    Valve always said that Windows would not be supported on the Steam Deck. They did say they would release drivers for Windows at least for the LCD Deck, but also that you shouldn't mistake that for support. I never saw a timetable for when drivers would be released. When they talked about when dual boot would be released, they said it would be available when Steam OS became available for general use on any hardware. That hasn't happened yet. They again did not give a timetable. They didn't make the promises that you imply. There has been nothing about these things that has surprised me in the least. I didn't buy a Steam Deck to use Windows on it, because I heard it when Valve said that Windows was not supported and never would be. If I wanted to run Windows on a handheld I would have bought a Windows handheld. Of course, I am capable of running Windows on the Steam Deck if I wanted, but full support was never promised. Also, the Steam Deck is open. That just means that there is no locked bootloader, and you can experiment with whatever software you like. That's not a promise that they will support anything other than their own OS. If you want real support for Windows, BSD, Android, MacOS, etc., then you have to provide it yourself.

    You ran all your tests on a 13900K. That CPU has P and E cores, something Windows 10 LTSC doesn't handle well because the core scheduler was only added later in 21H2. You should've run your tests on an AMD or an older Intel processor for a fair comparison.

    You are complaining for something the did deliver. You can install windows just not dual boot yet. So go cry me a river. Its still a open platform. And btw they stated that there is no support for windows from them since the beginning. "We are providing these resources as is and are unfortunately unable to offer 'Windows on Deck' support. If you get stuck and need a way back to the default Steam Deck OS, please follow these recovery instructions." Have a nice day. XD

    I bought my Steam Deck LCD for what it was. Not what was promised. Trusting a promise from a company, any company, is pretty foolhardy. I was so impressed with my Steam Deck that I bought the LE OLED the moment orders were available. My son and I are having a blast playing coop games together and there hasn't been any complaints from him. The only reason I'd want Windows is to use Lossless Scaling which would smooth out a couple games in my library. If SteamOS had Lossless Scaling built in or a similar function, I'd never want to leave.

    So much missinformation. You can't find proof of that "promise" because it doesn't exist. Also, *open* hardware is not the same as _support for Windows 11_ It means you can modify/install/use whatever you like, because it is *not closed* down. And the fact, that they did deliver your Win11 drivers invalidates your whole video. 🤡

    Man. Valve dares to release their gaming device with an open bootloader, while every other device manufacturer locks that shit down like it's a fucking gorilla enclosure, and somehow it's not enough. They ALSO have to support a different OS with software and drivers. Lol, lmao even. What you call "promises" is just assumptions you made up in your head. They literally wrote that the bluetooth and audio drivers are not ready for windows, and will be provided as-is without any real support.

    My take on this topic is that when SD was first released Valve thought it's gonna be the only handheld and that's why they promised windows support (which they do deliver anyway) but later because of the flood of windows handhelds they realized that if someone wanted windows they are not gonna but SD anyway so the support might wait longer and they can focus on what really matters for the community. Yeah, sure, it aucks if you bought SD solely for windows but the amount of ppl like you is very small. I understand the thing about not keeping promises by valve but when the company can choose between update to the sOS that will make some new popular game running better and working on the dual boot installer for windows I'm perfectly happy with them choosing something that will make a lot more users happy. Especially if the community solution do exist and can be used instead. I understand you may not like it, but I'm completly happy that they prioritize what community wants

    You’re right about them missing the boat on being on time with drivers, but I think you’re actually underestimating steam os and Linux. It’s arguably easier to open the App Store, install heroic, and have gog epic and ea right there. Emulation is entirely on par if not better. Steam is uses Wayland and Gamescope to control fps, screen tearing, and handle scaling conveniently. You can save A SIGNIFICANT amount of battery using the available tools to scale performance. Running windows applications, almost any, is pretty easy to do if you need to. To leave it in the dock for months JUST because of windows seems a lil petty dude.

Steam Deck is designed for SteamOS, they promised open platform but never they promised that they support these platforms

  • @bardiir
    @bardiir 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Did they ever promise full driver support? No they didn’t They just promised you can install windows, even having the dual boot thingy is not a promise for full support of an unsupported system, they support SteamOS, everything else is on your part to make sure it’s functional in the way you want or make it yourself by for example porting over the drivers from steamos/linux - this video just feels dishonest, you misunderstood what they promised (and delivered) and then spun an anti valve story around your own head canon of what you understood and they didn’t deliver.

    Very poor timing for this video :) - the drivers (complete and working) are out the very same day this video is. But let’s be real for a moment here : the word « Windows » doesn’t even appear on the Steam Deck page ! You bought something for a future feature that was casually mentioned (not on the product page) with no date or timeframe, and complains when it’s available only 10 months later ? I can understand that someone can be frustrated by things taking too long but sometimes software development can take more time than expected, things need to be prioritized.

    Steam Deck was made to ensure Valve are not dependent on Microsoft for their continued success. Windows is not, and was never, their supported OS. Linux is. Just be happy they are doing anything at all for Windows. The intended use case is SteamOS, anything else is an advanced use case "at your own risk." You have the option to install Windows, they are not required to do the work for you, or do it in a timely manner. You buy Steam Deck for Steam OS, any other reason is your own mistake. (Coming from someone who has not yet bought a Steam Deck)

    I got the SteamDeck because of my frustration of Windows. Bloatware, apps running in the background, and annoying pushes for me to use/buy more Microsoft products. The only thing that stopped me from switching to Linux was the lack of game support, but then they released proton and it was kinda iffy if it would run your games. With the SteamDeck Proton has been getting more updates and all of my games run flawlessly! Duel booting would be nice if you REALLY wanted to play a game with Anti-Cheat that doesn't support Linux, but I rather not deal with the hell that is setting up a fresh Windows install and uninstalling bloat apps and disabling a million things in Privacy settings just to play Fortnite.

    I mean too be fair windows runs on the steam deck. So the steam deck does support windows. However that's as far as the support goes. I literally bought the steam deck so I wouldn't have to deal with windows anymore. So I feel this is not an issue for most people. I have been able to get all windows apps that I use to run through Linux as well. The thing im mad about is steam os doesn't have support for other systems officially like they said. Because If I get an rog ally or legion I want officially supported steam os. I guess chimera is a decent alternative.

    Valve never said a release date. They have always said that SteamOS isn't out untill it's available on general hardware. Also VLAVE HAS NEVER PROMISED ANYTHING ABOUT DRIVERS OTHER THAN IT BEING POSSIBLE. IT'S OPEN SOURCE. OPEN SOURCE HARDWARE IS EXTREMELY HARD TO SUPPORT ON A CLOSED SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM. THE FACT THAT ANYTHING WORKS AT ALL WITHOUT COMMUNITY DRIVERS IS INSANE TO ME. DUAL BOOTING WILL NOT BE A THING UNTIL THE OPERATING SYSTEM RELEASES PUBLICLY. Also the hoops you have to jump through is downloading heroic launcher. The hoops you have to jump through to get Steam on Windows is downloading Steam. Windows has a default storefront so does Steam OS. There are no major hoops. The only time it there are is when you're not using the steam deck like a computer. Which you will be doing on Windows anyways.

    • @adina-the-nerd
      @adina-the-nerd 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Also open hardware just means that you can do what you want with it. Does not mean you don't have to do a lot of work to get to that point. Windows works on the Steam deck but Valve never promised drivers. They incentivize people to make community drivers actively. They did not advertise windows as a feature they advertised other operating systems like other Linux operating systems or Android I guess. Valve is an extremely small company and they have been communicating very well with the steam deck. They have not broken any promises as the only promise they've made when it comes to windows is that dual-booting will be easier. Which isn't even an exclusive Windows promise. Also that will be a thing when the operating system actually releases. Which again it isn't because you expected valve to go by an arbitrary standard that they specifically didn't set an explicitly didn't set

    So, take this with a grain of salt if you wish. I think this video is... misleading. To start off with, this is going to be a bit... longer of a comment as I'm trying to be constructive and not just try to make witty "ragebait" comments. Before continuing, I do want to say that yes, it is a good idea to be upset about broken promises from corporations. Valve is not our friend and no one should be defending them. This appears to be made on the premise of broken promises, but you even state yourself when covering the first LCD drivers that you can not find any confirmation with a timestamp you are comfortable basing this on. I'm sorry, but how is this a promise? The only thing I can locate from Valve was their original statement when the drivers were released stating "We are providing these resources as is and are unfortunately unable to offer 'Windows on Deck' support." Regarding Valve's statements on "SteamOS 3", this I agree on. This is confusing terminology. From my understanding, the confusion here comes from "SteamOS 3 for the Steam Deck" (Tehcnically "SteamOS Holo") and "SteamOS 3", a general purpose OS. The general purpose OS has been promised since before the Steamdeck was announced and I think should be what Valve should be pressured on. There is a lot more to talk on regarding what is going on with dual boot (Secure Boot keys via GRUB2, the bootloader most Linux distros use) and drivers (signature approval via Microsoft), both of which require Microsoft's approvals. Valve does claim this is an open platform, but to the best of my knowledge the only promise I have seen regarding Windows has been future dual boot support. Frankly, I a lot of the blame on the delay here does come down to Microsoft. They are historically archaic to work with regarding any kind of signature or code signing unless you are a major vendor (Intel, AMD, Nvidia, ARM, etc) and you are targeting off the shelf/OEM products. All in all, I think this is ultimately misleading on the premise of a broken promise, and I think it would be more constructive to push Valve into finishing SteamOS 3 (For general purpose use), since that will likely fulfill the only documented outstanding promise Valve made regarding Windows.

    Also, stating it allows the installation of an alternative OS does not mean that Valve condones, supports, or warranties the use of such OS. Motorola says they allow for the installation of alternative operating systems such as Graphene. That means they'll provide or sell you an unlock code for your phone's bootloader which allows you to install, say GrapheneOS. Motorola does not provide any support for GrapheneOS. They do not publish updates for it GrapheneOS to make it compatible with your Motorola phone. If the device fails due to an operating system issue, they are not responsible for replacing it, even if it's under warranty. (Reference: Magnuson Moss Warranty Act Extended to electronics.) The statement is simply that Valve won't stop you from doing what you like with your hardware, much like Motorola. This is in contrast with Samsung, ASUS, etc. who make it impossible (or very *very* difficult) to unlock your bootloader to install an alternate OS. "The amount of time it took really should have been communicated before buying it." Do you expect Valve to have some kind of crystal ball? Do you think they just like... released the LCD driver then giggled to themselves for months about how funny it was to not release the rest of the drivers? Do you have *any* idea how much time it takes to write, test, optimize, and get signoff from Microsoft for Windows drivers? Apparently not.

  • @tim3172
    @tim3172 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Shipping alongside Steam OS 3 means it will come bundled with an Steam OS 3 update rather than a standalone app, update, or utility. Verbiage for it releasing with OS 3 would be "Included when Steam OS 3 arrives later this year", "Arriving with Steam OS 3.0", etc. Microsoft routinely ships updates to Office alongside Windows updates, meaning you download an update to Windows and it has a fix for an Office problem specific to a flaw in Windows. This is opposed to a standalone Office update. In this case, *obviously* the software shipping alongside Windows 11 isn't coming with Windows 11, which is several years old. This is part of the ITIL definition of software releases.

Plans and Promises are different things, it was clear from the get-go this is a Linux centric handheld, and even then, these are just plans to streamline the accessibility, you can already dual boot windows on it, you just need to partition the drives, and select which OS you want to boot into. There is a reason why Valve is more focused on SteamOS, as they have been moving farther and farther away from Windows for years, long before the Steamdeck, they were doing the same thing with the steam machine. If you wanted to a handheld that just ran Windows, you should have bought one of the countless competitors (which I recall you did) instead of being upset over a promise that never existed. In my opinion, windows is a treatment to a symptom rather than the disease, the disease being kernel level anti-cheats that make some games incompatible with Linux that cause people to install windows (much at the expense of usability, for more reasons than one)
