Gold Size Terminology Explained! #gold #goldprospecting #goldpanning #goldnugget #prospecting
Gold sizing can definitely be debatable but I took some time and did some research noting what the general consensus says about gold size.
Let me know in the comments if I got it right or if I'm wrong, what do you classify each size being?
Thanks and Happy Prospecting!
Stoney
Flour Gold - Generally 30 mesh and smaller and resembles fine grains of sand or salt.
Flake Gold - Usually classifies as being between 8-30 mesh and would need tweezers to pick up. This size generally can't get picked up by your fingers.
Gold Pickers - Can for sure be picked up by your fingers and weigh up to 1 gram. Pickers resemble a grain of rice for a size comparison.
Gold Nuggets - Are what we as prospectors strive to find! These weigh over 1 gram and can be gigantic. Common sizes include buttons and marbles. Monsters and Lunkers are the Crown Jewels of gold and are once in a lifetime finds!

Ever Wonder How a Gold Pan Works? The Science of Panning & Techniques. Panning is Easy & Fun!
I found that same file on eBay and Amazon for $49.99 I don't know about this hundred dollar business
@@ShanonB-i7d hey Shanon! That's great! This was a few years ago during Covid and as you remember, everything was a bit more expensive. Thanks for letting me know you're finding it cheaper. That's a good price point, maybe a little cheaper would be better :)
Mine comes on OK, but doesn't come up to the right temperature. I tried calibrating it like the manual says, but I can't get the numbers up.
Hey Merlin! I hope you are well :) so I've heard another person on here say almost the same thing as you. It lights off but it's slow to rise or doesn't rise at all. It ended up being the igniter, even though it lights the gas off. The conclusion that we came to was that the regulator uses the current draw of the igniter to increase the gas amount or decrease it. Now is this your problem? Could be and if I were you, I'd try replacing it or swapping the igniter from the top position, which brings me to another question. Did you try and set the broil and see if your oven heats up to the desired temp? I'd try that and see what happens and my apologies if this doesn't help but I think you're on the right track. I'd almost put money on the igniter being faulty but that's just my thought. Thanks for commenting and keep me in the loop if you can. This video has been valuable to other people and it's allowing them to do some research and correct the problems on their own :)
Awesome cheers. I put the pin in the wrong way!
I did too at first! Hahah! No worries man! Thanks!
Pretty awesome Stoney!
Thanks AAA! I hope you are doing well my friend :)
I think you need a good bit larger screen on top of your 1/4 screen to catch the bigger stones and get them out of the percolation process
Hey Regular Guy! Others had said the same thing and it make complete sense. Thanks for commenting and your support :)
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser your welcome, us genius types need to stick together brother 😎

Guys do not do this, pre mix your concrete, dont be a hack
@@mahmoudkhodr166 thanks Mahmoud for the comment. I agree that mixing the concrete is always preferred. Having said that, this method has actually been quite effective for me. My soil has so much moisture and that works well for my application. I have fence posts that are over 20 years old doing this exact method and they are solid as a rock, so much so that trees have fallin into the fences and the posts never budged an inch. And you probably already know this, but a lot of concrete today for fence posts are this way, just add water and no mixing. Anyhow, thanks again for commenting. I hope you have a great day 🤠
Put the chain brake on, it being level doesn't matter.
@@Dr_Monster thanks Dr Monster for commenting. As for your comment, having the chain brake on or off for me doesn't make a difference. Is there a reason by chance? Maybe reduce slipping or something? Also, I do agree that the chain doesn't need to be level, but you do want the sharpener and chain to be level relative to eachother so you produce I good filed surface. I've used this sharpener so many times and how STIHL wants you to use it, so it's worked out perfect every time. Please let me know what I'm doing wrong with fixes so I can correct my technique. Thanks again and I hope you have a great day :)
Thank you for this information. Super duper helpful 🫡
You got it! Thanks for reaching out and I'm super glad it helped! Thanks for the support!!!
I would do the experiment with a known amount of gold, and I would make the slurry vibrate about 20Hz.
I like both of your ideas! Can you explain the 20Hz level? Just curious why that specific frequency was requested. Intrigued :) Thanks my friend!!!
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser The reason I wrote 20 Hz is because gold resonates 14-about 20Hz, because it will resonate, it should clump in patterns that make it easy to see and easy to steer in a direction. Experimentation will find what frequency works best with the level of carat there is in the gold you mine, different amounts of different types of impurities in the gold will give different frequencies that will cause it to resonate.
@Anashadk that is so cool to know! Thank you for that. I love the science that applies and it helps me to understand. Really appreciate it! Thanks again for replying.
Very helpful. Mine quit also. I think the company should include a ground jumper and screw since they changed the design. Nice work!

any way its good for aluvium gold
@virgisst761 that would definitely be what I'd be after :) thanks for the comment and support!
Good looking out. The replacement for my model was 170 dollars. Forget that. Note for anyone with the NX60 models, the old igniter was glowing, but weakly. Theres a temp sensor that won’t let gas flow if the igniter does not get to temp. Might be the same on other models idk.
Dang Cody! That's crazy expensive. Almost worth buying a new appliance when it's that much. Much respect brother.
Great video. Thanks for going step by step. I have the same concerns with my dog and the slope in my yard. I’m building my fence just like you did. I appreciate the time you invested to create this for others!!!
Thanks Tommy Dean! I appreciate the comment and support. We love it, but most of all, our dog loves it! Good luck! It's actually fun to build :)
Hi. What is the original symptom? My machine turns on, I select any cycle, I press start and it does not fill with water, it does not turn on the water pumps, I just hear a noise from the motor that you replaced. Thanks
Hey Alfredo! Thanks for coming by. So my original symptom is the water wall just not moving but the motor turns or more like grinds. When you dummy it out, I'm not sure if water should flow, but you should definitely hear a sucking action because the drain pump turns on which gets rid of any residual water. Hope that helps my friend :)
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser thanks
I am looking at this same model and you made assembly instructions easy to follow. Thanks so much and have a blessed day.

Bought one and it's garbage 🗑
Dang Kelly! I'm sorry bro. I think that tool works amazing and it's saved me so much money, but I get it. Some like em and some don't. Do you just straight file them then or have a service center sharpen them? Thanks for commenting though. I appreciate it.
@StoneyCreekSparkchaser the file sits the same level as the flat steel. It should be lower.
I gotcha brother. To be honest, if that's the way it is, I never noticed it before. I don't get squat from STIHL so it's all good man. Take that thing and chuck it as far as you can!!! lol. That's what I'd do of I didn't like something! Much respect dude :)
@StoneyCreekSparkchaser I showed the store that I bought it from and they couldn't understand why it's like that . I told them to take them off the shelves lol

Wow, you are lucky to have some Au so close!
Indeed I am FireChicken! I love it here and I'm always down there. Gold or not :) Great seeing you here!
What about tying off your post to some stakes in the ground, once you find the level. Would hate it to shift on you. Looks good
What's up Rap Tales? That's definitely the preferred method and I did that for my posts when I started, but as I was going, I noticed that the concrete was actually setting up really quickly and by the time I was done getting it level, it was basically in place and not moving. But like I said, that's how I did it and I had no problems but also know that some will anchor the post regardless which is totally fine :) I super appreciate the comment and support my friend! I'll check you later!
@StoneyCreekSparkchaser cool man, well I like the paint you applied.. where did you get that
@RapTalesRewind the asphalt paint I got from Home Depot. It's called Henry's, and the stain is just a dark stain from there as well. The asphalt really helps to slow down to rotting process, even though it's pressure treated... it'll rot eventually so this will hold it off. Thanks dude :)
Thanks for this video. My jack is the same model, but it must be a later version. My circuit board was potted with resin. My switch and light were fine, but the up position of the switch failed intermittently. It was apparent that water got in as you described. There was a coating of green corrosion on top of the resin potting. That corrosion was apparently causing a short between terminals. I cleaned the circuit board and all is well again. I added some silicone under the rubber plug to keep water out in the future. I should only need to remove the plug in an emergency and I am less likely to have an emergency if the jack is sealed. Thank you.
Awesome Brian! Thank you for the update on your situation. I ended up having to replace the whole thing here recently. The water damage in the work gear got to be too much and rusted shut. Locally it's super easy to replace but having said that, I'm glad you were able to fix yours! Thanks again for the comment and support :)
Are there are there any better pocket slices that I’ve come to the market over the years price range around $50?
Joseph, I'm glad you asked. If you go over to dream mat (prospectorsdream.com) and type in pocket sluice. You will find that you can get a mini pocket sluice that I gaurentee will knock those other two out of the water. And it's 12 bucks. You can also use my discount code of JC$5 and save yourself $5 bucks on top of it. For that price, you really can't go wrong and it will catch gold but you can't run a lot through it. You can however, upgrade to the next size. Just type in 4x16 adventure sluice and for under $40 bucks you are in business with a much bigger sluice where you can do some testing with. I hope this helps and I'm so sure of dream mat. It's all I use and I get my best cleanups versus the other guys. But you do you and I wish you the best of luck out there. I hope your pans are full of gold!
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser thank you very much
You got it dude :)
Use multiple buckets with larger to smaller hole size to classify to smallest without cloging a single bucket with just 1/8 inch holes
Hey Jason! I think you're right. Others said the same as you and I'll definitely work on that. I'm trying to come up with a better system, so anything ideas are welcomed! Thanks again for the comment and support!
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser just had a thought, if someone doesn't have an air source then a water pump like one used for a high banker would work real well.
@jasonthomashorn4794 another great idea Jason! Yes I think that would work really well :)
I think, with only a 2 inch chamber between the buckets, there's not enough space for agitation. The space is going to fill with material quickly. Try a 7 gallon bucket for the base. A 5 gallon for the 1/8 inch, and a 3 gallon for the 1/4 inch.
Hey Eyeslo! I think you are the second person stating to use a 7 gallon bucket. I really like that idea. I also like your other bucket ideas with the different layers of classification. I think that could definitely work to my advantage. I really appreciate the comment and support my friend :)
How are the pvc fence post sleeves holding up? I'm concerned they wont survive after a few canadian winters
Hey Jack! Great question. So I live in the PNW, Washington and we have very wet winters, but pretty mild. As for them holding up. I've had no issues at all but that's just me. You could however not use the pvc sleeves. You could just bury some wood in a box shape and that could do, that way if it rots out, you can just replace it. I'm sure there's other ways as well and hopefully this idea can just get you going so whatever conditions you have, it could work. I hope this helps Jack and I appreciate the question and support!
But what about ocean beaches or state parks like Cape Disappointment. Just want to pan some of that Sept 2024.
Hey H! Thanks for the question and if you look up the rule book (gold and fish) for beach rules they are pretty easy to decipher for beach prospecting. Specifically for cape D, you'll have to look up their rules for prospecting. Having said that. I've heard of people panning for gold on the beach there no problem, but like I said. You have to check the rules. As for gold being at cape D, there is gold there but from friends that have gone there recently, they have said that it got worked hard in the past and that a storm may have buried it some, so you might find it difficult to find any gold in larger quantities. Anyhow, good luck out there and I hope you have fun. I know if I were going there, I'd bring a pan and just go for it. Have fun!
looking at this idea there are 12v and up portable air pump ..like air mattress, and even a 20v Mellif duster.. i I I found this..Quick-Fill® AC Electric Air Pump - 38.9 CFM ....depending how much air ya need to push the fill around that might do the trick and im sure there is higher rating pumps..If your at base camp then its a different setup .for the back country this could work.Peace looks like others have the same idea lol...
For sure Mike! There are definitely options. I'll look into to some of those as well! Really appreciate it!
I have a question for you concerning a 33 foot toy hauler with a generator stand behind the propane tanks! I would like to run power from my generator and tie it into power supply under the bed up front instead of running a 35 foot power supply cord to the rear of the trailer! Any thoughts on where I should tie into up front there is a solar controller in storage compartment with access from the side door!!!?
Hey Brian! Sorry this is late. The idea you have actually sounds pretty good. I'd run it wherever you think works best to be honest. I'm not familiar with what you hauler you have but I've known some people who do exactly what you are thinking. They leave the back hook up, but have one more forward for more options. Just make sure you get the correct size wire and you should be good to go. Sound like a fun project. Good luck Brian and let me know how it goes if you remember :)
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser thanks for getting back to me with your answer I have 20 feet of 30 amp wire from a job site that I will use so I will add a junction box and hopefully I can tie in near the solar controller to make a nice place to mount! I appreciate your input and I will keep you updated thanks so much!
Id wrap with plastic with cloth and glue and then concrete over it to make it stronger
Great idea. That would definitely keep it in the ground better, but I've had no issues with it coming up. Super appreciate the comment and support my friend! Rock on! lol... at a Metallica concert tonight 🤟
@StoneyCreekSparkchaser nice. Metallica is always a great time. Fantastic idea i think youre on to something with this idea maybe make your own ground mold and sell them. Brillant.
Great video. You made my day! Thanks brother!
Thanks my man! Glad to help! Have a great Labor Day Weekend!
maybe miners moss at the top to catch spill over ..seams like you might loose the lighter stuff as its bubbling over...just a thought...
Definitely not wrong in that aspect. I want to do a controlled experiment where I run this is a tub and with the stuff that comes out, I want to pan and see if there is any gold in it. It would be a good indicator of what's coming out. Hmm... 🤔
how to make it portable ???..peace
That's the thing moustache Mike? Maybe a battery powered one? I know it's basically impractical but I was just experimenting around and trying to make classifying easier. Yea classifying isn't hard, but after a few buckets, I'm pretty much over it. I'm still playing with this design and a lot of people have me some advice, so once it's "perfected" I'll post another updated video. I still think it has promise. We'll just have to see. Thanks for commenting and the support! I really appreciate it!
Nice video. I would have measured to leave 1/4" or so thread exposed on the anchors after the initial tightening as the cable will stretch a bit and the posts may move a bit with time causing the need for re-tightening. I used bare stainless cable (quicker, easier and cheaper) not knowing if the plastic jacket will dry out & crack in sunlight over time. I'd also spend the $$s and use a hydraulic crimper with proper dies, worried about crimping with a cutter causing cracks/stress points on the anchors. Looks good though.
Hey Richard! No doubt in your assessment. These cables do move over time and I've had to adjust here and there but overall, I have plenty of adjustment left in all of my strings. As for the crimper, yes, I should have spent the money or rented a tool to do that. It does look good though and I can't even see them anymore. We chose the black because of our design and the plastic sheeting has actually held up great. No cracking, discoloration or nothing. I think it being aircraft grade helps. It's definitely not a cheap product. Thank you so much for commenting and your support. I think if anything anyone can get out of this video is the jig. I think it's essential for a perfect install! Thanks again Richard!
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser Big 10-4 regarding the jig/template. Yours was very good. Can't imagine not using a simple one like I did or something better like you made.. I did shell out for a Muzata drill guide for 90- 45-30 degree hole drilling, but seems like you got along fine without one. Best wishes.

Great info fella I got one of these a couple months ago but you have shown the correct way to use it, also I can’t emphasise enough use two gloves when doing this, one slip and you’ll slash yourself “hopefully not” 🇦🇺🤙
Thanks Alan and I couldn't agree more with the gloves... it just takes one slip. Thanks for the comment and support. I really dig it :)
Not bad! It's one of the first things I check in a new area. I too am from WA sate, on the West side (Bellingham area). Cheers!
Nice Denny! Olympia area for Me so south a bit from you... any luck with good gold up your way? I have good days, mediocre days and horrible days... but that's prospecting :)
@@StoneyCreekSparkchaser Yep, same up here! It's all about the fun of it all. There's decent gold in certain areas, if you work hard enough. South fork of the Nooksack is usually a good spot, but pretty worked. Always a good time though!
Hi do you know if this works with a samsung model nx58h9500ws please let me know thanks
Hey there. I really have no idea. Try and input that model number in Amazon and see if the igniter I provided in the video is a suitable substitute. From doing some of my own Amazon research, it looks like the one I have will not work. But please type in Samsung, then your model number and then oven igniter. It looks like a few of the people selling them on Amazon has a contact us and you can give them your model number and they can look it up for you. Hope this helps and good luck.
Washington is a joke
I know, and unfortunately other states are following.
This video was fantastic! Saved me hours!
Thank you so much Drake! Keep staying awesome my friend!
Just curious how hot the actual metal frame and metal enclosure get? Too hot to touch?
Hey Brien, thanks for the question. The metal does get hot, especially the area right above where the flame is and yea you definitely wouldn't want to touch it. As for the rest of it, it really doesn't get that hot and I've never had an issue with it. Hope this helps. Thanks
Drill holes in every corner of your sluice box and use tint steaks to hold them down
Now that's something I haven't heard before and I have to say... that's a really good idea! Thanks for the comment and support my friend :)
