FDISK /MBR (to clean up the master boot record of the SSD to Windows 98se's liking), then FDISK. FORMAT C: /U /C (to fully format and check the SSD for Windows 98se to like it). Some solid state drives act funny with 98se unless you do the above.
Why I just went to eBay luckily found cheap but guaranteed white label ide hard drives with a three year warranty. My windows 98se machine has 40 gb 7200 rpm western digital white label drive. My windows 95 one has a Matrox 20gb drive. Eventually I’ll go with compact flash when they die. The issue I have is in ms dos mode neither system can find enhanced 386 memory mode so some old dos games will not work. I gave up on that part. I’m surprised that the Matrox drive hasn’t failed yet I always had issues with that brand but so far it’s been great two years strong….
