    I find the Apo-Summicron-M 50 to be extremely natural in its rendering, not clinical at all.

    Love this video, and completely agree with the view on capturing the ideas and things you want to capture as opposed to only chasing nice compositions. A wonderful reminder for anyone starting out in photography. Subscribed, and I think I might find myself coming back to this video a lot. I think a lot of it comes down to valuing your own work/product because it is your work and because it captures things you hold dear or think are important as opposed to only conforming or chasing an external validation of your work. But on the flip side with rising prices of film it’s hard to let yourself explore and not feel like you need a higher hit rate in every roll or that you are wasting film (and money) when you don’t capture something that is ‘nice’. Fully agreed that it is ultimately about finding your own voice and realising how you want to portray your view/perspective of the world.

      7:22 Would love to hear your thoughts on this communication aspect of things and taking into account the subjective experience/insight of the viewer because photos don’t exist in a bubble and as important as capturing your view is, it is almost equally important to understand how your view is perceived (the other side of the coin basically). Thanks for your content, this is brilliant and you have a great way of putting concepts and your ideas across.

    Your eloquent and beautiful description of the v2’s rendering (like tissue paper) really got me… but I have to say, I preferred the rendering with the reissue in nearly every image. Definitely on my must-have list now.

    That format-switching mechanism is such a Classic piece of Fuji engineering. (The X-pan is basically a Fuji camera). Kind of reminds me of the switching between EVF and optical viewfinder on the Fujifilm X-pro series. This was a really comprehensive review of the X-pan and the panoramic format, thank you. Sadly out of my price-range but I’ll happily get my 65x24 fix from my second-hand GFX 50s, which cost a lot less than an X-pan!

    Just seen this video after deciding to jump fully into fomapan 400 after trying a bunch of rolls on 35mm (and currently tryng Kentmere 400 on 120). Unfortunatly yes, I had the same issue with quality control of the film, having the same "lines" you show during the video.

    Got to say during the whole video I was rooting for A, its qualities closer to my photography. I really enjoyed the poetic nature of your review, one of the better lens comparisons I’ve seen. I love more that you finish with “keeping both”. It couldn’t be different. I’ve come to dislike reviews that glow on a lens only to end with a discard, a sold or a return. If were shooting these wonderful machines as a means to express ourselves, then it’s the only possible outcome. There are things only A can say, there are things only B. The challenge will be to pick which one is on the camera most of the time. 😊 Thanks.

    The choice is actually very easy. If you want a properly Leica lens with good build quality, buy the Pre-ASPH V2 because the build quality of the steel rim remake is not as good as a $500 Voigtlander. If you want filter compatibility, buy the steel rim reissues which has the standard 46mm filter thread while you will need to use the lens hood or third-party accessories for installing a filter with Pre-ASPH V2.. However, if filter compatibility is the priority, I would just buy the first 35mm summliux ASPH (pre-FLE) for the better build quality. I have briefly owned the steel rim reissue but ended up with returning it. I like the overall images but I just cannot stand the build quality. My copy was built after 06/2023 with slightly improved quality control but still have an aperture ring that wobbles slightly. The main reason I returned the lens is the focus ring which is stiff and non-linear. The infinity lock made it worse. I am totally OK with the infinity lock on my 35mm summicron 8 element as well as LLL's copy of the same lens. While whole focus mechanism on the 35mm summicron 8 element was so smooth, I don't think Leica knows how to make a smooth transition between the locked state and unlocked state anymore. Maybe I have a bad copy of steel rim remake but I don't think my impression is unique. And this is not my first time having issues with the modern built Leica lens. I tried a 35mm f1.4 FLE II in a Leica store and the aperture ring was kind of lose. Nowadays, I always do my research on the build quality of Leica lenses before I buy them or just simply avoid buying Leica lenses. Instead, all the Vogitlander lenses I have owned were built perfectly at a fraction of the cost.

    It’s crazy… I’m following a lot of film photographers and always enjoyed watching them. Like 3 days ago I found your channel and I can only say WOW! All other film photographers are amateurs compared to you. And I say this, even though I really do enjoy watching their videos. You’re just on an other level. Hope to see more vlog style videos. There’s just so much to learn from you. Would be great if you could do more videos of like how you meter, how you approach taking pictures, how do you develop and scan film, how do you edit it? Also orders my first 30.5m roll of fomapan 400.

    First off - as always, beautiful pics. The intra-roll aspect change is absolutely magnificent. Totally with you “remake, but 100% mechanical”. Best 2 reasons to not beat 9-years-ago-Jeremy up; the 1500-2000 you probably sold it for then got you tools you needed more at the time, and if it had bricked itself a year or two later you’d never have come back to it last year…

      Really enjoyed your 800T night time photos, not just because it's 800T.. and it's night time... but the compositions were just lovely. THEN we got part II, and maybe because you've warmed up, but I REALLY enjoyed the images from your Portra roll. The lone car at @5:06 is basically a given, but I love how well pano works for this image. Same for @5:30, visually so much more interesting, imo, than the image before it, and perfect for pano. Just absolutely wonderful, thank you for sharing. Looking forward to the full review.

  • @krisredgrave8484
    @krisredgrave8484 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

    IMHO, in my experience and some other tests, the best you can get with this (amazing) film is to shoot it at EI 320/250, I believe that in fact, it's a cubic (classic) grain formula rated at 200 but intended to shot at 400 or even 640/800, which is very impressive for a "cheapo" film, something similar happens with Delta 3200 and TMAX P3200, they are ISO 1000 and 800 respectively, but intended to be pushed. If you need a tabular (modern) cheap ISO 200 film, you can shoot Foma 200 and get a somewhat more "modern look", like a TMAX 400 rated at 200. I love this film for anything street or "vintage/decadent" looking photos (urbex, old things, portraits, etc), some people even says that sometimes looks like the old Tri-X from the 70's/80's decade (the real deal), not sure, but it's simply amazing. Rated at 800 you will have pretty much less dinamic range because of its "real" circa 200 ISO, but for gritty and grainy imagery it's an absolute win :)

    Can't tell you what a shock it is to bump into someone who knows what they're talking about, has serious miles on the film clock, talks articulately, communicates so well and is 'the real deal', as opposed to the huge population of film channels that are the polar opposite. Top stuff.

    Biggest issue with this lens isn't the hood, it's the 1 meter minimum focusing distance; for this reason alone, buy the v3 which doesn't suffer from this problem.
