When it comes to looking for the best four season tents for winter camping or camping in bad weather (strong winds, heavy rain, snow storms etc) it's difficult to find anything that isn't super expensive or heavy.
However, the Luxe Hexpeak v4a, a largely overlooked budget pyramid tent similar to the MLD Duomid without the price tag, proves itself worthy of your attention. As I've shown across my channel, the Hexpeak is an incredibly capable lightweight tent, with excellent bad weather performance, ridiculous strength to weight ratio and a HUGE amount of space under its top-quality flysheet.
These pyramid tents do have a couple of drawbacks, though. The three season stock inner pushes the weight up and it's only really meant for camping in Spring, Summer and Autumn. But, I've solved these issues and in this video I'll show you my latest upgrade to this AWESOME tent; a lightweight four season inner installed for an all-in-one pitch!!
With this new inner, the Hexpeak is now LIGHTER by ~500g, it's WARMER for long nights winter camping, it's MORE VERSATILE for ease of pitching and it's EVEN BETTER for camping in bad weather thanks to its enhanced insulation from strong or cold winds! All in all, this simple modification means that my Hexpeak is now fully equipped for long distance backpacking adventures and four season camping in ALL weather conditions!

Just ordered a hex peak looks like it a little more complicated Thant my current set up but really like setting up rain fly first.
Great video. I was looking at walking from Girvan to Ayr and wondered about the direct route from the lighthouse rather than the detour. I couldn't find anyone that had done it. My understanding is that the outdoor access code lets you walk over a course asking as you stick to the edge of the fairways and don't obstruct play.
Hi! Thanks! Aye, I’ve walked the course many times and I’ve never had an issue with anything/anyone, it’s nicer to stick to the coastline anyway - I’m always surprised that there isn’t just an easy wee path from the course into the harbour though, perhaps cutting through Malin Court, though the harbour beach is accessible if the tide is low.
The cave goes further but been blocked whats behind the black cked entrance
Like you videos - I have a hard time making my mind up as to choose either this tent or the Luxe Mini Peak II - have you trues that one as well? Any thoughts?
Well done and nice modifications. This will probably be my next tent: Lots of space, very steady in wind and no flapping tent fabric - I fuc..ng hate that😅
Thanks a lot just what a wanted to know: When the weather turns bad will you tent protect you and not keep up awake and very nervous all night!? Just had gale winds in 1450 meters in Norway and my Fjällräven Abisko Endurance just stood there..and my nest 1 person tent is going to be the Luxe Outdoor👍🏻
2 quite different tents though? The hexpeak weighs almost double and the pack size is larger. like them both and probably worth getting either tbh. depending on conditions which one you take
You have to go with a powder to detect if the bleeding continues
Can you even imagine living in that dark hellhole ? 😮😮😮 thank you for the tour , subscribed from Canada 🇨🇦 😊 I like your dog 😅
What is the difference between luxe minipeak and hexpeak? And which one would you recommend?
Hi..in your opinion, would a standard trekking pole that is long enough(extends to 140-145cm) be strong enough to support the tent in bad weather? That missing link really sounds like a pain to me..
Hi, aye definitely! You could add the second one as well for backup 👍🏻
The fact that just a standard trekking poles are not really suitable makes this tent less desirable for many i think. Why wouldnt they provide some simple extension for a single pole ..
I managed to get the Leki “Voyager” poles, which work very, very well 👌🏻
Is that brita filter botle??
Hello,is 135 cm pole sufficient for a good pitch of hex peak?
From what I have seen no it's not. You should use 2 Trekking Poles connected together either with straps or with an item called "missing-link", or of cause just cord an a knot.
2:35-2:38 your dog looks to be getting dragged but hes doing some sort of crazy moon walk!! Beautiful dog
did merrick n the area in april. been a lot of tree felling. hardly any on path as you go through that iron gate. must admit i love to walk down the valley n watch the hand take shape. there’s a scramble up merrick vid some water falls
Scariest one in world
I have the hexpeak and its a great tent that i would definitely trust in these conditions. Just needs a longer pole as most walking poles dont reach the length required which from memory is 140cm
Can 135 be enough for a decent pitch?
You need to grow a moustache mate , that just looks so wrong.
Thanks for the advice, I’ll get right on that for you 👌🏻🤣
Went there as a wee lad when my mum and dad has a caravan at bennane head 😁 Also remember snib's cave when the road went past there and he still lived in it Memories ❤❤
I’ve heard a lot of local folk saying the same, my father in law is a Girvan resident and he’s spoken about Snib many times. Respected medical practitioner decided to give it all up and live in a cave, what a lad 🤣💪🏻
@@outlawedlandscapesperhaps he learned something the big people weren't ready for? Do a video on that guy please.
The lanshan has won people over but it rubbish in wind, and as I found out hiking on chalk downs, impossible to pitch in hard earth. Thanks for switching me on to the hexpeak
I’m the market for a tent and have been looking at the Hexpeak. You’ve just confirmed the sale for me!!! That’s insane how differently they handle the wind. The Lanshan sounds like tinfoil!!!!
Hi mate, I bought the inner you recommended, but I will be honest.. despite slowing your video to x0.25 speed, I don't think I have the ingenuity to set it up the way you have. I mucked about with just some bungy and although the bathtub wasn't perfect (never was with the old inner either) I think it might be ok for the single overnighters. What do you think? Also, how the feck did you repurpose the original line locks!? They are a sealed unit. I've been using others tents for the last year, so I'm looking forward to getting this out again, with the reduced weight. Oh, the pegs you mentioned, I just got the 15cm ones, but wow!! Not seen a vid from you in a while, hope you're ok?
Another cave. Not far from here. th-cam.com/video/E7GXExz706A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kuXxr0vMsG8MOPW7
I enjoy your videos and hope you get past the things that are preventing you from filming more. I’m a hex peak fan and have watched your modifications many times. I still need to get it sorted properly. Best wishes.
I finally got rid of my v4a and bought the f6a (it's big brother). Use the same 3ful inner. Appreciate the extra room.
There was also severe hatred towards the Scots and Sawny was a negative contagion for Scottish men. The British were not good people back then.
Scots are Brits you genius.
Is the legend true. Hi my name is Stephen Dennis. My family was the Bean's. I've been following this story ever since I realized it's my family. Oh a 100% it's both true and exaggerated. The cave doesn't have capacity for the amount of body's and 30 live individuals
The real cave isn't this one, it's a little ways around the bend.
Thanks mate. I was thinking of pulling the trigger on the Lanshan but can't see it handling a stormy Cape Wrath trail. Can you add extra guys to the Hexpeak? I'm thinking Delta Anchors and extra guys and that thing would be bombproof.
Hope you're well. Will you be doing any more videos looking forward to your next outing
One of the nicest places in the world
Nice video b I know this road to girvan and the town so so well. Just never did this walk.
Much respect for a joirney fraught with problems. Glad you made it back safely. Two questions: 1. Were you able to get your tent repaired, and 2. What was the overall distance you hiked?
Hi mate, really enjoy this video. I'm looking to do a wild camp here in a couple of weeks, can I ask where you parked and how long the trek was overall? Cheers again.
Hello from germany, hope you had a peaceful xmas- time. Your videos about the Sil Hexpeak are very intersting. Thank you very much for the time to create the videos. I think about to buy the hexpeak but i don't know if it have enogh space for me in the inner tent. When my sleep- Setup is build in and my size(1,83m). What do you think?
At around 7:53 when you're coming out of the cave, there is a flash of light behind you
Ohh, I never noticed that before! Probably a reflection from the light at that angle as the upper walls are very damp 😉 …or maybe not!
Really do you think at this cave were live 50 people?
In its current state, no, but it’s a fun legend 😉 There is a passage that’s blocked though, which is supposed to have followed a fault to Colmonell nearby - used by smugglers.
Good video thanks
it been said that the real Sawney Bean is the one that people could only acsess when a sea level recedes...
Yes, this one.
And with ocean two meters higher than 1500s....
Where abouts is this I think I know where do you go from the layby
Hi mate, lay-by at the crest of Bennane head, jump the fencing (should be obvious) then follow the wee path north, it sweeps round and then down into the cove through the Bracken 👌🏻 Take your time though as it can be slippy/steep.
Hi Outdoor Landscapes! I will be buying the V4A after research and your excellent videos on it. My only concern is the large footprint (fantastic in all other respects). Is it ok when pitched on less than perfect level/narrow ground?
Excellent ! Thank you.....
Thanks so much for these videos OL, I hope to do the TGO Challenge and am seriously looking at the V4A. I’m just worried about the large footprint on a less than perfect pitch. Is this a big concern?
Hi Lynn 😁 I haven’t had an issue with the footprint, as you can base the pitch around the inner to suit the ground. The good thing about my mods is that you can lengthen/shorten the tie outs to suit any contours; just as long as you get a decent flat spot for the inner. ATB 😀
From a maidens local great to see Girvan not what it used to be But Maidens still looks great but omg the House prices for locals Dunure great the coast road is also a great drive great video
Hi, awesome update on the hexpeak. Do you have the link for this inner? Cheers
Now that's an adventure 😀
I love my HexPeak but I need more practice with it. I made a few mods too. I stitched a plastic hook to the inside of the sleeping compartment on which to hang a light if I wanted. I also made a second inside pocket out of an old drybag what was broken. I also got a hexagonal groundsheet, as I live in dusty Australia, and I painted a rectangle on that, along with a mark for my centre pole. I use half a dead tennis ball as my pole base. I am still not thrilled with my lines, but I think this video has convinced me I need to make a few more mods.. Thank you.
its like taking a dachsund on a deer hunt
😄
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Inspiring me to get out with the pooch and do something similar! Keep the videos coming, love them!
