Welcome to Peak Classic Cars.
I'm Phil Woods from the Midlands, UK.
Welcome to my channel, dedicated to the classic and retro cars and bikes that I buy, restore, drive and sell. I make weekly videos focusing mainly on the rescue, repairs, restorations and ongoing maintenance, but I'm going to add content about the trials and tribulations of attempting to daily drive them too.
Follow me for the ups and downs, the fun road trips, car shows and the epic fails and breakdowns. I tend to swap cars a lot so there's always something happening.
Thanks for looking!
Phil.

1985 Rover SD1 2000T - Part 4 - Intercooler hard lines and more engine bay dry build
Can't be bad...I've found time to work on my own car again! It's always nice to spend a few hours working on the SD1, and although progress is much slower than I'd like we're moving forward, and getting closer to a completed engine bay. Intercooler hard lines, a new Inlet manifold, clutch slave and starter motor this time!

It's been a while since I worked on the P6, it's definitely getting harder now the colder darker nights are here so we have to sneak in an hour or two when we can. In this video we've finally got all the damaged parts of bodywork removed, cleaned up and start the structural repairs to get the front end back together again. Finally...after around 18 months of ownership the Volvo 850 T-5R is complete. Part 3 on the SD1 has been a little while coming. I always try to prioritise the project cars and tend to neglect my own, so as it was a nice day and I had a little time I thought the SD1 deserved some love. Mocking up everything in the engine bay was always going to take a little time, but the serious work of moving the radiator and mounting the intercooler and oil cooler is well on the way. H...

How to make your own Coilovers on a budget!
Just to check video colour accuracy, is this one Limeflower? I have an M plate that looks the same.
A turbo would have livened up the old 2.0 o series engine. I previously had a 2 litre SD1 - not as slow as you would think.
You know how it is... Casually browsing around the internet looking at nothing in particular... Open the ebay tab and OOOPS! Your cursor, through no fault of you own of course, "accidently" hits the several buttons in succession it takes to place a bid on an item. Happens to me all the time.
@@ReValveiT_01 Haha, my thoughts exactly.
With a turbo engine the inlet manifold will predominately be positive pressure so won`t provide vacuum to the servo, you need a connection to the intake before the turbo or an alternative solution such as electric vacuum pump.
@paulcharlton2353 Something to look Into for sure. Odd though as this is exactly the same vac port, in the same place that is used on the T Series Turbo engine for the brake servo. I'll look into it! 👍
@peakclassiccars if it is it will need a non return valve like the one in the original pipe unless it's built into the manifold fitting.
@@paulcharlton2353 I'll make sure I fit the non return valve in there!
Mistake to delete the power steering there is plenty of space using a serpentine belt?. Why not leave the rear brakes alone until the car is running its just another headache you don't need
@grahamwhitfield5870 The 2600 PS pump sits where the T Series alternator lives so I did need the space, plus I have a brand new non power rack to go on along with all new suspension/bushes/ball joints front and rear. The rear disc brake conversion I just like the idea of. As it's my car there's no rush to get it done, I just want it how I envision it if that makes sense?
@@peakclassiccarsNon-power racks on these are really low ratio. Loads of turns lock to lock. Horrible to use (I know, my SD1 used to have one!). I'd definitely try and get the PS pump in somewhere else. Doesn't need to be in the same position, you can get different hoses made up by someone like pirtek or any other hydraulics company. Or keep the standard PS pump location and shift the alternator somewhere else. Definitely worth it. Hell, you could even use something like the electro-hydraulic power steering from a 106 or something. Electric motor on a hydraulic pump running power to the steering. Stick it anywhere you like in the bay and run some hoses, then you're good.
Regarding servo pump, why not convert to an electric pump? Vauxhall or Volvo pumps are commonly used and with the correct CANBUS adapter you can adjust the support.
Certainly worth looking into, something I'd not thought about actually, cheers!
Sorry to hear you incurred a ebay wkr. The SD1 engine bay is going to look real tidy when it's all done.
Ah it happens. Shame though as we had a couple of other projects lined up that have fallen through now. There will be others though. Thank you...It's really starting to come together.
Sorry you've been messed around by an ebay buyer. Nightmare - I won't use it anymore as it's constantly a bad experience. You seem to get a better buyer on Car & Classic. Anyway, good progress - it'll be amazing when it's done
I think I've been lucky to be honest, the last 5 cars I've done all sold brilliantly on eBay with no issues. Just a bad one this time! Car and Classic might be worth a look actually, cheers for that!
Do you have any crumpling further down in the engine bay? Mine does so i've decided to take it to a shop but now im concerened for you.
@@samuelellis3774 Nothing that I can find. Everything else looks fine.
Great progress - not sure I'd ever be as brave with that saw but all credit to you

I'm impressed with that pneumatic reciprocating saw, seems powerful.
@Jambo-u2k it's a brilliant little tool, less noise than the grinder, neater and less mess.
great work. :::::Looks really nice.

Looking great! Only thing I would say is the rear end looks too high for a T-5R. Should get a decent amount for it I would have thought. Loads of interest!
@kevincharnley7092 Thank you! Not sure why, could have been the uneven ground I guess as its all stock and hasn't been changed at all.
I was intrested unitl i saw it was a atuo. No doubt it will sell. Most likley will go between 5k to 8k
@mabskha7917 Thank you! I do love a Manual gearbox but they're even rarer I think, a quick look suggests only 73 Dark green manual estates ever came to the UK!! Fingers crossed it'll find a good home.
The T5-R should make a decent enough price, the market is fairly strong at the moment I think. It's been a awesome project from start to finish, thanks for posting..
@Jambo-u2k Thank you! Fingers crossed it sells well. We'll see. I like 99p starts as it gives everyone a chance to have a bid and they find their own value.
Very well done on saving a great car - looks great👍
@OldCarsNewVan Thank you!
Nice to see a MK1 on here. Lucky enough to own a 3.4 manual which already has some of the mods you have mentioned such as the 420G from beam (PAS and bigger brakes) along with the MK2 rear axle (power lock diff). Also has the XJS manual gearbox with O/D so all in all very drivable. Oddly enough I also own a couple of Volvo 850R estates (both manual) - noticed you did a T5-R a while back :) Keep up the good work!
Fantastic job , loved the video , can you remind me where it is advertised , I could be interested depending on price ( as always ). Cheers

If you tell I can tell these problems. Where can I tell? Here or email?
The power to weight and weight distribution of this thing will be very interesting to see 👍 The RV8 is undoubtedly lighter (or at the very lease similar in weight) to a T16 turbo. I have solid, pictographic evidence of a carbed Rover V8 weighing in at 167kg fully dressed (only thing missing is exhaust manifolds and air filter gubbins). Don't believe the ~230kg figure that's bandied about online, that double-counts a lot of accessories. I've got a weight for an NA T16 at 140kg, but without a picture of it being weighed I don't trust it much. Would be interesting to see what a fully dressed T16 turbo weighs. What's interesting though is the RV8 sits with the centreline of the strut towers slap bang in the middle of the 2nd cylinder on the right bank. Your T16 looks like it's between cylinders 1 and 2, so further back in the bay. Intercooler will shift some weight forwards though. May end up with better distribution 🤔 at minimum no worse. Oh, and the 6-cylinder you pulled out is 220kg so way heavier (weighed it myself), though that included a torque converter and flex plate instead of just a flywheel, and a PS pump that the RV8 weight didn't have. Not sure where they sit in the bay I'm afraid.
Great work. My auto vitesse with tvr 3.9 engine had the oil cooler mounted under the car, not sure if thats a help for you but guessing it was put there due to space restrictions? Something you dont have with the T16 engine in there. Excited for the results. Great video btw
@willshaw24 Thank you. TVR 3.9 sounds good! Haha, yeah plenty of space in there...when I test fitted it I wondered where the rest of it was! 😀
My father had a Rover SDI with a 2l engine and he felt it was far too underpowered.
@jujuUK68 The 2 litre O series was definitely underpowered. Luckily, this is the 200+ BHP T series turbo, so will have more power than a Twin Plenum Vitesse. Hopefully that'll be enough! 😀
Got a 2.6 myself and was wondering if this conversation was possible. Looking forward to seeing it driving 👍🏻
@davidspark2633 I've wondered about it for a while, a few people know a lot more than me about it but as far as I'm aware there's not a completed car yet. Fingers crossed.
If you're getting rid of the 2.6 I'll have it 😂 lot of untapped potential in those. Just a cam regrind and rejetting should see 150ish hp (what the development engines were making).
@BiTurbo228 already gone unfortunately, gave it away to a bloke as a spare for his 2600. It was a decent engine...only around 80k miles too.
I find this conversion fascinating.
@@Jambo-u2k Thank you! It should be fun.

First few seconds aged well 🤣

Coming on well, poor colour match on that front wing tho unfortunatley unless its just how it looks on the screen.
I noticed that in edit too. It's a Pearl Green and I think it's just the camera/low sunlight as it certainly looks good in real life. Plus the front end is clean and the rest hasn't had a wash in 16 months. Argh... I'm paranoid now I'm going to have to check tonight and give the car a proper clean/valet. 🤣
Oops, sorry about that,it's still looking great tho.i guess that's a very hard colour to blend in perfect.i just have ocd on repainted panels not being perfect.had it on my daily jag once.had to have a wing on and looked perfect unless at certain angles.ended up getting shot of the car lol.

The 850 T-5R couldn't have turned out better. Quite a beautiful design of a car. If it was the saloon version it would just be ugly, Is there such a thing as a 850 T-5R saloon?
@Jambo-u2k Thank you! There certainly is a saloon, available in the same green, a rare light yellow and a couple other colours. There's something about the estate though!
please use jack stands....
Normally I'd always have one under there, 100% always do if I'm going under the car. But yeah, I should have used one in this case just for added security. 👍
I tried. Bought my 1985 SD1 Vitesse in ‘05 and it was my first and only car. Drove it when i needed throughout the year (which wasnt a lot) and after a few winter drivers it already started rusting. So no, i would not daily an SD1.
@rovervitesse1985 Yeah they do like to rust don't they! First car a Vitesse though. Nice! 😎👊
@@peakclassiccarsyeah in Targa Red. Was a real nice example. I had it for 17 years and sold it in '22. There are some videos of it still on my YT if you're curious 😅. My folks had a 1979 mk1 2600 from 1986 till 1988
@@rovervitesse1985 I check it out. A Targa Red Vitesse, what's not to like.👍
I am making this comment before watching part 2. I definitely would have tried pulling this straight myself before fitting new panels. Some heat, various hammers and a porta power body repair kit. If it does not work, at least I tried.
Thanks for the comment! I probably should have, as it wasn't too bad at all when we really looked into it. However when you watch the other videos you'll see that the car is all repaired and currently sat at the bodyshop now. Next time I might have a go at pulling the damage!

@@TB-ke1mz Thank you!
Another great video mate and very informative always worry about the fuel tank in my SD1 so this will always be an option if it springs a leak 👍
Fantastic.
I can understand why you didn’t wanna take the engine out, personally I would’ve, as leaving the timing gear exposed like that isn’t a good idea, but at least cover it up while you’re cutting and grinding, but make sure whatever you cover it with is clean and non flammable, but one of many reasons with a job like this it’s best to remove the engine and it makes measuring easier and gives better access to be able to weld the new panels in, I’ve over 40 years experience in crash repairs, sometimes you have to bite the bullet.😉 best of luck, I hope it goes well👍
Whilst not always possible, it's still worth mentioning that where possible, do the job on an empty tank! Makes things a lot easier if you have the ability to plan for it that is!
@ToolsnTrack Definitely! We were keeping an eye on the gauge (and not filling up) and it just fell right. Luckily the Supra has a tank drain too unlike some cars.
@@peakclassiccars yep, although I sure as hell didnt trust mine not to shear and take tank with it!
@ToolsnTrack I wouldn't have gone for it either, but Mel is a savage and just went for it. Luckily came undone fine.
would it have been worthwhile taping the holes over when moving the tank around with the last bit to seal the tank inside completely|? Regards
@captainbrianwilkinson7723 thinking about it now, yes..it would probably have been a good idea! The tank looked really quite good inside and I know these suffer around the seams so we concentrated there. If I was to do it again I'd tape the holes off though. Good call! 👍
Yep.. Anyone with a bit of sense loves and old Rover but for the love of god don't let go of that Supra.. It's probably not worth 'a fortune' but IT IS a properly cool car... Getting hold of another one probably quite difficult...!
Just a little thought dont forget to put a petrol sticker near the filler cap
Not a bad idea!
Thanks for showing that didn't know anything like that existed
Crazy isn't it. I keep looking at loads of parts and wanting to flock them!
I did watch the first version. I subscribed for the P6B and it looks like that road outside could park at least three more projects in the pipeline.

Great update, Any news on the MK1 Jag?
@christaylor3403 Unfortunately it's moved on to pastures new. After it being sat for a full year without me having the time to work on it due to other cars/projects etc I realised I wasn't in the best place to own the car, so sold it to a restorer who will do the car justice.
My Driving Instructor had one of these, same colour and same year. This looks to be a Coventry Registration, so could even be the same car. I only had two lessons b fore taking my test in my own car, so didn't get to drive the Viva much.
