      You and me both I can’t wait to get stuck back in and start some projects. Loving the vids atm that vice looks sick and it’s cool to see how you hardened low carbon steel. All the best.

    The indicator you are using is a dial indicator, not a dial test indicator. A test indicator has a lever arm.

    Take lathe of the wood and rest on the concrete if it was laid correctly it should take the load the wood will move and give inconsistent levels depending on heat humidity and vibration.

    • @MachiningwithJoe
      @MachiningwithJoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jon your comment makes completely sense. I am going to see how it goes when I start running the machine and turning stock down again. As with everything around the lathe to remove the wood will be a right pain.

    Joe, Levelling a lathe proves nothing, you should be checking for twist and bow in the bed between the headstock and the tailstock and making sure the tailstock centre is along the spindle axis, you will only know this if you machine the diameter over say 12" and check for taper along its length, re the mill, you say rigidity is an issue if you shim one side, how do you know all four side are sat flat now without checking.

    • @MachiningwithJoe
      @MachiningwithJoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi campingstoveman what you say makes complete sense when it comes to the art of metrology when setting up machines I still have a long way to go and very much a newbie here. As for the mill I am just assuming the column is flat to the base but then again you know what they say about never assuming. Anyways thank you for your comments I will take it on board and do some test cuts over the next weeks.

    Unsubscribed for the following reasons.
    1. Jealous of your new workshop.
    2. See point 1.
    Really enjoyed your videos mate keep up the good work. Cheers

      Haha you had me worried at first Matt when I saw the top line. Hopefully you don’t unsubscribe when I do a full workshop show and tell videos ;)

    Everyone thinks they can do electrics. Doing and doing safely to the regs are two completely different things 🙂

      @MachiningwithJoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes this is true many things have been pointed out to me on the latest inspection of my installation. At least now I know what needs to be done and can act on it to achieve a safe workshop.

    The lathe is sat on a sheet of chipboard thus no matter how level you get it now it will, overtime, become out of level again, take the wood away!
    Also, why do you continually watch yourself while talking to the camera, it’s a tad weird!

    • @MachiningwithJoe
      @MachiningwithJoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Anon,
      Yeah I know what you mean it’s a habit I’m trying to get away from.
      I will have to see how much it sinks as if I can keep the wood to protect the concrete I will also I thought it might help spread the load a bit.
