    Great idea and video; agree with your choices. Inwould have added the Beatles but not sure if they wver released a double album. With Queen, A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races could have worked as a double album, as well as, Queen II. Moreover, with some of your choices (Uriah Heep, Triumph, BOC and a couple more that escape me right now), I'm not sure they were big enough draws where the label would have afforded the bands that type of extravaganza.

    I ordered a 4003s in 1981. Black on black, no binding, dot markers. I got quoted $650. It arrived, and it was beautiful. They tried to go up to $1100 on me. They eventually honored the $650, but would'nt give me the case. The bridge was falling down in the pit, and one saddle adjustment screw was fused with the saddle. The mute adjustment knobs on the bridge were serrated strap knobs that gouged your wrist, and there was a distortion in the neck at the low F. The bridge pickup went out in less than a year. I did not send it back because I worked on the problems. It had an uneven tonal response, but that suited me. I got glammed into trading it for a strat after a decade, and I regret it.

  • @dog61
    @dog61 23 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    There aren't any tonal differences between a 4003 and 4003s. The only electronics difference between the two models is the 4003 has two outputs. One is mono, one is stereo where the 4003s is only mono. Same pickups, same mono wiring same vintage/modern push pull switch. All the other differences are cosmetic. The 4003 has neck binding, shark tooth inlays and bound body with no body contours. The 4003w and 4003sw which are the walnut versions will probably sound a bit different the the maple versions, but I've never owned a "w" model. Preorders are extremely common in the Rickenbacker world for anything that isn't the most popular. As a long time rick owner and player, unless someone is interested in one of the most popular models, find a reputable smaller online dealer and work with them. They'll be a lot more familiar with rick production and will work with you to get exactly what you want. I can't recommend any particular dealer as the one I used was an unfortunate victim of the pandemic.

    Cool video, and agree pickings are pretty slim for the first wave of British metal. Having said that, it would be interesting to know how people or journalists referred to the bands you mentioned in the video (what a God awful structure for a sentence); basically, was any point in time before the NWOBHM acronym was born that mentioned heavy metal as a music genre. Did everything start as heavy rock (including Cream, Hendrix, etc) and then morphed into heavy metal?

    • @djacobmadrigal
      @djacobmadrigal 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’m not sure. I’ll have to look that up: when was the term heavy metal first used to describe music.

    • @djacobmadrigal
      @djacobmadrigal 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I just found a paper or abstract online by Deena Weinstein who talks about who first came up with the term heavy metal to describe a genre of music. It is debated or contested who did it first; some evidence suggests writer/critic Mike Saunders in his review of Humble Pie’s As Safe As Yesterday Is album but Sandy Perlman who was involved with Blue Oyster Cult said he coined the term. There are others who claim they came up with it first. Humble Pie would be as early as 1971.

    I guess I don’t mind Humble Pie doing covers bc they are mostly not well know by the mainstream at the time and Humble Pie makes these songs their own where Frampton’s cover of a Stone’s classic is overshadowed by the original and is quite lackluster. In addition it occurred to me that Ray Charles’ rendition of I Don’t Need No Doctor is also a cover.

  • @antonnee

      True they are covers except ‘I’m ready’ I think; sometimes I forget they are mostly or all covers bc they are so ingrained in me as part of me like Heep’s Abominog are mostly covers. I Don’t Need No Doctor by Ray Charles is actually a cover too. I forget who did that song first. I just remember hearing his version as a child way before Humble Pie’s version. The list of bands that I should like but don't is pretty extensive (you've mentioned a few in the video), so won't even go into that 38:30 list. But, for me, what decides of I like a band is the vocals; if I cannit get het into the vocals, I won't get into the band no matter how great the musicianship might be.

    • @djacobmadrigal
      @djacobmadrigal 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      One of the reasons I don't like Death Metal. Some great guitar, bass, and drums but terrible vocals. One person once suggested i just tune out the vocals. Impossible for me.

    • @antonnee
      @antonnee 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @djacobmadrigal I understand completely. I've made peace with death metal vocals, somewhat, and can listen to it for short periods of time. However, I cannot get into black metal at all, the shrieking vocals and nonstop blast beats just tire me out in seconds; I do like so,e atmospheric black metal, like Agalloch, because the songs are mostly instrumental, tranquil and slow paced. I have the same issue with. and that have a singer with clean vocals; if the voice doesn't convince, I'm out.

  • @antonnee
    @antonnee 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Agree. Labels/categories/subcategories are ok but, at the moment, it's gone completely out of hand. Maybe stopping at a couple of subgenres is the way to go like doom death metal, blackened thrash metal, etc. Otherwise,what the heck would a band described as post industrial avantgarde Celtic symphonic metal even sound like? Just ridiculous; might as well just call it fruit cocktail metal, a bit of everything is included.

  • @antonnee
    @antonnee 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Agree with you. All the arguing back and forth takes away some of the enjoyment of the music; if nothing else, argue but keep it private. Fat chance of this happening though with the rise of social media; an industry, so to speak, that thrives in highlighting the worst side of human beings. Also, 100% agree with you regarding talking about someone who has died. It should be a time of forgiveness and grace as the person lost the battle that, in the end, we will also lose. Just lay down your weapon, and move on as there is no need to pile on someone who is no longer here.

  • @antonnee
    @antonnee 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Funny, Blackout was my first Scorpions album too. Both records highlighted are great but my vote would go to Blackout for sentimental reasons too. Maybe, for the hit factor Sting ahould be ahead by just a tad but hard to argue against either opus. I am all for an unboxing of your gear when you get it, and even in for some playing. Maybe not a whole song but a couple of minutes jsut to get an idea whatnit sounds like and to get a run down of the pedals, amps, etc you are using.

  • @antonnee
    @antonnee 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Agree with you that guitar solos are not stupid. Soloing is an art and not as easy as musiciams make it look; I'm learning to play guitar and I'm having trouble with some of the riffing, and cannot imagine the mess I'll make when I get to the solo parts. Also, agree with you that, maybe, not every song needs a guitar solo as it can become a cliche as it's expected. However, it would be interesting if bands did more solos with other instruments be that bass, drums, keyboards, etc. The sax solo in the song Urgent by Foreigner smokes. Also, it would be interesting to see what the songs from all these grunge/alt rock and metal bands would soumd like with a guitar solo. A good example would be Pearl Jam's Alive; the guitar solo on that song is fire.

  • @antonnee
    @antonnee 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Agree with your take completely. It's a cash grab and a way to fleece customers. I love music but I have to admit that this nonsense has turned me off, somewhat, to music. One thing you touched upon and I'll expand on a little bit is the anniversary issues/reissues. Do people really need a 20 year anniversary, 25 year anniversary, 30 year anniversary of the same album? Just stick to a format and end the foolishness, make it the 25th anniversary, 50th anniversary, 75th anniversary 😳😳😳, etc. It's ridiculous that you have the 10th anniversary, 16th anniversary, 22.5 year anniversary. Also, for legacy bands mostly, if you have demos of songs that for one reason or another didn't make itnto the album and include them in an anniversary reissue, produce the damn song and bring itnto the level of the released songs. Pretty sure the bigher bqnds have plenty of money and personal recording studios that can invest some money into finishing the song. Moreover, a 20 second bit, unless it is some sort of intro, is not a song; don't list them as a bonus track.

    For sake of qrgument, I'll group hair and glam metal together. Not a big fan of either but some consideration has to be given to the time when it came out. It sprouted in the warly to mid 80s, and really besides Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and the NWOBHM there was nothing really that heavy around; to consider as well is that this is when labels strated to appear, heavy metal, glam, hair etc. When speed/thrash metal reared it's head, everything, pretty much, started to sound like Pat Boone (exaggerating somewhat) and all subsequent music got faster, heavier, darker to the point where this is the metal standard when people think of heavy metal. Agree with your premise although I think both terms (hair, glam) were a record label creation and haphazardly placed bands in that genre. To me a better term would have been pop metal, somewhat heavy songs with poppy tendencies. Hair/glam metal is now used as a pejorative description lile yacht rock or neo prog.

      @djacobmadrigal Yea, it's what the genre/style should've been called. Also, have to say that Pat Boone released an album called In a Metal Mood (or something similar) where he took metal songs and turned them into, sort of, big band/swing compositions; it's a riot. As a fan of swing and big bands as well, I appreciated his interpretations.

      I remember him doing some songs on TV; he came out in a gray leather outfit and a motorbike; It was entertaining for sure.

    It would be interesting to know the criteria used to come up with this ranking. Did they use album sales, concert ticket sales, Grammy nominations/wins, longevity, etc?

      Good question. For me it’s a matter of emotions and good songwriting, good lyrics, sound quality, vibe, dedication to the craft, artistic integrity.

    I misspoke: Still Loving You indeed has the lyrics where the relationship is over and the speaker is asking for a second chance.

    Straight up I don’t like the complete box set because of the small album images on the individual albums. Mainly Marino remasters from 1990 I guess. The individual albums came in 1994 again obviously Marino remasters. I’ve the 2007 Japanese mini LP box. Again based on Marino masters. I’ve 1990 Remasters on 4CD/ 6LP boxes and 1993 Box set 2. All late 80s on vinyl and Mothership, TSTTS, Complete BBC and HTWWW vinyl boxes too. I’m currently collecting the 1986 CD issues mainly Diament and I really like them. Warm and dynamic. I’m going to buy the Jimmy Page 2014 deluxe CDs and single vinyl albums next. Anyway, what I nearly forgot to mention was this, the music is great. Absolutely great except ITTOD which is a turkey in my mind.

    John Lawton is what I always imagined Tom Jones would sound like if he were with a rock band. Powerful, often mesmerizing, vocals particularly on soulful ballads. I had to stop your review and immediately listen to the bootleg Ten Miles High on You Tube. Thanks!

    Heep all the way. Innocent Victim is a great album. Perhaps more ballads than most which is why it is a favourite of mine.

    Lawton couldn't have done all those songs since Sloman wrote 2 of them.

      The voice doesn’t lie. Look it up on TH-cam under Uriah Heep Ten Miles High or look at it on Discogs website. I’ve had this downloaded for years. I know what I’m talking about. I can’t explain the songwriting credit but the music is there. Here’s the music on TH-cam. th-cam.com/video/nXTkGOwm62I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=B3TOBXK4RsDYsCjl

      In the liner notes of Conquest it says that Hensley wrote Feelings, Bolder wrote Fools, and Hensley wrote Been Hurt.

    At the time it came out, The Black Album blew me away. I knew a handful of songs from AJFA but wasn't a Metallica fan. The Black Album changed that for me. Musically, I get that it doesn't stand up if you are a fan of the earlier albums but this album takes me back to a specific time and place and will always have a place on my favorite album list.

    Solid list and will hqve to check out some of the bands you listed especially ones at rhe bottom of the list. I would heve imcluded the complete discography of Mercyful Fate and King Diamond, and called it a day. Iced Earth's Horror Show should be included as well.
