Fluval FX6 - 5 months without maintenance
What's inside a Fluval FX6 running on a fully planted tank with 9 Discus and 50 tetras, when it hasn't been cleaned in 5 months?

Planted Discus Tank - 9 Months
มุมมอง 1.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's how the tank and the Discus are doing after 9 months running. The Discus were about 2 inches / 12 weeks old when I bought them. My next video will be about things I have changed about maintenance or other routines over the course of maintaining the tank. My next project is to build a betta habitat for my half moon black orchid named Cuda, currently living in a very well maintained (don't...

Why and How I Prepare RO/DI in the Shower

I was thinking about the temperature limitations of RO/DI units, specifically the RO membrane, as well as keeping the clean water temperature warm to match the Discus tank (84 F) during the upcoming winter cold season. Adding More Discus to the Tank - 4 Blue Diamonds
มุมมอง 3.1K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The 5 Cobalt discus are doing fine, but it's time to add more, 9 discus should be a good number for this tank as they grow. I am hoping this helps spread out and diffuse the aggression as well as make the tank look a little more "complete". I think 9 looks good. I have some footage at the end just showing the tank at night. It is noteworthy that the discus seem to know it is night even though I...

Fluval FX6 Makes Water Changes EASY (and a 24th day tank update)

Here's how (in case you haven't seen) a Fluval FX6 can make a water change quick and easy. Also, 24 days into the new setup, I have the tap/RO ratio figured out for keeping the tank water around 3 degrees of hardness which is ideal for the discus, tetras, and plants. Acrylic tanks are excellent but you have to take care when cleaning not to scratch them. If you do scratch them and have a spare holding tank, you can put the fish into that tank, empty the acrylic tank and wet sand and polish any scratch out. That’s something you can’t do with glass tanks. They both have their pros and cons but I like the clarity of the acrylic tank with no corners and also they don’t crack like a glass tank will.

    Use a Eihem Prefilter in the Fluval FX6 inlet. The prefilter has two sections filled with 30 PPI Coarse sponge. You can replace one of it's section by filter floss material to filter fine debris entering the FX6. Less debris..Coarse or Fine..Less maintenance for the FX6 for longer duration.

    🙂 You are using the F6 for water changes...amazing...and i thought the F6 is used for the ultimate filtration purpose. Suppose you are feeding BHM to your discus and you are draining all the heart mix particle water through your FX6 filter..those heart mix particles in the water will surely lodge into the nicks and corners..inside the canister filter creating a bacterial growth inside the filter. Will the biomedia will be able to handle the parameters?. Beside this this is a very innovative method of water change through a canister filter model which most of the filters will be unable to perform.

    Questions that should have been addressed in this video: Where to get driftwood? Is this store purchased or found on the beach? Salt water driftwood or fresh water? Does salt water driftwood negatively affect the orchid or not? How do you water the orchid after mounting it? Spray it in place or take it off and soak it? How often? Does the moisture affect the wall behind the mount?

    David, I enjoyed your video but I got tell you, I have several FX6’s and because I hate cleaning them probably more than most, I usually let them go 6 months or more between cleanings. I also am heavily into discus, angels, chiclids, and severums that I breed and raise. In my opinion, I think you need to go a lot deeper in cleaning your FX6 filter media. I go about things the same way you do, but I squeeze out each sponge repeatedly until they release essentially clear water. I usually wash them in tap water but then finish them in tank water. All the garbage about only using tank water is overblown and my fish are fine as long as I don’t fill the filter with tap water. There is plenty of beneficial bacteria in an established aquarium and as long as you use chlorine remover for water and filter changes, you’ll be good to go. So, wash filter media out more thoroughly and you won’t have to do it nearly as often. Cheers!

    Hey, I just came across your video, I'm looking to get a ph controller and looking at this one. I do heavy planted tanks. Have c02 on timer, but I'm developing bba, and from what I've read, it is caused by fluctuations in c02. My question is, does leaving this set to 6.5 leave the drop checker in the light green stage all the time? Also are you happy with this ph meter still? Thanks

    • @hugheymorrow
      @hugheymorrow ปีที่แล้ว

      I am still happy been using this for many years. Bba is easily controlled with water changes in my experience. I turn off the Co2 controller at night about an hour before lights off so it isn't running all the time. During that time pH fluctuates to about 7.4 until morning when co2 kicks on with lights.

    • @curtisburke3080
      @curtisburke3080 ปีที่แล้ว

      @David Hughey oh really, ok. I figured you would keep it running all the time. Thanks for the info! So, bba is related to bad water quality?? I find it only appears in my tank in the direct flow from the filter and wavemaker. So, do you do weekly water charges? Tank is heavy planted, and water tests are good with very little nitrates. Guess i normally go 2 weeks or so between water changes, tho. Thanks for the info
