Looks good 👍
Why is the circuit breaker after the switch?
Quirk or how it's wired with the two inputs. If it was before the switch I'd need two breakers. One for the Anderson in leg and one for the battery in leg.
Just curious when you’re using your air compressor does the air compressor speed up if you start your vehicle that is running off of? I replaced the compressor leads with a set of six gauge jumper cables that have a voltmeter built in them. If I run the compressor just off the battery it shows like 12 1/2 V but if I start the vehicle, the gauge shows 14 V and you can hear the compressor speed up. Is this a problem?
Totally normal. A fully charged 12v battery will have around 12.6 volts. Your alternator puts out around 14.4 volts. You can definitely hear the difference in how the compressor runs with the vehicle running versus not. You should always have the vehicle running for best performance if you can.
I assumed it was normal, I just wasn’t sure if the circuit board somehow regulated the volts to keep them at a constant 12 volts. I didn’t figure 14.5 volts would hurt anything but thought I would ask.
NIce box. Where did you get the on/off switch?
Amazon. Search for a on-off-on or SPDT switch
Great work and very informative
I’ve been watching several videos on adding the relay. Some things I have read and watched say that you want the relay on the hot lead instead of the ground side. I’ve tried wiring it this way, but I can’t figure out how to include the thermal protection wire into the mix. Any thoughts? Also since making this mod, have you used your compressor enough to actually have the thermal protection kick the compressor off?
I've done 3 Jeeps in a row all on 35s or 37s. It's never kicked in. I don't know how I would wire it with the relay on the hot side. Never bothered working it out because it was wired on the ground side from the factory.
Great video very clear, very informative and efficient, thank you !
Great video! Seems no simple project is always simple. Including problematic adds truth to your project. I am glad its not only my projects that are frustrating at times! Any reasonable way to add a fuse? Well done!
Since there wasn't a fuse on it to begin with, I didn't see a need to add one but you could put an inline fuse holder on the power wire coming up from the motor. Then wire it the same from there.
That's a very well thought out VHF/UHF Go Box. How do you charge your battery? Any reason you chose not to have a solar charge controller to charge the go box for extended operation? The 'shack-in-a-box' people have a great setup using an Icom 5100 and fits in the size of an Apache 3800 case.
I have an inline charge controller that has Andesron connectors on it and a folding solar panel. Plug the panel into the charge controller then plug the charger into the box. I have another video where I show a bunch of the Anderson accessories I've made and how you can mix and match for just about any situation.
Probably one of the most understandable videos for a non techie like me. 3 questions: how can you run 120 and is that the way you charge your battery? Have you hooked solar panels up to it? Thanks.....
I put Amderson connectors on everything. I have a small LifePo charger that plugs into the connectors on the box. I also have a small inline solar charge controller and a folding solar panel. Plug the solar panel into the controller then controller into the battery side of the connectors on the box. Since it takes pretty significant amperage to transmit, the battery will provide the juice needed for transmitting and either charger will charge the battery back up. Works pretty well.
Another American that CAN'T SHUT HIS MOUTH 6 minutes in and you're still waffling pure 💩 minimum talk maximum how to.
Thanks?
What size is the Catastrophe fuse in your box? The fuse that is at the POS post of the battery to protect the wire that carries the whole load of the box. In case a short were to happen. Looked like a lot of unfused wires between the battery and the breaker? It was hard to tell in this video. Lots of Good ideas you have.
Excellent thanks for your video, much appreciated.
I used the red sb 175 as well, and I mounted my plug in the bumper so I don’t need to open the hood. I also have an Anderson connector on both ends of my 20 foot cable because my other vehicles have Anderson plugs as well. I made a set of clamps on 3 foot wires in case I need a jump from a vehicle that doesn’t have the plug. One more thing I did, on one end of my 20 foot cables, I used a black connector because it will mate to any color sb 175. Having the plugs in the bumper is really handy especially if freezing rain left a layer of ice preventing you from opening the hood. Just plug in and hit the remote start.
I’m getting ready to mount my (similar) compressor in the rear of my JLU and run the wires in a similar fashion. I see you used an inline fuse that came with the kit. I’m trying to figure out if I should use a relay or a fuse on the positive cable. Thoughts?
I'd use the fuse regardless. If you only wanted the compressor to run when the vehicle was on, you could also add a relay that was triggered by an ignition hot source or a switch in the cab. I would wire it batt>fuse>relay>compressor.
i thought about getting one of those, but my plug is differnt. great idea
Excellent clear instructions.
Great demonstration.....Clear, concise and accurate. Just got my new JL, so this is a perfect tutorial....
is this an oillress compressor so i can mount it upside down?
Yes it's oil less. You can mount it any way you want.
Thanks for the handy info mate appreciate the effort put in
👍🏼
So I am currently in the process of wiring that badlands remote into a worn VR Evo 12. The difference being I cannot wire mine to the plug the way you did because it uses a microcontroller. So when I wire the receiver directly to the solenoid I keep poped my fuse. I was wondering if I am missing something, or if anyone could give me insight
Aloha, where did you get your 2" tubing? 73 Mahalo and Aloha
It is standard 2" square, 1/4" wall tubing. I had some left over from a other project but any steel supplier will have it.
So instead of having the one and off switch..could those two wires be used for a gang switch if long enough?
Great video man! I just got into the Anderson world recently. I’m doing an inverter and jumper cable setup. Got my China crimpers ready lol. Same ones you have. 👍
It's like a drug. Anderson all the things. 😂 You'll start to find all sorts of projects that can benefit from them.
Would perhaps adding some protection against over discharging the battery be a good idea? I know Milwaukee tools have this to prevent damaging the battery.
I thought the batteries had that circuitry built into them. If they do, they'll shut down on this the same way they do in a tool. Could be wrong though.
Why wire to the front cig port? Why not go all the way to the battery?
I have enough stuff at the battery as it is. I didn't need another connection there. I may do it in the future but the plug works just fine. I also have a 2 USB charge ports that I put in so I don't really need the outlet for anything else.
I’m in the process of doing this and maybe I missed it but I need to know what color is out and what color is in?
You guys did a tremendous job, well done! PS: may I add 2 suggestions: to increase the safety of the operation I would have added (1).[bonnets up] of the 3 recovery vehicles and added [safety blankets] to the winch ropes.
This is literally the exact same way I’m planning to do my own. It also makes no sense to me well companies at all the extra disconnecting air fittings onto the manifold it’s just extra bulk and one more place for it to fail. I really like that you added an air chuck to the end of one of the hose. this is something I’m planning on doing.
You have some nice features there sir. Any lessons learned or changes since the video? Thanks.
No changes. It has worked out really well. Just used it a couple weeks ago for comms at a bike race. My battery wasn't charged all the way and I had to switch to backup power. Having it set up like it is, it was as simple as just plugging into the other connector and flipping the switch.
@@IronsideAdventures801 Yeah, being able to select power sources from the switch is one of my favorite features I saw on the video. Definitely doing something similar. Thanks a bunch for sharing.
great build bravo!!
Have you seen the Thors lightning or M.O.A.B with the display and auto shut off once it reches desired pressure? It stops and checks the pressure while airing up just like an air pump at the gas station. Any thoughts on how to make a system like this?
I tried this and a bunch of sparks flew out and them my battery started on fire. I kept pushing the remote buttons but that o lay made it worse.
Cool
Great video, thanks! Thinking of doing the same mods to my compressor. How has that relay held up? I am thinking of mounting my compressor in the engine bay and am concerned about heat.
So far, no issues with mine or any that I've converted that I know of.
@@IronsideAdventures801 awesome, thank you!
No back seat club 🤘🦊🤘
If you wanted to just use 18v would you just need the buck converter? Do you still need grounds etc or just hot in hot out?
Anyone figure out what they used for the models that allow the user to select the PSI?
Old push button seatbelt would make a good latch
You're right. That is a great idea I'll have to keep in mind.
Nice work.
It always surprises me with how optimistic stuff like this is with wire size. Even if technically it can handle the amps people always forget about voltage drop. Good video, I bet that motor is happier with the larger wire. I've got some of those huge 4/0 anderson connectors on my big diy lithium pack for running the winch and inverter. I need to get one of these compressors soon and toy around with it. I tried the a/c compressor into air compressor mod but it was really difficult to filter out all the oil it kept puking up, even with multiple catch cans filled with steel wool and a recirculating drain back into the intake.
if anyone uses the hose and fittings linked in the description i would recommend using the small dremel sandpaper bits to make the area you feed the hose through slightly larger. it is an extremely tight fit if you dont and, while possible to get through, will take a lot of time for each one (upwards of an hour). using the dremel from the bottom, up until the threads start will make feeding the hose through much easier and is still a very tight fit
Fantastic video, thanks for making this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
No fuse needed with such a large amp draw on the battery?
You could add one to the vehicle side of your wiring system if you wanted. The wiring for this is similar to a winch though and there is rarely any type of fuse on a winch system.
The vast vast majority of jumper cables are copper coated aluminum and I see a lot of people using jumper cables on these. CCA is equivalent to a copper cable 3 or 4 AWG smaller….so using a 4AWG CCA isn’t an improvement to an 8AWG copper cable. And yes I saw that you realized the jumper cable conductor wasn’t actually 4 gauge. Just thought I’d add that in. The cable on the unit has to be pure copper otherwise it would not handle 90 amps any day of the week
This is good information. Thanks for adding it to the discussion. From your information, it sounds like if using good pure copper leads, you could do 8 ga. That also means my 6 ga cables are over sized. I'm good with that too.
