Conure. We knew Birdie was the right companion when he quickly took a liking to me on my first visit with him (he didn't want to leave my arm). We were completely unfamiliar with Pionus parrots at the time but three years later, he has proven to be the perfect bird for us.

    How long did it take your Pionus to get used to you and want to come out of the cage? My BH Pionus (Rex) is around 17 weeks old and is my first bird ever. I’ve been able to transition from seed to pellets and he also loves chop. He’ll take treats out of my hand and I sit in front of his cage with the door open multiple times a day. I’ve started target training, but he will not want to come out of the cage or won’t allow me to touch with my hands. Any tips? Also do you have instagram? Haha

    • @stellaandcharlie
      @stellaandcharlie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Jay! I must be honest and say that I actually don't remember exactly how long it took for Charlie to warm up to me, but despite being hand raised I do remember her not being all over me instantly. It seemes like you are doing a really good job and I love that you have already transitioned his diet and is focused on training <3 It's totally normal for them to be a bit cagebound in the beginning, since that is their safe space, but I think my best tip would be to try and interact with him in enviorements where the cage isnt present. You mention he dosen't want to touch your hands, but does that include step up? If so, I would continue with target training at his pace until he is more comfortable with you and your hands to the point where he will step up and dosent show big signs of uncomfortableness. Once he does that, try and "get him out if the house", since this will remove the cage as his safe space and instead he will lean to you as the familiar aswell as slowly be desensitized to other soroundings. Take it slow hoeever! The first times they aren't at the cage and taken somewhere new is gonna be a lot for them, but the more times it's introduced and the longer they are away the more use to it they will get - It's just very important that they can be handled before you start with this training, so focus on step up and hand traning the way you are doing until that is :D I do have an instagram, but since there is like 1 or 2 pictures I'm planing on maing a fresh one and will let you guys know when that is <3

    Hi Stella! We love your channel - it’s both fun and super informative. Before deciding to get a Pionus, we watched many of your videos, which really helped us feel confident in our choice. We’ve had our Pionus (5-6 months) for a week now. She’s quite tame, taking nuts and responding well to clicker training. She’s not stepping up onto our hands yet, but we’re hopeful that will come soon. One of our big goals is to socialize her well, just like you’ve done with your Charlie. We’re curious how you manage to socialize and take Charlie out during the colder months in Denmark, given the Pionus’ natural need for warmer temperatures. Is it even possible to take them with you outside in those months? Or do you have tips for keeping them safe and comfortable in winter?

This way we can also still train being different places and meeting new people without being outside, and I'm so glad that the people in my family and friendgroup are ok with Charlie joining from time to time :D Then when we get to spring (often april/may) I can once again get her outside. I really hope that aswered the question, and thank you once again <3

      @@stellaandcharlie Thank you so much for your detailed response! A parrot backpack sounds like a great idea, especially to safely transport her during the colder months. Do you think it’s a good idea to already start taking her to visit other people, even though she’s not tame enough to step up yet? Since she’s still not very tame, we wouldn’t be able to let her out of the backpack or transport cage when visiting others. I’d love to hear your advice! (:

      No problem! I would maybe wait until you are surtain you can handle her, so that it's easier and comfortable for her to be handled at different locations and so that you can always retrieve her if needed :) So I would continue with that trainng while slowly introducing backpacks and travel cages via target traning - Then when she is comfortable you can move on to the next step which could be outside or at another persons place :D

    My bird bites if strangers touch her :-) But she let's pet / hold / restrain her. (Restrain as if for vet or grooming procedures) Otherwise our approach is similar. Minus the free flight since we have dangerous predators in the sky and our bird is a small conure. We take a backpack everywhere. 23:44 Animal behavior is awesome! Maybe you can become Veterinary Behaviorist and work with small animals!

    Never seen a video like this in my life but a lot of it is what I’ve felt for a while. I do cover my bird’s cage because we go to bed late and sleep in late, so I don’t want his cage to be super bright at 7 or 8 am when he hasn’t gotten enough sleep. But I love this method you have of making animals (and children) less sensitive to minor changes and disturbances, and therefore less prone to anxiety. Thank you so much for this video. • @stellaandcharlie
      @stellaandcharlie 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vuri3798 It is the only downside to it... I'm not a big person, so it can get pretty unhandy, which is why I only use it for longer visits and then transport Charlie in the backpack - The cage is just in the car 24/7 and then when we go somewhere I take it out and inside. So a bit unhandy, but the weight isn't too bad if you aren't walking with it for too long, so it would be more of a vacation cage solution than a "travel travel" cage :)

    • @vuri3798
      @vuri3798 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stellaandcharlie I see, it's a bit of a one trick poney then, I hoped that it would be versatile enough so I wouldn't have to grab a backpack (I've read reviews saying some of them smelled weird so people didn't feel confident to put their birds inside), but I might have to look more into it

    • @stellaandcharlie
      @stellaandcharlie 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Try and do that! A backpack is great for "going on a walk" without a harness, wheres the montana cage is good for traveling in the sense of transporting your bird and having a "travel cage" - I've also used it for picnics having Charlie in the cage beside me, but would never bring it for a long walk... So I totally get if it dosen't fit what you want to use it for. It does wonders in the cases where it can be used, but have the limited use in terms of long walks :)

    I notice you’re very responsive to many of your comments; and I’m looking for a bit of advice. I myself am a vet student, and am seriously considering becoming a practitioner of avian medicine in the future. Because of this, I want to get some husbandry experience underneath my belt with avians and am looking for a good species to keep. I want a bird that will fit a schedule where I can be gone or mentally absent for 30min-2 hr blocks, but still require a moderate amount of physical and mental investment. I’ve been looking into pionus, or maybe conures and parrotlets? Specifically the two that seem most appealing to me so far are green cheek conures and pionus parrots. I would have at least a solid hour to give in undivided mental attention, and at the most 3.5 or more. Since this is a goal I plan to meet in the next 1-2 years, money isn’t as much of a concern but is still something I am factoring into the equation. I’m also pretty noise tolerant (my partner as a budgie that talks nonstop, so there’s always a warble in the background) but really shrill shrieks for long periods can really stress me out. Do you have any thoughts? Any other comments feel free to give your thoughts as well

    • @stellaandcharlie
      @stellaandcharlie 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Void! I totally get the dilemma, cause I've been there myself.... I can't say I have experience with Conures, but I'll gladly share why I ended up choosing Pi's and the differences I know of. So based on what you write, I actually think it comes down to what you condition the bird too (wether it's a conure or pionus), since its all in the routines. Training and desensitizing to a routine where you can leave for those hours aswell as the attention you can provide. I will say however than while a lot can be trained the "stereo types" can be used as a guide to what will be easier for the bird to adapt too. For example the Pi might have an easier time entertaining itself, while conures (while still trainable to tolorate it more) usually require more of your attention. As for what is the "species norm" in those two species I have a list of what my impression is: - Pi are more chill, while Conure are more energetic - Conure are more outgoing, where Pi's are more reserved - Conure wants to be involved more, where Pi's dont mind having alone time - Conure are more playfull, Pi's would rather chill - Conure are more cuddly, while Pi's arent as touchy feely So it depends on what you want in a bird - A playfull snuggle buddy (then I would go conure), or a chill "just following along" companion (then Pi's might be better). But again, the indivual and the routines you give them have more to say in my opinion. Noice wise, I've heard "quiet" conures and loud Pi's and vers visa, so thats a difficult one... My next video is on routines, and exactly what you can do to make life "easier" owning bird, so you can maybe get some more questions answered there aswell. I hope that helped, else feel free to ask away :D

    I loved this! And I love how you've used this as an amazing educational experience! I've always said not all birds need a companion, looking back, quaffle would have never cared if I got her a friend. Im glad I did as we're out a lot but for someone who is home regularly it's not essential. After 6 months, ABBA potentially got used to routine, diet conversion and training etc. And Charlie probably would of got used to her. But as you say it's time and a big commitment taking on a 2nd bird. At the end of the day, you gave it a trial, you learnt a lot! And you knew what was best for you and Charlie. Also that's an interesting routine for Abba

      Thank you Ashley! I'm also glad I gave it chance, and thank you so much for the advice on the way :) I can totally see what you mean with Quaffle, though now I kind of see as the big sister that has to pretend she dosen't like the little one, yet she would miss Lyra if she wasn't there ;) Its comfording reading Charlies bodylanguage and seeing that she is really content and that's both in regards to hormones and overall her being on her own.

    • @PionusTales
      @PionusTales 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @stellaandcharlie that's exactly quaffle to a T right now 🤣 and Lyra is similar to Abba in the sense that she's intrigued by other birds. Typical little sister trying to impress big sister. If she's more than content, and you're happy with how she is, that's all that matters. Like I said if you were able to give it 6 months then yeah, it most likely would of worked out. But as you say it's a lot of extra time for you to put in all that extra effort. And that's so important for people considering a 2nd bird or a rehome or rescue as they may need a lot of work. So this video is great for people to consider what they're getting in for. Lyra used to be soooo quiet, and now she's the noisiest of the 2 😒
