    I've carried my sony mirrorless camera on a peak design quick release clip on my shoulder bag - that lets it take fewer vibrations, since my body acts as a shock absorber, and gives incredibly quick access. When it starts to rain, I can transfer it into the shoulder bag, which protects it well. I used a gopro 8, the sony mirrorless, a lightweight drone, and my cell phone to do a decent job of documenting my ride across Ohio - though it ended up being the gopro I had troubles with! My next major trip will see the addition of a 360 camera - possibly replacing the gopro, possibly supplementing it.

    Hello, your handlebars are very nice. I also have double handlebars but from another era. Also, I hate these profiled plastic grips because they get sticky and the plastic rots in the sun. Luckily, I've found some moulded wooden grips on the handlebars, and I've fitted a super-light photo bag (I boycott all these cases and bags dedicated to bikes, which are all too heavy and poorly designed). This way, I can put my Fujifilm xs-10 + other things in quick access and close/cover it if it's raining. Note that I have front suspension and a big tyre, so less vibration/shock. Finally, I've always positioned my sensor facing the ground to reduce dust and also to avoid the mechanical stabiliser always being under pressure on one side. Otherwise, I also use this handlebar for a wonderful boat navigation compass:).

    I started biking this past summer for the first time in many many years. I ride paved and graveled roads and trails, some that can get pretty rough. I didn't have any bike bags but wanted to take a camera with me to shoot any interesting sights and wildlife I might come across. I have a small well padded camera bag that I took the shoulder strap off of. It has velcro straps arranged on in such a way that, along with some zip ties, I can securely attach it to my handlebars, on the inboard side, so the bag lays right in front of me. It's not a dedicated bike bag and I don't think they had this in mind when they made the bag, but it works for me. It's just the right size to hold my Canon SX50HS or my Nikon B700. (I didn't want to carry an expensive camera around with me, and they work good enough.) If I see something I can stop and quickly bring the camera out of the bag for a shot. Caught some decent wildlife shots this way.

    Another vote for not having the camera on the bike as I would be afraid of damage. I use a very small setup (Sony a7CR) and a sling that I can just stop, sling to the front, and grab the camera out. Great shots, by the way.

    I worry too much about my kit getting jossled too much so I've been using a sling bag (Moment 10L) to carry my kit, as most of them will have a stability strap to keep the bag on your back. EVOC has a 7L hip bag that's more biking oriented I haven't tried yet, but heard good things about.

    I keep mine in the handlebar bag on something soft to atenuate the shocks, easy to open with magnets in one sec. I don't feel so good knowing the sensor is moving around all the time but it will be totally fine, that ribbon cable will not wear out very soon

    Interesting stuff man. Never liked taking a camera on eg gravel because of the vibrations... But, have been thinking a small compact like a Rx100 of GR would fit in a frame bag (that said, they'd easily fit in a Camelback). My reasoning here is that a bag slung under (same with under bar bags) a tube has less vibration transfer. A MFT camera is also super compact, as are their lenses - perhaps the ultimate lightweight/compact setup for the cyclist? OMS cameras are typically properly weather sealed too.

    Thank you for sharing! I recommend checking out the Sony rx100M7, which is the smallest pocket camera with 24-200mm zoom, advanced AF , 4K recording and mic input. I use their leather case with a tiny leather strap. I always carry the camera as it is super light and you won't feel it. I add a waist strap so it stays on my back area while riding. To take a shot you just stop, grab it - take a shot - put the cover back on and back to riding. Always ready and a fraction of your current setup. You just might need few extra batteries :)

    My current touring setup is an Ortlieb handlebar bag like you have, but with the "Ultimate Camera-Insert" from Ortlieb, and small carbon travel tripod strapped under the handlebars (so it sits between the bag and head tube). I found this solution to provide the easiest access. In fact the access is so good that I was able to open the bag, reach for the camera and take photos while riding. But I'm still searching for a solution for my new gravel bike.

    @kai_jokela 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I would never put a camera on a bike bag anymore. 20 years ago I carried all mechanical film camera in Ortlieb handlebar bag (with camera cushion insert), and my camera shutter got partially broken. To be exact, the shutter curtain slow-down-braking bumber stopped working which resulted camera shake when first curtain bangs against other side of shutter. This ruined ruined about 25 rolls of film during my Vietnam trip! I noticed how many around-the-world bike travellers prefer to carry Macbook pro laptops with SSD-drives in their pannier bags, but surpricingly many of them had their Macbooks get broken. IMHO all your fragile gear needs to be so lightweight that you can carry them around your body in backpacks, hips bags, belt bags etc.

      Yes. Watching this vid, I feel like the Canon M bodies without viewfinders are probably near perfect if you want to go APSC as opposed to micro 4/3. I've got a very small Fuji XE1 and that's still just too big to pocket really. That Cannon M with a pancake lens or a collapable zoom seems like the way to go. You can make a pocket or a belt pouch available. I've recently been carrying an old Canon S95 compact which is tiny. But really, apart from the zoom lens with a longer telephoto end, the quality is probably not as good as a phone.

    "So as not to damage the top tube", clearly got your priorities straight. I have a few cameras I bring on rides. If I bring an SLR, I usually put it on a shoulder strap for easy access. I've got an action cam, that I put in a 3d printed clip attached to the front of a front basket, but I set that to loop record in case a car driver tries to run me over, cuz I don't really do video. i've been thinking about trying one of these triple strap setups. my main objections is having any extra stuff on my body when its hot out. plus the current setup (R7 w/ 18-150mm) is kinda bulky. maybe i'll try the strap with the M6 before finally selling it. thanks for the comment.

    Thanks for the video. Canon r7 has a bit better autofocus then m6, but when traveling I hardly imagine where it can to be needed. R crop cameras don’t have small 22mm equivalent.

    • @biking-places
      @biking-places 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      you're right, the autofocus is definitely not reason enough to upgrade. the better battery life is probably more consequential though the M6 batteries are tiny so its easy to pack extra. i might even say part of the purchase was driven by a mild case of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome). i can get a pretty flat setup with the RF 28mm lens or go wider with the 16mm or the 24mm which are both much less flat. you're right, though, i can't really match the 22mm with its tiny form factor... at least not with canon.

    Downtube shifters still have their place, especially pure friction, non-indexed shifters -- they belong on vintage steel bikes. I don't ride mine on group rides because you never know the skill and experience level of all the people with whom you're riding, and in that environment I cover the brakes. But on a leisurely solo ride they are wonderful.

    I have a 2009 Raleigh Clubman on the way for exactly this kind of project. The frame was built around 700Cx25mm, but allegedly there's enough room to fit a 700Cx32mm. I'm hoping I can fit at least some 650Bx38mm. Plan to use it for "all road" touring, perhaps with some rather slow singletrack jaunts. It has been a long time since I've ridden a drop bar bike on anything other than a road.

    In the old days we avoided pedal strike by not pedaling through corners. Since we weren't racing it seemed to do the job. I bought a Huffy Parkside comfort bike from a thrift store and can't corner aggressively while pedaling for just that reason. Made worse by replacing the cheapo 27.5x1.75 tires with Schwalbe Road Cruiser 1.4" tires (37-584). They soak up a lot of road chatter and use standard 26x1-3/8 tubes which I can pick up anywhere, including off the shelf at Walmart.

    • @biking-places
      @biking-places 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      i honestly haven't really ever had pedal strike issues, even with lower bb bikes and longer cranks. maybe i instinctively stop pedaling in the turns or just don't lean that much. the only time its an issue is near curbs or large rocks/roots. good tip on those old school cruiser 26er tubes fitting 650s, i hadn't thought of that and they are often easy to find.

    • @JustClaude13
      @JustClaude13 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @biking-places I don't know that cruiser tubes would fit, except in wider tires, but the tubes from the old three speeds fit the narrow tires. Mostly dragging the pedals isn't a problem for me because I've gotten slower over time.

      hi, thanks for watching, glad you found it helpful. i've done a number of trips to the yucatan before and after this one. all of them were in the winter (dec - mar) which is the dry season. this particular trip was in late dec. there are some mosquitos but i would not say its ever been much of a problem since its pretty dry and there isn't much standing water. some areas may have a few more than others but i've never been swarmed like i was near a river in loiza, puerto rico. happy to answer any other questions you might have.

    Unless you have issues with goat heads, no not worth it, works out to be about 2 or 3 oz per tire in weight savings. Pressure is all the same, burp vs pinch flat, all the same, messing up your wheels either way

    • @biking-places
      @biking-places 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      some good thoughts here, thanks. i did have some goat head issues in greece (mentioned it briefly in that video). the touring tires with their kevlar or whatever did fine actually but the gravel tires couldn't go an hr without a flat until we replaced the tubes with sealant. not much of an issue for most of the places i ride. interestingly i haven't had issues with burping significant amount of air yet. i know some friends have but hasn't happened to me. i don't really think of tubeless as much of a weight saving measure, i like to use a lot of sealant so i don't have to think about it for a long time.

      @biking-places 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      it's really about how the lock is built. if you see or feel a slight movement when you reach a certain number then it'll work but some locks are built a little more precisely so this movement won't be noticeable and it won't work regardless of how many numbers.

    To me they’re well worth it. Switched to tubeless with 40mm gravel tires on 21mm internal width rims (both tubeless ready) and it was great. Have since used different 40mm gravel tires on the same wheels and now 35mm road tires on 25mm internal width rims and it’s all been great. Setup has been a breeze for me with just a floor pump. From what I see, I seem to fall on the luckier side of things as far as compatibility goes. Combinations I’ve had success with: - Bontrager Paradigm SL TLR wheels + Bontrager GR-1 Team Issue 40mm tires + Bontrager TLR sealant - Bontrager Paradigm SL TLR wheels + Schwalbe G-One RS 40mm tires + Silca Ultimate Tubeless Sealant - Bontrager Paradigm Comp 25 TLR wheels + Continental Grand Prix 5000 AllSeason TR 35mm tires + Silca Ultimate Tubeless Sealant It may be worth noting that I’ve had Bontrager TLR Rim Strips installed in both wheel sets and didn’t need tubeless tape as a result. And the Bontrager sealant wasn’t particularly impressive, while the Silca stuff has done its job quite well. I’m a heavy rider so the lower pressures I can run tubeless have made the ride more comfortable than I ever thought possible. The setup fuss isn’t ideal, but it’s been minimal for me and the benefits have been fantastic.

    • @biking-places
      @biking-places 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      thanks for the details. i totally agree, there's some effort and occasional aggravation but it's worth it for tires in those sizes. for what its worth i think the technology is getting better and some of the old growing pains are likely to go away. i use stan's sealant and it's worked great for me by and large so far.

      yeah, i noticed in the MTB world they are widely used and much less controversial. i haven't done a full on international touring trip using tubeless yet but i'm leaning towards giving that a try soon. i just need a more touring focused tubeless wheelset, the low spoke count ultegra wheels are not quite heavy duty enough in my opinion.
