Hard Cruise Racing is more than a race team, we REALLY enjoy our toys. Boats, Bikes, Classics, Imports, Trucks and more. With a passion for customs and racing, if there's a style you want to see, it's here.
ep 2 - Rear Tire Conversion - Budget Flattrack Racer.
Who doesn't love a garage built, backyard, super low budget race project.
I do
I'm all about it.
This is our 1983 Suzuki 550. I had gotten the bike for FREE through a series of trades, essentially picking a free snow blower from an older lady who simply couldn't so it herself anymore. So for payment for helping clean some other stuff we picked that up. I rebuilt it, cleaned it up, and got it running. I then traded it for this bike non-running.
A couple months ago we got word of a flat track race locally that was being very lax with their ruling and what they would let run, and decided WHY NOT.
I have this bike sitting in the weeds, no real set plan, so let's build a race bike.
Now I'm not delusional here. I know that throwing together a bike from the weeds won't compete with the purpose built bikes. And the fact I've never raced flat track means I won't be at the front of the pack anyhow.
What this is, is a way to experience the sport and a curiosity if anyone, you, a friend, literally anyone could get into the sport at a major budget.
When I finish the series, I'm going to put a video together talking about the budget. How much we spent, how much your need to spend, and so on.
This episode really focused on the struggles and stresses I dealt with to convert a front 19" tires to be used on a rear.
WHY
The ruling for this event and most flat track and dirt oval events is a limitation on tires. And a few other things like no lights. But the big one is tires.
We have to run a trials or flat track specific tire. I decided to go with flat track tires since the upper racers in the sport are often open to giving away free tires to lower builds and racers to help support them. We see this in our truck racing as well.
That's when I found out flat track tires mainly come in 19" our front is a 19 but the rear was not. Looking up options i seen a lot about buying special flat track rear wheels which come with swappable sprockets and all that. A GREAT option if you race the sport, but not something I was looking at doing right now not knowing if I even like the sport with the high price tag.
I took my front wheel off and realized they have bolt patterns on both sides, since some of these bikes come with dual front calipers.
WIN
it took me a bit to hunt down a spare front from a similar bike, and had to spend a day driving to pick it up. But I got it.
This led to my next issue. No one would supply or build a spacer in a reasonable time or budget. I tried to find blank week spacers to just drill myself, but not an option.
I decided to go a sketchy route using individual spacers. I feel it's risky since I won't have the resistance to twist and side load, but I'm hoping the bearings take care of a lot of that and it just holds on.
Might not. It's a risk.
I also go through measuring and ordering bearings. It's a good skill to learn. I just ordered some fuel tank bushings the same way, taking an ID and OD measurement with a cheapo meter from @harborfreight
Keep in mind
This is about budget friendly and availability.
My videos are long. They are very descriptive showing the thought process and so on. I want you to be able to build your project, this is about education. About learning. About what you can do. You got this.

ep 1 - Vintage Flat Track Build
มุมมอง 51หลายเดือนก่อน
From a street bike bobber project to a flat track racer. I don't know what to call this bike at this point, so let me tell the story. I love racing, but my passion for rally and asphalt hillclimbs like pikes peak mean my passion is kind of inaccessible at this time. I'm a disabled vet. I hurt. So the idea of driving for a week to race and driving a week home just isn't happening with my current...
Re-tune and test - cafe racer
มุมมอง 28หลายเดือนก่อน
Well. It left me stranded, so I guess we'll tune it again. The other day I made a video going through the tuning process on my bike. In that video I made a mistake, I didn't tighten down the locking nuts when vacuum synching the carbs, which allowed the nuts to spin from the vibration over time and eventually the bike started running rough and shut down on me. At the time I was only 1/2 mile or...

Toggles, Dimmers, and more. How Do They Work?
That winch like my baaaack 😂. Nice stance tho definitely different 👌🏾 Ohio representing 🤟🏾
Thanks. It's really too damn low. I think I'm gonna remove the side skirts. At least for now and see if I like how it looks. When I was unloading it, the sideskirt clipped the edge of the trailer and crinkled it 🤦♂️
What’s the bolt size
M8 1.25 x60
I have a tubo coupe, I hate OBD1 fuel injection and I have a Weiand 4BBl Intake and cheapo headers.... Do I really need to change the heads to make a non-turbo work on that 88' lima engine?
The intake and exhaust bolt patterns and port patterns are different. So I thought about running the 8 plug head, plug the 4 on the intake side, and run it so I had s roller cam. But it simply wouldn't bolt up with my header or intake. And for the series I run I had to run a 2brl carb.
@@HCRacing Good to know, thanks for the info.
Same here bro.
@kuhlharrald2808 like no matter how I eat em, I feel like it's wrong 🤣
Love the energy this guy has! Crazy this doesn’t have more engagement.
Thanks. I appreciate that. It's rough making educational content, but it's all good. If someone gets to build their dreams and puts a smile on their face at the end of the day, that's what it's all about.
I have been using mine for 6 months now. Today, suddenly, there is no power. The light comes on, dims, then comes back, dims, etc. The cords are fine. Checked connections. Fine. Switched to a different outlet. Same thing. I have no idea why it will not sew today. Seems to have insufficient power. Thanks!!!
Are you able to easily turn the machine by hand? You can have the same effect if the electric motor is trying to spin. But it can't. Some machines, and I would have to look at mine to confirm, have a safety where if something goes out of line it will trigger a safety. Something that stops the machine from working to protect itself. So you may have to reset the machine.
Holy guacamole it sounds so healthy 😮😮
For a bike that's sat for who knows how long, it has life.
You're going to make the ladies jealous with your sewing trailer.
@@nmjerry 🤣🤣
At least you are smart enough to not go around the gates.
By the way this is a 1970 Honda CB750K1 cafe racer.

Thanks for this! Just purchased 2024 BS Badlands and will be picking it up next week. Swapping the Falken tires out for BFG 02's that I just had put on my '06 Explorer before I fell in love with the BS. Coming from a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe, and being an older person, your video was really helpful. I am intimidated by all the new tech but will have fun learning I'm sure. Will watch some of your other videos for driving tips too. Thanks again!
Just remember, new tech is doing the same things as the old tech, just more monitoring and easier ways to read what's going on. Like think window motors. An electric motor does the same thing as a hand crank. Just adding the ease of use.
@@HCRacing Hi! Well I'm not too familiar with old tech either. In fact, the Bronc will be the first vehicle I've ever had that doesn't have an ashtray. Ha! Don't need one anymore anyway. I am really looking forward to learning though. Will be ordering the floor mats as you recommended too. Loving your videos, thanks from Michigan.
Started watching your vids because I just got the same Bronco Sport as you, and loved your honest opinion and think there so true. Then Started watching your other vids and it blows my mind how talented you are.. I could listen to your explain your work for hours!!!
Thanks. I really appreciate that. I've always wanted my channel to be a more "this is how you can do cool stuff too" over just showing what I'm doing. Some people love it. Some don't. 🤷♂️🤣
You bought it sounds like a you problem a lot cars today have 17” wheels
Like you said A lot of cars do. But we bought their offroad package with the goal to push it to its limits. And a brake caliper too large to drop wheel size while not offering an offroad tire doesn't help.
Would really like to talk to you about my 85 mustang dirt car. Just got it about 3 months ago got 3 races on it. And dont know anyone that's racing a rwd 4 banger and I'm struggling with it. Names Johnny Hubbird. I'm on fB and IG same name. I would really appreciate it. Thank you
I was on track.
Hells yeah. How was it? I was going to bring my bike but I'm having tuning issues, the issue being I forgot to tighten the lock screws on my quad carb and after 200 miles or so it went wack 🤦♂️🤣
@@HCRacing I had tuning issues as well. I did all day Friday practice... LOVE LOVE LOVE the track! But Friday the Autotune went whacky on me and I didn't get to race.
I'm definitely planning to come out next year, it looked like an amazing track to run.
35mm lift? that's like 1-1/12 inches! you sure those numbers are right?
I can double check but also keep in mind I'm measuring the entire lobe, bottom to top. Just as a comparison cam to cam. So technically lift you would have subtract it from your the lobe width, or the lobe depth while not activating the valve.
I relate so much
Great idea! If you use a little bit of soap in the water, it may let the razor slide even easier.
Great idea.
1960 Ford. Custom 300 I think. Would look cool fixed up. And you need to trade it for a lawn mower.
1960 Ford Fairlane. But yeah. We don't mow the back 1.5 acre grow then harvest to feed our animals through winter.
I love the gloss
Gloss?
I thought I was the only one that had this problem
One day we'll be those old timers with the projects with the weeds through the top saying "now I can't sell that. Ima build it one of these days"
Man go to work. I don't know the last time I saw one of these fords🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yeah they're a rarity. This one's a 1960 Fairlane. It's a 1 year production space age car.
You need a crossword puzzle bro....
See. Now I'm not very great with big words. Crossword puzzles piss me off lol
@@HCRacing Sorry man.... Just a thought 😂👍

So true. So So true
Give up quit it's not worth it waste of time 😮 get a weed eater first
Nah. We have a homestead. We let certain areas of the property to overgrow to be harvested for our sheep, rabbits, and other animals.
Mw tooo....
It's a rough internal fight
Emotional capacity? Depression is for the rich lol!
Well shit. And here I was fighting those demons with moths flying from my wallet. I guess I'm that's not allowed lol
@@HCRacing they don't want your money anyway-get to it! It'll make a fine ride.
You need a project lawn mower chief
Nah lol we have a homestead with sheep and rabbits and so on. So we let it all grow and feed fresh cuts through the summer. Then cut it and store it for hay through the winter.
LMAOO
@@HCRacing hay and grass/dried grass are NOT the same thing and if you feed dried grass as replacement for hay your animals will get sick. I don't know much about farming and such but that I do know for a fact.
My yard isn't exactly grass. We plant and enrich our rear 1.5 acres to be a more enriched feed closer to a hay, while still feeding an 18% protein pellet for our smaller animals (like our rabbits), and add a range of produce scraps like fruits and veggies and grains on top. But yeah. Our fresh cuts are a lot of alfalfa and clove and so on.
Yup😶
We'll get there someday. Today just ain't that day.
Edsel ?
1960 ford Fairlane. They're a 1 year production and Edsels version is VERY similar. Check out the 1960 Ford Fairlane owner/Enthusiasts page on FB, I run that, a lot of good info and pics there
Me too 😢
She'll just have to sit there a bit longer till we have that motivation
The dodge dually has 17 inches wheels, my neighbor has 17 inches rims on his Silverado, new full size bronco has 17 inches wheels.
Well remember. This video came out 2 years before the release of the full size. And prior to ford releasing other sizes for the sport which still aren't an option on the Bandlands because of brake size. But yes. I understand 17s exist. It doesn't change that companies aren't producing a reasonable 17 offroad tire. We use our bronco sport for Search and Rescue and emergency response operations. A deep and durable tread is kinda big for our needs when driving through tornado damage and so on. We're going on set 3 within just 75k miles because the only options are a road tire and we are exceeding their use limitations.
How much are u invested in the 2.3l
We started with a blown engine that came in the race truck roller. Which we pulled the head and headers off. Other than that about $350 into the junkyard engine, seals, paint, and oils to do a cleanup.
How is your Bronco badlands doing now 3 years later, Any issues with it?
No major issues. A few things have been minor irritations such as the radio screen cutting out and needs reset. And the steering wheel is starting to de-laminate a bit. I feel these issues are happening WAY too early but that could be an issue across modern cars. I'm not sure. But no major issues.
@@HCRacing I Am a Ford guy myself, my brother is a MDT at Toyota, and he has worked on everything, he has said little things like electrical problems and delamination with the interior of the vehicle, those things tend to be more common in Ford's (or really any American cars in general) based on what my brother said, Ford's also tend to be a little rougher of a ride and squeaky noises start to develop in Ford's almost like it's rattling apart (even though it isn't) however none of these problems are of major concern just like you said.
I haven't seen that. I have back issues from the military so comfort was big for me. We had rented a jeep compass trail hawk to drive from Ohio to Cali. There were a lot of things I complained about like uphill performance and comfort. I found the sport, especially with the their turbo setup. It runs smooth and has been quite comfortable.
@@HCRacing Oh I agree Ford's are comfortable, I also have back problems and digestive problems, and my f150 I had was the most comfortable vehicle I drove, Ford definitely makes comfortable vehicles, but just might have noises develop from materials delaminating and they can only be heard from going over rough terrain. Nothing serious about Ford's, I personally think Ford's are the most reliable and most capable American vehicles. And also from reviews including what my brother says even working with Toyota says that Ford has the best technology for American cars handling wise.
My big thing price. For what we paid for a Badlands, we couldn't even get into a base model Toyota.
That stuff works pretty good. Had an old radiator off of an old cat power unit that was caked up with tar looking oil from years of buildup. And that stuff worked it's way through it. A puddy knife and a pressure washer helped it out, but that degreaser worked overtime.
I wish I knew about it earlier. Definitely going to try it on the race truck. The additives they put on dirt tracks causes a pain to wash off some surfaces.
Sounds great and looks great
Hey im ohio also! Cincy area. Nice work on it. I got a couple g bodies im working on now.
Hells yeah. Ohio is really a good place to be. I hated it when I was a kid, then moved around coast to coast. But man the fact I can hit like 6 cities in 1.5 hr drive is a damn blessing.
Came here from youtube shorts! I want to see your ideas about how you're going to make the hauler bed in the next video! Great work
Happy to know others found interest in the project. It will be a unique one. But the end goal is making it look like it could have come from the factory as an upgrade.
in a few years: guys ask your veterans before you fly drones
No one said you need to ask anything. I'm a veteran with triggers from when I was in. I'm fine with fireworks, but a firework followed by someone screaming set me off. Luckily my wife was able to reach over and pull my attention and ask if I was alright. Sometimes it just takes a split second to change the outcome of a situation. So instead of being insensitive to the people who sacrificed their peace of mind so you didn't have to, maybe invite your neighbor to watch the fireworks so they aren't alone.
Idk
Yeah it's a hard choice.
I'm in the middle of a similar project and really look forward to your videos. Your style is very soothing and confidence building. Bring them on, it should be a great project. Subscribed.
Thanks for the sub. It really helps. I'm excited to see where this build ends up, and super excited to make it something we can really enjoy.
If you put one of those green scratch pads on a palm sander, it might make it easier. We use palm sanders with steel wool to clean glass in glass factories because it doesn't scratch the glass.
That's a great idea.
I mean yeah.. that engine weighs what like 600lbs at most and those straps are rated for like 2-4 tons 😂😂yeah bud I don’t think you’re even close to the limit with those bad boys you could lift 2 or 3of those motors at the same time with those straps
I'm not worried about the weight, I'm worried about the fact the straps are just wrapped around the engine and not really attached. So they slip a bit and caused the engine to spin as it got lifted out.
Sketch? Yeah, sketching a masterpiece
That's scarey 😮
I swap duramaxs into suburbans for a living and that’s how we hold the trans level when sitting it in 😂
It works great for adding tension. It's when you need to let a bit off that it becomes the issue 🤣🤣
Haha. I used them , great for getting the angle..
It's just those loosening adjustments that become the issues lol
