Illume Connect interview with George Canfield, EDC Leather, teaching holster making and leatherwork
Savannah catches up with George Canfield at the Illume Studio to take a break from teaching classes and have a conversation about his passion for helping other leather workers pursue their passion.
We discussed George's journey in leatherwork, transitioning from making ren faire goods to gun leather and holster making. Today EDC leather is a production shop that does more than produce gun leather products, they have also become a resource for other makers to expand their own product lines by focusing on making them successful.
George also talks about some of the classes he is teaching that will be featured as online courses on the Illume platform for learning leather work with several more styles of holster designs. He spent the week in studio teaching the design and build of a shoulder holster, a three-piece holster and a few other classes focused on patterning for holster design.
Highlights:
04:21 Moving to Gun-leather
08:12 Holster making Patterns
08:35 Benefits of teaching to the leather community

I have never seen that Hook & awl Needle ( at16:03 minutes) I have looked on Weaver ahd Leather Wranglers and cannot find it... is there a specific name they use for it? I have had a repair, restoration, manufacturing & Piece work business since 2002 and this would speed things up a lot ... and yes Time is Money.. :) Great video .. good job! The Leather Lady, LLC (I have a TH-cam channel too) and love teaching as well. :)
Could I buy that pattern from y’all
It is part of the full course on learnwithillume.com Learn with Illume is a membership based learning platform for leather work. Currently their are some 85 projects available that are part of the $50/month subscription. New content is added weekly.
Well hell I can't see anything your doing
Matt has a couple drawing classes on our learning platform learnwithillume.com that may be of interest in addition to a belt tooling series which currently has 8 different patterns. Our video process has been updated since some of the earlier videos. Thank you for your comment.
This is Jerry Baker I am looking forward to more video content, live chats from illume. When I first saw illume in my email I throw it into my spam and forgot that Shop Talk had changed to illume. I sent an email and called to say I made a big mistake.
Graham Ebner Boots are fantastic
Great teaching , thank you
What is it with Midwestern Leather workers and tornadoes? I feel like it's a right of passage, you aren't a real leather worker until you've driven through one.
That saddle was so dirty that in a first thothgt that it was only the saddle tree😂
Hi Sr, I would like that you recommend me a nice set of tools to buy for my fathers birthday he is a craftman too and he lives in Cuba and those kind of tools dont exist there, and I like to buy a good decent set of draw tools to give him as gift, thank you in advance.
What snap did you choose?
A segma snap
or glove snaps
Quite a simple yet really cool project thank you
Personally I skip the micron paper films and would just go to the mop with a final finishing paste or polishing compound on the mop. So 1000 or 2000 grit to mop job done without extra honing on these expensive and easily damaged papers.
That was the most beautiful and best embossed work I have ever seen. What leather do you use?
I like a slightly convex grind, tapering from well into the blade, say two inches, out to the edge. Coupled with a good proper strop, with aggressive grit, one is good to go. Mostly use 6 to 7 inch knives, with the tapered ferrule on the handle.
Wish you had a better camera angle so we could see
I'm having a really hard time finding a saddle with a short enough horn ... Is there a way to shorten them if they aren't metal?
Matt said, "No. You need to talk to the tree maker to get a tree built with your specs on horn measurements."
You ma'am are a true artist/craftswoman ! i cant keep my man fingernails out of the leather however you keep your sculped nails clear of the leather and just lay down magnificent work. thank you for sharing your work.
Man, talk about distracting! Soooo many guys im seeing lately in hats that look like they're wearing them BACKWARDS, DUDE!!! WTH!
Excellent work! How long have you been carving leather? I've never seen the stackable seeds like that before, I really like it.
Felicitaciones gran trabajó👍👍👍
Fantastic job , great tutorial.
Nice work. Thank you for your tips and tricks. Where can someone get the pattern you used?
I enjoyed listening to my old friend.
Two of my most favorite leather artist together!! WoW!!! Thankyou! Great .. conversation! 👍🏻
Brilliant insight from years of experience and knowledge.
These guys are so inspiring! 😃
Very nice!
Aaron and Janie Sue are some of the best people on the planet. I served with Aaron in GTMO and he was dedicated to learning his trade. It’s an honor to know him and her and see what they do for the community.
Its getting expensive to keep the lights on. I had to raise my prices. I'm getting more saddles in for tear down, clean, and oil than I can handle, and I'm charging $200. Nobody says "no," so I imagine I could probably charge more if I was interested. Re-shears are $250, but I don't use a sewing machine for much of anything if I'm doing repairs. How do feel about repairs on old fiberglass trees? I'm not sure how much I trust them, and I don't want to repair something that might hurt someone, or worse, the horse.
We reached out to Matt and he sent us this, "I feel your pain, if I see something that I feel like is a danger or going to cause a problem I'm just brutally honest with the customer and won’t work on it. If you feel a need to I would probably have them sign some sort of waiver or maybe ask your insurance agent if you're covered."
your awl from leather wranglers... what are the size and blade length that you think works best?
1.75" is the length of my awl. The width is the same no matter what length you order from Leather Wrangler
Saludos👍👍👍
Beautiful !
Your method for cutting the hand-hole allowed me to produce a hand hole cut that I actually like for the first time. Thank you very much!
What I’ve done is epoxy and rivet a wooden filler piece to the top of the metal horn and that way I have something I can nail the leather too before putting my top piece on
Watched the whole video, paying close attention to each syllable. Noticed that you mentioned several shows but no mention of the two Texas shows that I've bought from Barry at,... Waco and Wichita Falls (about a Grand worth, 2 times each). Wyoming, Montana, Arizona and Colorado was talked about so my question is, is Texas not worthy of mention? Sorry to be so sensitive, but I've noticed that Texas based leather folks seem to be held in lower esteem amongst the suppliers, manufacturers, trainers, artists and makers that we can only hope to equal some day.
Waco and Wichita Falls are amazing shows and we certainly didn't mean to leave those out. This was recorded early in the year and I think we just weren't thinking that far ahead to the shows that come later in the year. We love connecting with our friends in Texas. Some of the most talented leather craftsman are found in your great state and we look forward to being in Wichita Falls and Waco every year. I don't know how to address your second comment but appreciate you bringing it up here.
Another quick note, our monthly magazine features esteemed Texas craftsmen that we rave over. If you contact Savannah savannah@burns1876.com , she'd like to set you up with a complimentary 3 month subscription if you are interested. Thanks again for your comments.
@@connectwithillume Thanks for the offer, but no. I know I was just being overly sensitive and don't want to take advantage of you or your generosity. We Texans are often rightly accused of being braggadocious in the first place, so it takes us by surprise when not mentioned in yet another important video. We continually hear all about the history, people and styles from the Northwest but would like the leatherwork contributions emanating from Texas to be highlighted a little more (if you agree). Love your efforts for all of us, thank you!
Thank you for this and all the episodes. Great advice from all
Mr. King has a lot of sample patterns that highlight different ideas for stamping at the shows.
Barry makes the finest leather working tools around. Leathercraft is a very challenging craft. I love the fact the experienced crafters want to share their knowledge. I took classes at the Waco show it was a great experience.
anybody know why he put his long piece under the short piece?
Great content, thanks for sharing.
Great and fun interview. Love the Heizers and everything they bring to the leatherheads of the world.
Good hearing you all see you in Prescott
Great episode and Mr and Mrs at makers have a great store. thank you for interviewing them
Thank you for the kind words
They make good door stops too, lol.
The Daisy brand stainless steel bb’s are heavier if you prefer more weight than copper. I used a blue jeans back pocket and just folded it in half and glued it to make mine. Springfield Leather has one they call Dead Weight for about $12.00.
Couldn't really see how you were really using the tools. But other than that every thing looks good beautiful simple and you did it in mater od a few minutes. 😊 good job.❤
This mans bent straight edge is a testoment to his his ability ! a great craftsman that knows how to do it . Thank you sir for sharing
👍👍👍
