Project Phoebe - Building the computer that never was - Part 1
Well, here we are again folks, another video, and might I add another rollercoaster of disasters... But I'll let you watch it to find out
We have here a computer case from a project that was cancelled 25 years ago today, and never actually saw the light of day. Today, we look at giving the old case some purpose by putting a computer in it
I hope you enjoy!

Windows 98 Machine Build - Part 5 - Finale

We got there in the end, the Windows 98 machine is finally done, and all working, as far as I know. This video still shows more of the same kind of difficulties I went through, but, after about the 4th attempt at re-installing, it finally worked out. Phew. Remind me never to build another of these ever again, at least, until the next time ;)

Casio MG-510 Guitar Repair/Refurbishment #1 - Guitar Adventures #3
Laminated tonewood. Plywood. Love my pelican pink Marlin. Like the humbucker, not the single coil pups.
What's happening to the screen is only skin deep, just the front layer of the LCD - the front polariser - is breaking down. Those lines are at 45 degrees because that's the angle of linear polarisation that the front polariser uses. The screens in the 2300c are just as rare as the PB 2300c itself. I have the Toshiba Portege 610CT which uses basically the same panel and they are now really hard to find! The one I sourced from china maybe 3 years ago has already developed vinegar syndrome / polariser breakdown too so I've got to replace the polariser on mine soon as well. It's do-able, just takes some patience to get the original polariser off and clean all the glue away. I found sticky stuff remover does a good job on the glue. The polariser film on a TFT is quite widely available and you can get adhesive and non-adhesive sheets. I just got some non-adhesive gloss linear polariser sheets and they look pretty good on a similar display I just replaced the polariser on.
Where is part 2?
Still not in existence sadly. Motivation is a problem
Bought a broken Casio midi guitar . I knew it wasn't working but I was going to refit it with a Roland midi pickup. The Casio midi electrics seem ok just the owner has taken of the midi out plug. The 9volt switch and there are just bare wires hanging about. Is it worth repairing please
really curious to know what you've done with this guitar. I want to take that cheap body and make a proper 80's shredder out of one. Only one I can find is on reverb sold in italy and it would cost me 600 bucks US which I'm NOT paying for one of these lol.
Pretty much done nothing yet lol, I will, someday, but my plan could be to discard everything other than the body which I will clean up, and then build back with better quality parts. Pretty much only got this for around £20, so not bad to build on
@@PIPERdotEXE Oh you got a steal compared to what I've found. This was my first ever electric guitar as a kid. My dream is to make it a really solid super strat with a mid boost for those 80's clean tones like Glory of Love and Purple Rain have, and obviously the distortion tones like Whitesnake and Def Leppard. I'm hoping to run across one someday. It's obviously cheap, but if you put the right work into it, you could make something REALLY cool out of it.
My power supply popped too. New RIFA sorted it out. Love the detailed video, great watch. Have to get my hands on one of the 2300s.
Are the pickups ceramic or alnico?
I bought this exact setup brand new when it came out. It was awesome.
I also have both types; I built an NLX PC board into one (and pushed that beyond the limit upgrade wise). Was a great gaming machine, alongside my RPC
Nice build, i have the same gpu for my personal win xp overkill build, the mighty 980ti
Hi I have one of these Duos, and the smaller docks. This video may actually help me out when I get to do some fixes on mine :) I think its worth checking what the memory settings are set to and that may help with the start up speed, especially if Virtual Memory is on and if the disk cache is set to a weird size. Also if you make sure that the SD is set to the startup disk and that it has networking turned off, this can help as well. It turns out the MacOS versions below 10 can hang the machine a bit while it checks for network connections, even if they are not plugged into anything.
Nice vid, pity people dont do any research starting something like this. Any gpu above geforce fx series does not have shader model 2.0, misses paletted textures and table fog giving visual glitches while gaming and later drivers give much to much driver overhead giving the cpu even more to do while all these systems already have a cpu bottleneck to start with. The p4 is a good pick though, it will run win 98se till 10 32 bit. Only win 10 needs to already be installed on the disk.
Great video! Will there be a part 2?
There sure will.... eventually lol, it's like a lot of my videos, I just need to get on and do it
@@PIPERdotEXE Good news, can barely wait for it. I actually have one of those ripped apart somewhere in a closet. Haven't gotten around to it in years ... hopefully it didn't develop the same display problem in the meantime.
can you share the hda? link?
Whoops you bought a pentium 2 eras SDRAM DIMM 😅
Yeah, bit of a brain fart, but I guess we all have them lol
I sorta liked the video, but I quit after some time because of the brain damaging background "music". Without that it would be fine and quite helpful.
What's wrong with the music? The fact it's there? Too loud? I disagree that with it there it makes the video somehow "unhelpful"
@@PIPERdotEXE The problem is background music/noise itself. It's a constant strain on the brain of a noise sensitive person, and it's completely unnecessary. I like your content, btw. Have a P475 running myself.
cool
So, I'm confused. Will this be a PC, an emulated RISC PC or will it be something else. Whatever you do, I'm sure will work out, but surely you could have based this project on an ARM motherboard like the titanium or the RPi 4. The would really play homage to the legacy of the Phoebe. Nevertheless, I'm intrigued. Back in the day I read the reviews and would have been interested in buying one. I still have a working Australian made RiscStation 7500 clone.
Ok, so the goal was mostly to fill out/make use of the case with a board that is the correct form factor, NLX, as we could never get hold of any original hardware, it would have to be a PC board. There is a plan to put a Pi in this case, but the PC board will be left in there still (at the very least after I stop using it it will look the part). I have looked at the Titanium but it is like £500... no way, while I want something more era accurate, that's nuts. Just be patient. There will be a Pi
Yes, the Titanium is a bit on the expensive side, probably due to the small production. Having said that, do not install Windows on that thing. Not only will you be cursed by the Acorn Gods, you will go be contributing to the dark side. I have RPCEmu running under both Linux and FreeBSD. You choose how you want history to remember you 🙂.
I'm sorry, Windows is going on it, albeit briefly, I have no regrets, hahaha. As I say this was mostly to make use of the case for something meaningful. But there are other alternatives too, I saw some Castle Technology motherboards on eBay not so long ago, these are basically the Phoebe project realised, wished I'd got one now
acer desktop pc was nice
You've lost the plot alright, you should base this around a Raspberry PI or similar ARM SBC, for the record there are some expansion boards for the CM4 specifically supposed to be a mainboard ITX compatible which would be better for this for the simple fact that RiscOS will run native on the thing instead of committing the heresy this thing is.
Great things are rarely done easy, and never the way we imagine them. Suggestion, relocate the mounts by tapping in new holes to align with the riser holes. Yes, it sucks but the payoff will be worth it. As for the MB (when you find it,) consider a tray mount, whether a plywood or acrylic, either way should work and even slides would be a plus. That way if the MB mount holes do not mount with the slides there's still the sheet to insert the mounts on regardless. Welcome to the nineties where retrofits are a walk through hell in gasoline coated underwear, as anyone who has built a sleeper with components from the day. Anyways, good luck, I am rooting for ya.
Now you need a proper ARM motherboard with something like X-Gene 1 APM883408-X1 and a RAID of HDDs, so it could be turned into a modern RISC OS web server. Otherwise it won't any more interesting than a Pi. Inserting a Pentium makes it look like a Chinese counterfeit Famicom clone.
Just throw a Pi in there...behind the plastic cover. Runs RiscOS and no internal parts needed. :D
I know what happend with the motherboard. I sold it together with the case.
Would the "small computer" at the end be a raspberry pi? I mean it would be a bit more modern and it wouldn't look as retro if you looked inside but if you used that, it is ARM architecture after all and since you can actually run RISC OS on it which would in some way be more authentic than running with a pc motherboard and windows from the era. You could even use the optical, floppy and ide drives via adapters internally. (though no idea how support is for that sort of stuff is in the modern variant of RISC OS that runs on the raspberry pi).
Yes it would be, I was going to do it anyway, but perhaps should have done it first, if I had known how hard this was going to be. As for at least floppy support via USB, I have heard that this is spotty, it can read MS formatted floppies, but has issues reading Acorn formatted ones. I will however check this out in due time anyway
Beside Pi, there are laptops and server boards, which can be turned into a desktop computer and made run RISC OS.
An interesting project! Ive subscribed as a result.
Why thank you :) this one might be a little while, while I work through some issues, there were a lot of problems in this video
Hmmm, you could make CD-ROM brackets and an adapter for the ISA/PCI backplane with a 3D printer and some CAD trial and error ;)
0:25 You guys used a lot of weird computers we never got in America. We had Apple Macs with black & white screens in school.
please retire the background you use at 1:55
u lost me at pentium 2
Lol it's a CPU 😂
@@PIPERdotEXEJabil Maverick NLX board (440BX) is what I used; it was a Pentium II board, but I upgraded it to Tualatin 1.4 GHz. Plus GeForce (GeForce 3 would not post, and was not supported on the amcint V1.0a AGP. However, it did work if I put a PCI GeForce 2MX in as well, which was weird!
You didn't put the motherboard in the other case before selling it?
No, definitely not, I think I even got the board after I sold the other
@@PIPERdotEXE I lost a keyboard a while back, I think it was inside something I gave away, will never know but I can't think of any explanation for it.
Ow, how much I understand you :D I wish you a mountain of patience! Great video, I look forward to the next one.
How the world has come around with ARM getting into more and more PC(-like) use cases and encroaching on the territory of x86.
Yeah, it's almost like revenge or something lol it's quite the redemption ark lol
Good video and a pretty great build! - Yeh it is definitely an issue getting those higher clocked Pentium 4 CPUs for a decent price. There's also the Extreme Edition 3.73 Ghz for the 775 socket but Ive not seen it any less than $900 AUD. a 3.4 Ghz is very respectable for a Windows 98 build - my current build is a Socket 478 running a 3.0Ghz overclocked to 3.3, and a Radeon 9800 Pro, so more of a "ultimate socket 478" build I suppose for mine. Regarding your power supply conundrum, I'd highly recommend picking up pretty much any modern 80plus gold or better PSU. Modern PSUs start usually at 500W which is more than enough for a retro machine. You should be able to pick one up under $100 AUD easily. Hope to see you complete it soon, along with some benchmarks? I'd be very keen to compare :) Best of luck!
Hey thanks man, yeah, it's pretty stupid what they go for... like even one core of an i3 can smash them, anyways, that Extreme Edition is the grail, and I don't expect to see that for decent money any time soon. I do at least intend to get a 3.8, whenever I see one for a good price Yeah, I mean there's no point, or safe reason for getting an old one, and those adapters are actually unsafe Sure, I work full time, but it will be done, for sure!
I tried to watch the video, but the disco duck jam was so loud and annoying, I decided it was worth it
Disco duck jam?
You could use a zip 100 drive to store up to 100mb on the disk or even 250 with the zip250
See other comments as to why I won't be doing that
Any plans of a 15 Years Anniversary Build of Windows 7?
Hey, I would love to do that, and one is coming, but honestly it might be too soon especially the way I do them, as in trying to put the best hardware it supports,.I might do that one on the 20th. I suppose I could do something for the 15th, it just occurs to me it doesn't have to be the most powerful. What do you reckon?
where did you get that motherboard i can't find one.
They were on eBay, not sure if there's any left
The X79 Platform officially supports XP.
What happened with Ultimate XP Machine? I can't find part 2.
That's because it hasn't been made yet, Ifm.having a hard time getting back into it, sometimes I just don't have time... It will get done, it should take me two years, but here we are I suppose
My ultimate Win98 PC is .... Actually an Windows XP desktop. Pretty much any game or software works on it. I do have some more period correct hardware. Though uhh... A Geforce 6800 paired with a P3 is a bit lopsided. Even though it a 1GHz model! I might want to swap out the motherboard as well. Runs on a VIA chipset that is a bit buggy. Any suggestions? Game ON!
Definitely get a new PSU. Your old one has 15 amps on the 12v rail, meaning it can only output 180w of 12v power. Considering you have a Pentium 4 and a GPU with a 6 pin, that's not going to be enough. Not really sure what good budget options are, the most budget PSU I've gotten recently was the Thermaltake Toughpower GX2 600w. It's actually more overkill for the purpose I currently have it for than it would be in your machine. Any reputable brand 400w with a proper 12v rail (30+A) and 80+ Bronze should be fine.
any seasonic is good
Man. If only more people found your amazing content.❤
Well that's very kind of you to say 😁
He just hit my recommendation, prepare for a boom
Nice build so far. I'd advise to monitor that electrolytic capacitor next the PCIE slot, right under the M of MSI. It seems to be bulging. Board might still work fine but this cap might need replacing sooner or later.
Oh, I didn't notice that, I will have another look, the board in general looked pretty good, luckily it hasn't been powered on yet
Buy a modern power supply and don't risk any damage. P4 and later mobos are using 12v rails for powering up CPU from EPS 4pin, so u should pick up 300-350W PSU of good brand, in example Corsair/BeQuiet/Chieftec/FSP - i don't know what brands are popular in your country, but i really recommend BeQuiet PSUs due to their stability, quiet work and resonable price, at least in Poland
Loved the vid, I've been seriously considering a windows 98 retro rocket, and this ticks all the boxes for me. I may try to replicate your build after you get it done. It would be nice if you reviewed some software on it, I'm fairly certain that there are some older 95/98 games that have issues when you use cards from late in the 98 lifecycle. I always assumed the reason was "a card was made, all current games play it fine, each bug that was found was fixed and then soemone... slapped in an old game, but it was already past end of support for 98 for a fix to get created" I wish I had a list off the top of my head, but I'm sure some kind people here could drop a line for games that have compatibility issues with high end hardware. It's crazy that Windows 98 existed and was used in an era where the clock speed spanned ~200mhz to 4ghz!
You can use some female-male dupont cables and make the correct correspondence between the Motherboard and the front panel cable
Probably says more about me, but the video quality seems fine 🤷
I think it's just something I get self conscious about, I wonder if some people would be like eww... I'm maybe worrying too much
