    St Helens was ruined by illegal genetic experimentation in the 1980s by Pilkington Glass. The introduction of three extra chromosomes did not have the desired result of increased work capacity. All test subjects turned into Scousers, and the town had to be abandoned.

      No comment! I do wonder whether the older generation of St. Helens accent I'm used to from family members, will eventually die out and be replaced with the almost-Scouse one we hear more and more of.

    Easy to watch. Preston has so much more history you know, so many more interesting buildings too. James was proclaimed king on the flag market in 1715 during the jacobite rebellion, the last battle fought on English soil. The 12c friary once off friargate. The ending of the civil was in 1646 or 48 in the 1st battle of preston. A church has stood on the site of the minster since 640 ad, the anglo saxon burials situated in the south east corner of the church yard. Charles dickens wrote his novel hard times after a 2nd visit to preston during the cotton famin. The characters in the book all being prestonians who he met. The cockpit that dickens visited is situated down the medieval thourafare of stoneygate has has a blue plaque. Ben franklin stayed at the building thats now neros ont corner of orchard street(blue plaque again) The town boaste 80 odd mills and was the 4th biggest cotton producer in england. We also had the lowest av age outside of london too, av of 19 due to infant death between 1801 and 1901 (see book deasly dwellings). Miller arcade u mentioned is 1st building outside london to be steel framed and st wilfreds school on fox st is 1st building outside of london to be lit by gas. The tee total movement started by joseph livsey in preston. Main sprit weind once called mince pit lane due to the mince pit or well that was near the bottom near the now culverted river syke (hence syke st) in 1700's was valled petticoat lane dur to the girls attire who visited the well to collect water. I could go on lol Great vid thpugh. Im an amateur local historian so any questions just ask stephenwhitfield8@gmail.com

      I doff my cap to you there, I didn't know a lot of that information, aside from the battle of Preston and about the gas lighting. I've always thought, since moving to Preston, that more should be made of its history.

    I wonder if you are aware that the council has given permission, for the old workhouse on Watling St Rd, which is on this film, to be demolished to make way for a "Community Centre". It will be directly opposite the new mosque and apparently will consist of classrooms, kitchen, childcare facilities and more. Much of the surrounding land will be for car parking. As this is is a grade 2 listed building, in Fulwood, Preston, a Conservation Area. Any idea how this situation is possible please???

    • @TheBestTravelChannel
      @TheBestTravelChannel 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wasn't aware of that, but after a quick browse online I can see there were plans put forward by the Bhailoks. From the plans at least, the workhouse wouldn't be demolished, but would contain various things of use to some of the community but perhaps not all, if the SMRC moved out. The building itself is massive and I don't know if it's being used to its full potential, but it's about whether a potential new owner and users will look after it. Whatever the future brings, I just hope it doesn't end up mysteriously in flames like a fair few of Preston's historic buildings have.

    A great video which shows some of the beauty you can find in Burnley. If anyone is interested in visiting, you can easily find on the web many more amazing places/spaces. What a change, as many have already commented, on showing the good. Most videos, if they want to set a scene that Burnley is 'this way inclined', or has voted the 'wrong way', only show the run down areas. This is partly due to neglict from the council. As a resident of the 'run down areas', I know that a couple of generations ago, these areas were far from run down and were full of home owners that respected their homes, the area, themselves, and the town. Sadly, towns like Burnley, across the country, have been left behind.
