Make slow cars fast with electrons
Putting a Tesla Motor In My VW bus
After installing the tesla model 3 battery in the truck in the last video, it is now time to install the motor. In this video, I breakdown the design process and computer modeling of the motor mounts, weld them together, and then finally install the Tesla motor! Turned out to be fairly straight forward... for once!

Putting a Tesla Battery In My VW Bus
มุมมอง 9K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
After I opened up the Tesla Model 3 battery pack, I decided to change my plan and to shorten the entire pack! This meant removing EVERYTHING from the battery pack and then cutting it shorter. By the end of this video, I get the complete battery pack installed into the 1985 Volkswagen Doka (the double cabin truck version of a VW Vanagon).

This is a video made over the course of 3 years. From 2021 to 2023. I buy and "restore" a vintage microcar, the BMW isetta. From first looks to first drives, this video shows everything. Do I actually end up buying another isetta in the process? Guess you'll have to watch to find out!
Put New Seats In ANY Classic Car - 1985 Vanagon Syncro Doka
มุมมอง 3.4K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video, my dream truck, a 1985 4WD VW Vanagon Truck, gets a new interior. Brand new seats and door cards all for under $70! Not too shabby. Some CNC work and welding work done. More CNC work needed in the future! Gotta make the truck pretty before we start and the mechanical side of this restoration!

Good content, stop talking so much throughout the process.. Explain before and just get what you explained done...
Interested in the CAD files, do you have a copy online?
Thanks for the video. Do you have the battery dimensions for those smaller packs you wouldn’t mind sharing.
A bit late, but wouldn't it have been a lot easier to reassemble the battery inside the car ? Or are the bolts that hold the cover on on the bottom ?
Death to useless clickbait arrows in thumbnails.
This is awsome! I was considering getting an Ape and converting it to a food truck. I would trailer it to the events, so I only need enough range to get it on/off the trailer and move it to the on-site location. It would be great if the battery could be used to run the fridges. BTw, how tall are you? I'm trying to Guage how tall the Ape is.
We need a whole video on how you did it dude. Id like to convert my mini bike to electric but having a tough time finding the right videos to follow. Great vid btw.
Hi, cool ride. I do have one question maybe a concern for your safety. When I watched you install the bolts, you put them in from the back with the nut one the front side. I work on old Fords and a few of my teachers always had me put the bolt in from the front with the nut on the back. They said if the nut loosened off, the bolt would at least stay in. The way you have it, the bolt could slide out. Ok maybe an old grump guys wive’s tale but I just to it that way so they don’t yell at me from their graves. I am glad I found your channel. I like it
Yuck
_HOLY CRAP DUDE!_ ~That has got to be some of the ugliest "welding" this side of the Third World. Prep & settings are your friend. Practice with the type of metal you are going to be using each time you set up for a new project. Practice practice practice.
Looking forward to see the drive shaft that you use from the motor to the tires! Are you making these yourselve?
Awesome project. 2.5 miles per kilowatt hour (not kilowatt) probably isn’t too far off in the summer. Winter will likely be worse due to cabin heat, unless you’re going to do a diesel heater or something. Standard range packs have about 20% degradation at this point, so probably around 45 kWh usable.
In some regions, the bolt on mounts are basically a requirement, because veld on mounts can be considered altering the structure, making it more difficult to make it road legal after conversion.
Good luck with it. Please keep it as original as possible to retain its value. Have fun with the paint scheme and the upholstery but keep the rest standard. You will end up with a very valuable vehicle. Look forward to any future videos about this Isetta.
Where would you keep the batteries? Why not a hybrid?
Well clearly not the worlds first. Electric classic cars in Wales UK have been converting VW busses, vans and pickups for the last 10yrs.
That is really sick 😮. Looking forward to seeing the project progressing. Good luck from Germany 👍🏻.
Why?
Subscribed! Did you measure up the frame rails manually or did you scan it in?
Should have installed the engine on the front wheels an you could have retaining the rear engine to get synchro drive vanagon, good job on the build.
It's almost a shame to put that much work into the VW and not cherrying out the body!
awesome)
This is amazing, I just discovered this and am so amazed it doesnt have way more views!
Honestly didn't think the battery would slip in. Bravo on the ingenuity.
Take the spring washers off, throw them into the scrap bin, and get some nylock nuts instead. Then get 12.8 or 8.8 grade bolts as well, and use the spec from the manufacturer for them with nylock bolts, along with a generous amount of anti seize compound in the inner section where it meets the mounts. As well with the mounts, use some anti corrosion spray on all the mating areas, easiest is linseed oil, applied with a spray gun, and left to drip off and polymerise for a week. Works as well in all the body panels as well, and wherever you have chassis rails. Messy, but keeps it from corroding really well.
Looks great but it is definitely not the first 😂
Hi , we watched your video carefully, it's really very detailed and fascinating, would you be interested in reviewing the car stereo?
I may be seeing things but that filter on the motor looks mangled up on the edge
What 3D fill you used to design this in your computer
The mustache bar is a brilliant idea and very well designed. You can bolt a skid plate later to cover and protect the motor.
I hope you realize that there isn't a frame where everything sits on. It's a monocoque. By removing all that metal, especially the stuf on top of the treasure boxes, you're eating away its structural integrity.
Have you never been under a vanagon? th-cam.com/video/LNM00RN0lkQ/w-d-xo.html&si=TWiDH4RPR4rRL4pc
Terrible sounding welding…..Not good ! When it sounds good and in sync the welding will be good
You are living my dream!
AWESOME! I absolutely love the T3 DoKa trucks since I first saw them in the early 90s. I am really looking forward to seeing the progress on this project. I kick myself everyday for not buying it when I had a chance to get an actual TriStar.
Should've tdi swapped it
get you some anti splatter or spray cooking oil to stop the bbs flux core gas less user here :)
Sorry, you're not the first one to put a Tesla engine in a T3. There is a french couple that convertet a 16" Syncro Camper.
Hi nice Project! Did you not weld any reinforcement into the vehicle frame? Is it just the sheet metal? Regards frome Germany, Stephan
Where is the longer Video? hahah, Also a parts list would be great!
Very impressed, but would suggest a bit more safety you never know when one buckle or webbingstrap breaks.
Dude! Seriously? The Tesla batteries are very dangerous! They catch on fire all the time! To have one in the cab with you is just asking to get burned to death. It would be much safer to mount under the van, as others have done. That way, you still have some space between you and the fire and time to bail out. Also, the fumes from these batts are toxic--another reason to not have them in the cab. Even if it doesn't catch on fire by itself, in an accident, it frequently does. Where is your crash protection? Have you not heard of the recent crash of a Tesla truck on I-80, owned by Tesla, that caught fire when the batt was damaged and burned for hours, requiring 100k gallons of water to put out. Search Utube for Tesla and electric car batt fires--you will find many! Also, these batteries, when they burn, release toxic fumes that can be permanently disabling or fatal! You impress me as a really smart guy, but this is beyond stupid. Some shops do this conversion all the time, but no reputable shop would put the batt in the cab. Could you give one of them a call if you don't believe me? I know this is harsh, but seriously, could you reconsider?
Way to go! I have an ‘86 Syncro Doka with kind of a lemonish i4 conversion, Eurospec. I’ve been kicking around electrifying it for a while. This is super inspiring.
Slick! Very nice! Does this pack have LFP prismatic, or NMC cylindrical cells?
I feel like they are NMC because they take so little space.
what's up with the ominous sounds :P :D
Very cool project and the way the motor is mounted seems very good. Here's a similar project involving a VW truck but with a different motor(s). So this may be the first VW truck using a Tesla motor, but not the first VW truck. Looks like they are in the San Diego area too. th-cam.com/video/omOUc75r39g/w-d-xo.html
EVTV made an electric Doka in 2017
I'm doing a conversion of a late bay bus on my channel, so I am interested in this very much! Clean install on the motor mounts. I am interested to see how you do the axles.
Brilliant job!
Are you putting the rear seats back in?
cool!! Very nice!
