Finding that Realistic Scale in Cities Skylines 2 | Dewy del Mar #22
One thing that's bugged me about Dewy del Mar is that the scale of the downtown feels too big compared to the suburbs and outlying areas. It doesn't feel realistic because I've expanded upwards before outwards.
To help with the realism then, I'd like to add a new, primarily low-density neighborhood along the coast. This new suburb will (hopefully) help balance the scale of the city and make it feel more natural.
We'll do some road layouts, a new tram tunnel, then think about zoning and service buildings, and of course lots of detailing.
Thanks to @drewhanafin787 for the idea behind this build!

Today we're industrializing the river bank south of the city, taking inspiration from my home city of Seattle. The SODO area in Seattle is very similar to this region of the map, so we're taking cues from it for our highways, train yard, interchanges, and more! And always, we'll do some detailing at the end to give it a more realistic look. Links: - Map: Daybreak by Durwerd (mods.paradoxplaza.c...

Is it a mod or setting that changes the zoning squares to be lighter like that?
That would be the Whiteness Toggle mod!
pourquoi j'ai pas l'icone de la double pelle moi sur mon jeu ? j'ai juste la pelle normale et apres le bulldozer..
I think that's the Extra Detailing Tools mod!
Loving your videos
The most unrealistic thing is that a city like that should really have a population of 5 mill at least. Good one CO. Also I would expect a lot more development on the other sides of the rivers.
Ooh I've got plans for across the river! That's where I'm going to build the "New City" and the current development will collectively be known as the "Old City". But....I really want to wait for custom assets to come out before building the new downtown haha
I'm going to be honest I love your city but the palm trees get on my nerves sometimes they look so out of place..
Even along the coast?
@@skilzthatkilz11 idk its just like your city looks a lot more new york-esk the palms don't really fit it I can see your city being set around Maryland because I live around coastal Maryland but your city would have to be some where way more tropical and hotter to support all those palms..
@@skilzthatkilz11 And the Autumn Colors really make the palms stand out a lot more..
@@TrentonsUniverse Omg now that you've pointed that out, I can't unsee it haha. I started this whole series thinking if could be Floridian or Californian, but I've totally built it like a New York or Northeast city, you're so right. Welp, hmm, now I need to think about the foliage more haha
@@skilzthatkilz11 yeah lol looking forward to more episodes
Graffiti district sounds pretty good 52:40
I love your videos, bro. You're excellent at designing and building cities. I'm glad you're making such a beautiful and interesting content. But with all due respect, this double elevation at 6:11 sucks and these pillars at 7:22 look awful too. LOL. You could've saved yourself a lot of work by just lowering it a little bit more to ground level. You should've avoided that wall too, dude, by lowering the train rails and just let it smoothly descend to the next neighborhood and make it look more realistic. Anyways, keep doing your best, my friend 🔥😊
Ha well good news I get rid of that pillar at 7:22. But to each their own :)
You should consider trying to change the climate in the map editor (( they finally fixed it ), It's weird how there's coconut trees and it's so cold in October.
Can you update a map on a pre-existing city and it'll...just work?
What map and mode are you using?
Daybreak by Durwerd
Why there's a tower crane for 2 X 2 zoning construction ??? This game should be more realistic about that
Haha yeah
Let's build some cool new towns, in real life
Best CS2 series I've seen to date and you are a fantastic builder/planner! Keep it up, pleaee.
That's so kind of you, thank you!
hey, I noticed the map has a lot of colours, how do you get it?
Probably the Lumina mod, I set contrast and saturation to around 40
I immediately subscribed after watching just a second of the video. Love the channel, the city and your attention to detail. Keep it up mate
Hey thanks!
Looks so good! I would just add a tram stop between the Arts District and last stop (where the major commercial avenue/intersection is), right outside the other tunnel entrance.
Ooh yeah good idea, there's definitely a lot of commercial activity there that could use a tram stop. Thanks!
Was waiting for this episode. The bridge over Barlow Street looks really nice! Can't wait to see, what you plan on doing with the University. As somebody from a city with tons of Universities, who all look different I'm really excited about what you have in mind.
Oh what city are you from? Would love to google maps it and get some inspiration!
@@skilzthatkilz11 I'm from Berlin. We have a shit ton of Universities but three major public ones, who all look differently and all give different vibes. Humboldt University is basically one big ass building placed in the Heart of Berlin. Technical University Berlin is also located in the mid-west of Berlin but rather than one big building it's a bit more stretched out across a couple of streets. And lastly Freie University Berlin, which is basically a whole district in itself, with residential areas mixed in between. Like it's along a subway line (U3) and basically 4 stations long. It has it's own charme, because it has a lot of parks and café's and small neighborhoods between the different university buildings.
Oh that's awesome! Got a buddy who just moved to Mainz....which I'm now seeing is nowhere near Berlin haha. But cool, I'll definitely check out those universities!
@@skilzthatkilz11 Mainz is a great University city too. As far as I know it has the biggest campus in all of Europe. A lot of my friends went to University there haha
Ha that's awesome, small world!
Nıce and tons of greens, looks really calm..
Thanks! That was the hope
How I deal with fences in my city: Currently, even with mods, there is no way to control the color variation of fences, only props. While creating fence, I'll draw out a desired portion of fence. Then, I'll extend a few meters past that point and check the color. If it doesn't match, I'll disconnect, draw it out alone adjacent to the end point on open ground. Then, reconnect and draw out a few more meters while checking the color. I repeat this process until it matches the desired color and once the fence is complete, I'll go back and delete the short stubs that don't match. It is a little fussy, but worth the effort to get uniform colorways. Edit: Yes, please use the No Dead Trees mod. I use it in my city without any problems.
Dang, I was afraid it might be a process like that haha. But yeah, sounds worth it. Thanks for sharing!
the industry moguls mansion would be great for a like a private cliffside estate build, almost Tony Stark-esque
I can't wait for someone to make an actual Tony Stark mansion custom asset, once the importer is working
Thanks, awesome episode, nice detailing :) the video quality was kinda low though, sorta blurry, and there was no option for better quality, and I’m just watching on an iPad.
Huh...I recorded at 1440p, is that option not available from the gear icon on the youtube player on iPads?
Ohp ha you literally just said it wasn't. Weird okay I'll look into if there's anything different I can do for iPads!
@ it just said no video quality options available when I hit the drop down, I even went to another video to see if it was me but it was just your vid - I’ve never seen that before with your vids, it’s usually high quality. Appreciate the work you’re putting in to these!
Some of you guys have absoooolutely crazy fantasy! I play this for a long time and watch streamers but I am so envious of the great minds you have!
Aw thank you for saying that!
Thanks for the video, dude. It was a nice watch as usual On a sidenote, though, that neighborhood is too close to the city center for it to realistic be so low level and so spaced out. Houses there would be close to one another and some high and medium density residential buildings would still be around
You read my mind, next I need to work on the transitions from high to low density. But yeah I should probably make even the low density housing tighter
@skilzthatkilz11 looking forward to the next episode!
The way to get your hangaround areas to work is to plop down a park near by and drag the hang around area of the park to your desired area.
whoa TIL, thanks!
Shouldn't the bus line have a stop in the central bus hub station ?
I thought about that...but I was wondering if that was necessary with the tram line going there. The bus part of the central station isn't that big (only two pickup spots), so I think first I'll need to add another lane. There's room between the current bus lane and the road for another
The hills by the education center would be a great spot for the university. There’s plenty of room, and it won’t feel out of place since it’s near other schools. Plus, there’s enough space to add some student housing, too.
Good idea! Lord knows we need a university by this point, if my education demand bar has anything to say about it.
Absolutely love this city, great work!
Thank you!!
Actually now you my favorite CS2 TH-camr xD
Ha thanks!
The city is beautiful and the game is very good❤
Thanks for the kind words!
17:38 I'm pretty sure the way to make your fences stay one color is Asset Variation Changer, it lets you cycle through asset colors and decorations using your arrow keys. Though still unfortunately if you connect a fence to the middle of a different fence with snapping to geometry on it does split that fence into two different colors, so I just turn snapping to geometry off when I want to do that.
Oh you know....I swear I had that mod at some point, not sure why I removed it. But good call, I'll add that back to my playlist. Once I feel comfortable downloading mods and PDX has figured out the Traffic debacle haha
you have a beautiful city😆
Thank you!
Love the build and the series in general. Im not sure if the asset used as the base of Coit Tower actual functions and draws visitors to it so you may want to add a park on the opposite side of the street so people come to the area. All in all, phenomenal job as always
Thanks! And good call, I think it just boosts attractiveness stats or something...
It's painful to see 3 big parking lots it the row. I don't think that this city really needs this much.
Ha yeah probably a tad overkill, #america
@@skilzthatkilz11 But I really enjoy your videos. Thank you!
Hey man, this came out really nice, although I do feel it might've bene interesting to more free with the angles on the roadwork. In any case, it was an entertaining video! Also, since you mentioned the slope on your ramp from the highway, I went to check if the AASHTO Green Book specifies maximum slopes for the highways, but I wasnt able to find (apparently, they leave the definition of the maximum slope for the engineer, given directions on which criterias to use). So, since the brazilian guide actually offers limits, I thought it would help with some reference for futures builds, if you do desire on taking this into account. The guide divides highway classification into 6 categories (Class 0 to Class 5-B), with 3 terrain pattern each (plain, wavy, and mountainous). But I'll use an approximation here based on usual speed limits for each class and work with only three: 100 km/h (60-65 mph), 80 km/h (~50 mph), and 60 km/h (35-40 mph). I included the 60 km/h for reference on ramps, since it isn't unreasonable to force slower speeds on them because of the grading. For 100 km/h roads, the maximum slopes are: 3% for plain terrains, 4,5% for wavy terrains, and 6% for mountainous terrains. For 80 km/h roads, the maximum slopes are: 3% for plain terrains, 5% for wavy terrains, and 7% for mountainous terrains. For 60 km/h, the maximum slopes are: 4% for plain terrains, 6% for wavy terrains, and 8% for mountainous terrais. In extreme cases, these can go up to 6, 8 and 10%, respectively, but segments with grading greater than 8% can only be 300 m (~984 ft) long or less. Hope it helps!! :)
I am blown away by this! Thank you so much for unearthing this information, this is so helpful! I feel like every time I see a steep road incline, I wonder "what percentage is that?" haha. But yeah this gives me a great baseline for my builds for sure.
@@skilzthatkilz11 I'm glad I could help! And it's common for our minds to perceive slopes as more intense them they actually are. I've seen a social study that indicated that lots of people perceived slopes around 6-8% to be around 12-13%. Without working in the field, it would be reasonable to assume a 10% grade, like you did previously, was OK.
On a lark, I looked up street grades in San Francisco and the steepest are in the 30% range, which just blows my mind. Obviously those are residential, but wow. Can't imagine what those do to your brakes haha
@@skilzthatkilz11 Holly c, that's steep. But, yeah, there are some extreme granding out there. The Guiness has a road in New Zealand as the steepest, with around 35% steep. In Belo Horizonte, Brazil, there are roads with up to 55% (note that the method of calculating differs from the one used by the Guiness, wich considers only the center line of the road, while BH's city council consider other stuff as well, including the altitute from the start and the end of the road) Anyway, those are outliners, thankfully. Imagine living there and having to walk to the nearest bakery? Lol
Make some tourism features for it, that river would be a great place to tube or even just swim in.
Just finished binging the series-absolutely love the content! I think it would be great to see some low-density neighborhoods for people from a lower economic class who still want that quieter, suburban feel. Perhaps you could name one of the neighborhoods "Marco del Mar" to incorporate the Vasquez heritage and Spanish inspiration. Keep up the great work!
Hey thanks for watching! And no joke that's gonna be my next episode, creating a new low-density neighborhood north of San Alvaro heights along the highway. I have a tendency to "Manhattan-ify" everything which I'm trying to rectify, to your point.
Love it. I can’t wait for the next episode
Yay coming back from work and seeing another Dewy Del Mar videos 😁😁

Yeeey another video! Always a good day when you post.
Ha thanks! I'm glad you enjoy them :)
just randomly got recommended one of your vids and now I've spent my day binging your Dewy del Mar series. I really enjoy the eye to detail you have and the way you envision your city to look like. Keep up the great videos, they are a lot of fun to watch :)

I love your builds! can i also just say that, i really appreciate watching an episode to get to the final build, so when i see the preview of the final build at the beginning it spoils it a bit for me. it's probably just a me thing, but i love the videos anyway.
Heyo, that is totally fair! TBH I experiment with the intro for "youtube reasons" haha, to see if it helps with retention. I'm not sold it does. But I appreciate you sticking around to the end! Heck, it's more work to do intros like that so if y'all don't like it, fine by me!
@@skilzthatkilz11 the editing is lovely i promise you, i'm just one who likes to see your process too! it's fun to kinda be in on the build and find that conclusion with you. cant wait for the next one :)
I LOVE your videos, it always makes my day brighter when there’s more Dewy Del Mar content! Keep ‘em coming :)
Aw thanks man I appreciate that!
You should do a path between Garland and Hawthorne street for a quicker path to school and one between the castle and the college campus too but it's a great build otherwise.
I'm gonna need to review which street is which haha the names always change. But I like the idea of connecting the college to the castle, thanks!
you really grasped the idea of a western European townsquare perfectly. Love the deatils
Hey buddy I think your videos are too bright
Ugh yeah I'm sorry, I even made a comment about that half way through haha. I downloaded that candy commercial LUT and somehow got into a weird state with Lumina. I've reset my settings for now.
Good bro
Great episode! Gave me a good chuckle when the surface vanished lol ❤
Thanks!
Hey man I think it could be a good idea if you add rip rap (the funny rock wall) along side the marco vasquez riverside park as the local government would probably see it as an area of high value so they would like to protect it, You could also add small sea walls as it could still be badly damaged if a storm hits even though it is not on the coast line. The problem with this is if the local government has the funds to build and maintain the infrastructure as they are very expensive to build depending on the size of the infrastructure as they might want to put their budget in other areas such as the new city developers. (Btw I’m really enjoying the videos so please keep up the good work 😁)
Ooh yeah I'll check this out! I think City Planner Plays did something similar in his recent downtown redevelopment episode. The flooding risk would definitely be real in this city, so good idea 💡
@@skilzthatkilz11 Yeah very similar to what city planner plays did, he also talks about how it would slow down erosion which is also a reason for the local government to build it as their building is very close by. You could also build something similar to what London has called the Thames barrier which is a moving dam which stops storm surge (large waves) from hitting the city, It could be a little over kill but it was an idea to help protect downtown as it is a high risk area.
Church would have a vicarage or rectory :) Quite often the grandest house of the village at one time.
I had to Google what both of those meant lol
At 10:33 bro literally invented a treeline, like in Ukraine or Poland, or a different Eastern Europe country xDDD cool :)
you can put the more different trees in the treeline. So they can looks like more natural🤌
Nice narration and chill music. Good CS2 content :)
Thanks! Chill is what I'm going for 🙂
this looks great!! im super inspired now tbh lol.. do you have any plans to emulate beacon hill itself? i really like the way the light rail burrows under it for a station right in the middle, and its generally a pretty cool neighbourhood! i take the 36 or link up there pretty often to just walk around
Ayyy another Seattle local, love it. I wasn't thinking about future beacon hill development, but absolutely I love the light trail going through the hill.
