I do cover my bird’s cage because we go to bed late and sleep in late, so I don’t want his cage to be super bright at 7 or 8 am when he hasn’t gotten enough sleep. But I love this method you have of making animals (and children) less sensitive to minor changes and disturbances, and therefore less prone to anxiety. Thank you so much for this video. Great informative video! I don't follow the clock with my routine either. I like to sleep in on the weekends or my days off. I do cover my birds though for various reasons but not fully. Thanks for sharing!

My bird bites if strangers touch her :-) But she let's pet / hold / restrain her. (Restrain as if for vet or grooming procedures) Otherwise our approach is similar. Minus the free flight since we have dangerous predators in the sky and our bird is a small conure. We take a backpack everywhere. 23:44 Animal behavior is awesome! Maybe you can become Veterinary Behaviorist and work with small animals!

Love your videos & Charlie! :) I’m getting pionus’ next year I’m starting with a white capped & am doing my due dilligence. Learning from a few diff pionus tubers as well as my breeder. I would like to know some books if u know any that you think would help me further in their diet, free flying, handling, health etc?

I must admit I haven't read anything myself specifically about Pionus, but more or so learned about especially anatomy from zoology classes. If you want a great book that tells about everything from behavior to handling and so on, I've heard "the practical Pionus" should be amazing. Hi Stella! We love your channel - it’s both fun and super informative. Before deciding to get a Pionus, we watched many of your videos, which really helped us feel confident in our choice. We’ve had our Pionus (5-6 months) for a week now. She’s quite tame, taking nuts and responding well to clicker training. She’s not stepping up onto our hands yet, but we’re hopeful that will come soon. One of our big goals is to socialize her well, just like you’ve done with your Charlie. We’re curious how you manage to socialize and take Charlie out during the colder months in Denmark, given the Pionus’ natural need for warmer temperatures. Is it even possible to take them with you outside in those months? Or do you have tips for keeping them safe and comfortable in winter?

No problem! I would maybe wait until you are surtain you can handle her, so that it's easier and comfortable for her to be handled at different locations and so that you can always retrieve her if needed :) So I would continue with that trainng while slowly introducing backpacks and travel cages via target traning - Then when she is comfortable you can move on to the next step which could be outside or at another persons place :D

Hi, I love your videos, I'll buy the Pionus in a few months, and thanks to your videos I'm understanding a lot of things to make it live better. Did you get Charlie raised by hand or by his parents?
I know my bird prefers to have a sleep rythm but i never covered his cage i have seen that at first i was very quiet when he was asleep and anything would trigger him into a panic now i talk normaly and he doesn't have any night terrors !
Aw so glad to hear you found our what he prefers! I was wondering if I should have mentioned cockatiels since they get them a lot from what I hear (I just see one in your pic). But I'm so glad it seems to also have a positive effect on them in some cases :D
@@vuri3798 It is the only downside to it... I'm not a big person, so it can get pretty unhandy, which is why I only use it for longer visits and then transport Charlie in the backpack - The cage is just in the car 24/7 and then when we go somewhere I take it out and inside. So a bit unhandy, but the weight isn't too bad if you aren't walking with it for too long, so it would be more of a vacation cage solution than a "travel travel" cage :)

Try and do that! A backpack is great for "going on a walk" without a harness, wheres the montana cage is good for traveling in the sense of transporting your bird and having a "travel cage" - I've also used it for picnics having Charlie in the cage beside me, but would never bring it for a long walk... So I totally get if it dosen't fit what you want to use it for. It does wonders in the cases where it can be used, but have the limited use in terms of long walks :)
How long did it take your Pionus to get used to you and want to come out of the cage? My BH Pionus (Rex) is around 17 weeks old and is my first bird ever. I’ve been able to transition from seed to pellets and he also loves chop. He’ll take treats out of my hand and I sit in front of his cage with the door open multiple times a day. I’ve started target training, but he will not want to come out of the cage or won’t allow me to touch with my hands. Any tips? Also do you have instagram? Haha
Hi Jay! I must be honest and say that I actually don't remember exactly how long it took for Charlie to warm up to me, but despite being hand raised I do remember her not being all over me instantly. It seemes like you are doing a really good job and I love that you have already transitioned his diet and is focused on training

Next step is step up and hopefully with that I can get him comfortable enough to come out. I bought this huge Java tree for him to chill on but he doesn’t even come out of the cage haha
