The essence of the story is correct and the experience was a formative one for the young republic. There are a few anachronisms but the story stands on its own as well it should.

As you see, Germany has an incredible amount of castles. The numbers are always hard to count and compare between countries. Depending what you count in as a "castle", the numbers are between 18,000 and 25,000, so if you say "a solid 20,000", this is probably a decent number to say. Germany, as it is today, like one big country in unity, was founded in the 19th century, so it is quite young, there were times when Germany was divided into more than 300(!) different political entities, often with different tax systems and currencies. Also, it has a lot of regional cultures that are quite different from each other. The landscapes differ from coastal regions and islands with beaches in the north down to the alps in the south, and inbetween there is a lot of diversity. Our country has very old roots, yet it is quite modern and a lot of it had to be rebuilt after WWII. Therefore there is a lot of mixture between old and very modern architecture, often directly next to each other. If I go down the street to buy some aspirin, the modern drug store with online store is inside a building that is 800 yrs old. No contradiction to us. Most of the old buildings are actually in use, as museums, or as private property. Personally, I think the cultural richness and diversity in Germany is even bigger than the architectural one, to be fair. Sure, it has walkways where the citizens can look down on the politicians and some mirrors to provide light ... but the style of the building [originally built 1884-94] was changed. "There is a cathedral or church" ... it is STANDARD "village design" (in Brandenburg / Prussia) to start with a CHURCH + house of the priest/SCHOOL ROOM + (optional) duck pond ... shaped like "an eye" with a one way road on both sides of this ... and farmer's houses on the outside of that road. If you look at the city plan of Berlin you can find loads of those "eyes" around a church. Building a church out of stone / bricks is STANDARD, because how else do you build something TO LAST? Wood ... like the silly americans? Nah.
