- Join me in what is likely to be the largest but physically smallest projects on the Channel. So when it comes to Steam engines I can't say I'm a steam engine fanatic, but I can appreciate these were the start of things that led to where we are today.
Why then would I want to start a project steam engine build?
Well I think all the different components that go into making one of these will be a great way to test out all the equipment in the workshop and show the different setups/ skills needed to machine one of these fine engines.

On mine I drilled 8mm and fitted a brass bush rather than rely on the casting as a bearing. You don’t need to machine anything on the outside of the cross slides as it’s not a critical area. I also milled off all the fake bolt heads and dripped tapped for 7BA and put real bolts in. It looks much better.
Great idea with the bush insert I will definitely consider this as an essential upgrade once all is complete thank you.
In fact, it is the inside edges that need to be machined, as they are side bearing surfaces for the crosshead!

Did you dress the base of the casting on a surface plate on emery paper or similar so as maximise the surface before bolting it to the large steel block otherwise you could introduce warp in the casting even iron gives a bit. I made my first Stuart engine a 10v 44 years ago and it still runs today they are very good kits.

Hi Jon very good advise to prevent failure later on. I did roughly check it on my workbench but maybe it will be worth me spending a bit more time to get it completely flat.

Thanks Howder yeah they seem like a good kit to test your overall skills as a machinist so should be good fun.
On to my favourite type of build! Looking forward to seeing your progress. I have the same kit about 1/3 done.
