Modifying my Lathes Quick Change Tool Post
Join me in this video as I modify my existing quick change tool post and machine in a second dovetail. When I first machined this tool post I over looked how easy it would make lathe work when it comes to using a boring bar. So this additional dovetail will help with this problem.

Nice video. I have essentially the same lathe, but branded Vevor, sold in the USA painted white. I just sent an email to warco to see if they will sell/ship to the USA as this is the easiest instal I have seen for this little lathe. Thanks for the info!

  • @mervynprice7009

I would draw issue with you. A Mini-Lathe often referred to as 7 by 12, 7 by 14 or these days even 7 by 15 is a light lathe weighing in 12 centres around 37Kg The Warco WM-180 is an ultra short bed version of a full size model engineer's lathe weighing 60kg. Please do not try saying to me that it has a 90mm (3 1/2") centre height. The most popular Model Engineer lathe as made by Myford has a 3 1/2" centre height with a gap bed. I own one. So with all due respect, please do not equate your WM-180 with the far narrower bed true mini-lathes. It just isn't one of these machines. It is a far better lathe to start with. Not as good as an ML7-R or Super 7, both of which have a true precision front bearing as used on the best toolroom lathes. But then, a new Super 7 costs a lot more than the WM-180 & you only get what you pay for or are prepared to re-build using your own skill & money.

I have got one of these on order - originally tried to get a used one like you but they where all either badly worn or expensive so ended up biting the bullet and investing in a new one from Colchester, it cost a small fortune but will hopefully last me a lifetime, I did consider a Master or a Triumph but they would have just taken up a bit too much room in the garage and obviously cost more! - Can’t wait for it to arrive!!

"what a lovely surface finish that is" Sorry, but it's not a great finish. As you do more grinding, you'll begin to see the defects. I think most of the problem here is aggressive cuts and large step over. Don't worry, you'll figure it out. Neat little machine.

Very good video. My question is how do I wire another switch in to change direction of the motor? I want to use a DPDT center off 6 pole momentary switch to change the direction of the motor. The two wires that are connected to the center 2 posts of this switch are the ones that get reversed depending on which way you move switch. Which two wires would I hook to these center posts that would control the direction of the motor?

I suggest adding 20% to the budget and purchase the hardened races that are normally available with thrust bearings. If you were able to part off the steel used for your DIY washers they weren't hard enough and will deform under load.

Another quick way to check if the wires are a pair is if you hold two of them together and can spin the motor if the motor is tougher to turn when there touching. Saves having to bust out the ohm meter

Surely the force on the leadscrew will be on the inner face when the vice is tightened? I've got a Vevor vice on my mill and to be fair, it was just fine out of the box. For the money, they are hard to beat. Very impressed with the quality of the grinding and the general flatness and tolerances when measured on my surface plate.
