Figure skating exercises for coaches and students
Figure Skating Jumps: Learn Them in THIS Order!"
Not sure what the jumps are in figure skating or how they’re different?
👉 Download our FREE guide: "The 6 Jumps in Figure Skating" www.nextedgetutorials.com/figureskatingjumps for a full breakdown of all six jumps, their key differences, and what makes each one unique.
Learning to jump in figure skating isn’t just about trying every jump randomly-it’s about building a strong foundation so that each jump sets you up for the next. If you’ve ever felt stuck on a jump or frustrated that one just isn’t clicking, you’re not alone.
Skaters often struggle because they skip important steps or rush into harder jumps before they’re ready. In this lesson, we’ll break down how to progress through jumps in our favorite order, so you can develop better technique, consistency, and confidence. Watch as we go step by step through each jump, so you can avoid common mistakes and make real progress on the ice.
We’ll cover:
► The right jump order to help you progress faster.
► How strong basics make jumps feel easier and more controlled.
► Edge vs. toe jumps and how they affect your takeoff.
If you’ve been struggling with jumps or feeling stuck in your progression, this lesson will give you a clear direction so you can move forward with confidence. Let’s break it down step by step!
Happy Skating!

Great skater and amazing coaching skills. 👏👏👏 Thank you for a lesson. Now teach us how to do power pulls with loops🙂 art on ice.
So my order was walt sal flip toeloop lutz loop but my axel is still pending cause i did sal and realized i dont like edge jumps and i was good with my counter rotations but also i learnt my toeloop in combonation
Thank you for this fantastic breakdown. You are so generous with your time and talent, much appreciated! One great takeaway for me is that different skaters are more comfortable with certain jumps than others, regardless of complexity. Some just seem to resonate. Very excellent to think about.
love how throughout all your videos you keep reminding us that the learning curve is different for everyone and we shouldn't pay too much attention to it, just keep at it! It's quite easy to fall into these thoughts of "oh, why can't I get this already, it's easy, what's wrong with me?!" and then easily get discouraged keep it up guys, always a blast with your content! 👏
This has to be the clearest and best explanation of toe loop technique I have heard! I wish it had been explained to me that way when I first learned it... fixing a toe waltz jump to become a toe loop when it's already muscle memory is so hard 😮💨
4:58 3 turn loop jump
Thanks for youtube algorithm ❤😊
fantastic, especially the holding the outside edge after two pumps helped a lot! You really know what to emphazise on :D
Glad it was helpful!❤️❤️❤️
Oh, I’ve been needing this video. Thank you so much!
I am so glad you found it helpful! ❤️
Very clear explanation of all the jumps, thank you! ⛸️❤
You're so welcome!❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for making this video! I've been practicing these jumps except for the Lutz for almost 5 years. My LFO3 is still swingy, and my sal looks often like a waltz jump. My flip is still a half one, because I seem to have trouble jumping up and crossing my free leg around my skating leg. My toe loop needs to have the tapping foot go further back. Anyhow, I'll practice more, both on and off ice.
I had this swingy Sal problem for the longest time. Doing a Sal from back crosses was a game changer. The back crosses puts my weight in the right position and I can bring my free leg through nicely. I hope I can now fix the other entries (LFO3 and mohawk).
3:29 I'm so impressed you were doing it while moving your foot like that. :D
❤️❤️

This is really helpful. Thank you for your tips.
I am so glad you found it helpful! 💕

The best tips for absolute beginners of ice skating on TH-cam.❤❤❤
I am so glad you found them helpful!💕
Been stuck on my axel for a while now, I got to a point where I only needed the last quarter of a rotation to land a clean axel, then I lost it. I'm back to struggling with even crossing my feet and getting more than just 1 rotation. Idk what happened or what to do; I've been doing waltz jumps, waltz-backspin and waltz-loop as warmup every single time but it's just not coming back... I'm gonna go try this and hopefully feel a little bit calm about it lol, maybe it's a mental block cause I'm seeing my friends land axels left and right without even trying much. They haven't even been skating for a year yet, and they just "tried the axel for fun" and got it almost immediately, fully rotated and crossed feet. I've been skating for 1,5 years so I know it's completely normal not to have an (off ice) axel yet, but it's just discouraging lol. I'm struggling to even just jump that 1,5 rotation on two feet, still missing that last quarter rotation. Can't seem to get it no matter how hard I try to jump higher, rotate faster and whatnot. Currently blaming it on the fact that I'm an adult and quite tall😂 My friends landing axels are a few years younger and much smaller in size.
Thank you very much.
You are welcome!💕
Thank you! You broke it down so well I was able to understand not only the foot work but the arms. I was so confused when they introduced this step in class. So grateful for this video. Thank you again. 🙏🏻
You are very welcome! So glad it helped. ❤️❤️❤️
Such an amazing step by step. Thank you so much
You're so welcome!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you very much!! There are no such videos in my language. I was confused about the types of steps. You've helped me so much! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’m so glad it was helpful! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Nice presentation on how to do the backspin. With enough practice, the basic backspin will become a powerful backspin.
Yes, it's all about repetition and building confidence! ❤️❤️
Your tutorials are so helpful!
I’m so glad you find them useful! ❤️
Hello! I’m from Ukraine! I live in a front-line city, but we have a skating rink! It’s beautiful and big! Risking our lives, we go to the skating rink across bridges. I watch your videos without knowing your English, but I understand everything! You show the exercises better than anyone else! I can learn to skate better! I will live in a free country, we will win! Thank you for your clear lessons!
Thank you for sharing your story and for your bravery. We wish you all the best! ❤️❤️
Thanks 😊
You're welcome!💕💕
Did they get rid of the step behind on that step sequence?
No. It’s in the description posted before she started. She possibly overlooked that step? 4:56
Oh no, you’re absolutely right! We totally blanked on that step and both missed it. Definitely a mental lapse on our part. Thank you for catching it. We’ll be extra careful next time, but hopefully the rest of the breakdown was still helpful!
@@nextedgetutorials It’s a great video. Thank you for the breakdown. From a fellow coach I enjoy watching and learning from other coaches. You never know when someone has an insight or different perspective on teaching a skill that might work well for some of your students. Love the videos. Thank you for sharing! 💕
@nextedgetutorials yes it was helpful, I teach prefre and kinda hate the step sequence.
so good and so useful. 👍👍thank you❤️❤️❤️❤️
I am so glad you found it helpful ❤️❤️❤️
Mitch is so amazing 🤩
❤️❤️❤️
This is really great as a resource! Could you make an intermediate workout routine?
Sure thing! 👍❤️❤️
Can you make exercise videos for flexibility too???
Absolutely 👍
walking on a soft floor is easy but when i get on ice i fall imidietlly
Just take small steps when getting on the ice. It’s normal to want to take big pushes right away but small walking steps are best. You got this ❤️❤️
Thank you
Very welcome 😊❤️
❤❤❤Awesome!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes thank you! Clearly for myself I need to put as much work off ice as on the ice.
Very welcome and you got this ❤️❤️❤️❤️
ich erkenne das Prinzip einfach nicht. Es gibt soviele Optionen, welche ist die richtige wenn ich eine Ecke vorwärts oder rückwärts fahre ? Bin ziemlich verwirrt.
How about this: I've been playing hockey for nearly 30 years but am interested in figure skating - but I'm terrified of the toe pick! I think it would be a real challenge to switch to figure skates after so long.
My coach always asks me: "Why are your arms swinging wildly around?" (I just don't notice, only when I'm out of balance)
This is so normal and I completely understand because when I’m focusing on something like my feet, I tend to forget about my upper body. You got this ❤️❤️❤️
hi, would the stopping still be applicable to rentals? i noticed i go to the same ice rink as you lol. and the rentals arent that sharp. i just started 3 weeks ago and i cant go that much because i have no money for rentals
Yo helped me learn fast thanks 👍🏾
You're welcome 😊❤️
Thanks soo much its so fun now
That’s absolutely fabulous 💕💕
I went to a local rink with my daughter, and thought it would be a good opportunity for me to learn too. All I did was, watch this video just before going to the rink. I followed all the instructions in this video, nothing more, nothing less. Thanks for sharing such an easy-to-follow steps. After 2 sessions now, I started gliding. I just can't believe, I did it. Thank you so much Stacey, for making it so simple and so structured for a complete beginner. And now I am ready for your other video(Adult level 1-3)💖
That is amazing! I am so happy you found it helpful ❤️❤️❤️
Coach Stacey your facial expressions are priceless and always appreciate your smile 😊 this video makes it look so much easier even tho this is very difficult so thank you
Oh my goodness, I am so glad! ☺️💕💕💕
These are great details.... explains this move really well.....inside 3s are hard!!
❤️❤️❤️
Omg please don't do that, completely wrong!!!!!!
This was very helpful. Thank you.
You're welcome!❤️❤️
Hey, I would like to share something with you. Before I knew Jesus, I didn’t know who I am and what my purpose is. But He met me and I realised that I need Him. I was broken, depressed, angry with my parents, selfish and much worse. I often felt guilty but in todays society it’s easy to ignore the guilt and keep living like the rest of the world. But that’s not our purpose. You were created for much more, for a relationship with God. But we are far away from Him, because of our sins. We sin (that are things that keep us away from God) like lying, cheating, stealing. All the bad things. But God is perfect, holy. Sin separates us from God and though He loves us, we can’t be in heaven with him at the end. Because we are guilty. But God loves you so much, that He gave His only son Jesus, that whoever believes in him, shall not die but have everlasting life (John 3:16). Jesus lived the perfect life, which we couldn’t live 2000 years ago. He never lied, was never selfish and never hated anyone. Then He died on the cross and rose again 3 days later. He paid the price for our sins with his blood on the cross. Just so we can be forgiven and have a relationship with God again. Everyone who accepts Him as his Lord and Saviour will be saved. He gives you true peace and love. Because He is love (1.John 4:8)

Is there a way of stopping that doesn't involve falling over?
Yes 👍 ❤️❤️
Great tutorial - many thanks 😊😊😊 I´m gonna try this today. Can´t wait to be on the ice 🤩
You’re welcome 😊❤️❤️❤️
