This video is necessary right now more than ever. As a 45 year old who has DJ'ed since the age of 11, I can honestly say that I am having the time of my life, without becoming a slave to social media. As DJs, We have one of the best jobs on the planet. We get paid to be creative and have fun. This is a concept that generations before us simply do not comprehend. Thank you, Blakey. ❤

This is exactly what it is, and even the people at the top, in their little clicks(no pun intended) are exactly this. Telling DJing to be original, whilst running a course where people can learn their routines. Or, on the flip side of that, you’ve got all these clout chasers, sharing/biggin up a dj, whose content is mediocre at best. Oh, and god forbid you highlight that😂 and, the irony is 98% of the turntablist community can’t hold a candle to the guys that came 20yrs before them. Ultimately, I say all this to say: The art form has lost its way. Hip hop was about “keeping it real” but most are sell outs looking to gain sponsorship/sell a product.

Wise words and some great advice. This is something all DJs will struggle with at some point. Passion and motivation will come and go, but those who got into deejaying from the love of clubbing or music will almost always return. It's important to evolve and grow, I struggled to find enjoyment going out to clubs after the pandemic, and the music I liked at the time didn't hit the same at home or on headphones. By embracing a more chilled out approach, I rediscovered the fun of DJing by playing music that translated well at home on a smaller soundsystem. By picking up new genres and styles along the way, you can go through phases of loving certain styles, and moving on to others when they begin to get a bit stale. I now enjoy listening to and mixing club music again, allbeit a lot less often than I used to. I admire those who stick to a genre and excel at playing it, but there are too many styles that I enjoy to do that.

I don't believe that the rest follows as a byproduct. I´ve been passionate and invested all time and money into this for 30 years. I have a good collection and a broad knowledge of different musical styles. I have technical skills, can scratch and mix on literally everything. I keep up to date with current styles while still having a deep knowledge of the foundation. I wrote for magazines, promoted over 200 events, did radio for 17 years, ran a successful label, the list goes on. Yet I hardly get booked. Unless I create opportunities for myself, I hardly get to play out. But I simply will not stop since it is what gives my life sense and direction. Music is my happy place and I will forever remain a student of the arts. Still hunting the rare vinyl and still be on the turntables several times a week and listening to music everywhere I can. Promoters book influencers with the hope that their followers will fill their pockets, the whole business sadly is very self-centered. Klute once labelled his album 'no one´s listening anymore' and this still remains true, the days were it was about your selection and music seem long gone. Don´t expect nothing from it, do it for yourself or don´t do it at all - and everything that comes back to you is a bonus ;)

as an artist, the quote at 1:10 resonates well, thank you for this video one issue i have with some younger DJs is they forgot about spreading the sound, I feel less people nowadays are digging for underground or new sounds, they just stay mainstream? idk, I don't want to name names.... I literally spend every waking day digging for more music and im not even a dj... thats why I find it stressful.... you should walk away being like where can i hear more of that not that sounded alr compared to my speakers, idk maybe im trippin... I know there are songs that dont get views, Im mainly into dubstep followed by grime are there are view counts less than 100 on yt or sc just because someone is big doesnt mean everryone knows everything they have made, most artists will make 1000s of songs or paintings just for only 1 to get recognition, I digress

Quick question. I’m a Yank but always loved dance music. Real music Pete Tong, Oakenfold, Sasha& Digweed, Nick Warren, PVD, Cox….you know the greats. Not this EDM bullshit. Either way grew up on the sound of the vinyl just before a big drop or during transitions. So I’m on old hat. QUESTION is why don’t they for this competition use OG SL 1200’s and a mixer……NO digital shit at all just the 4 main ingredients DJ, turn tables, mixer and vinyl. Wouldn’t that separate the gifted DJ’s from the bedroom DJ’s turned pro?……hell I can buy a pioneer cd DJ coffin an iPad and DJ software and get club dates in a year but that doesn’t put me on Oakenfolds level.

Making mixtapes of your own fave genres and eras is a good way to keep it interesting, esp if your gigs are commercial / open format where you can't dig in much. I've started doing a history of R&B mix series starting in 1980 just for myself and anyone who wants to tune in on mixcloud. As an added bonus you often come up with new ways to mix preparing a set and also recording yourself can help identify mistakes / bad habits. I feel like the well crafted mixtapes of the past are gone in favour of live recordings / streams which don't have anywhere near as much effort put in. Basically its good to do passion projects that don't earn you money or attract promoters etc

I loved dance music (specifically House), I saw someone do it, so I said I wanted to do it too. Started on 2 Gemini XL 500 II and some crappy mixer that didn't really work. I wanted 1200s so bad but I couldn't afford them. When my grandma died, she left me a check for $1,200. That HAD to be a sign, so I cashed the check and bought a pair of 1200s within a week...surprise, surprise my parents weren't happy at all. Frequented the record stores and started up my collection, bought a Numark DM 2002X, bought more records, more gear and started getting gigs and playing out quite a bit. I started because I loved it and I loved the culture back then. I say "back then" because social media changed the landscape and now it's about clout just like you said. One night I got so mad and disappointed of what I kept seeing on the dance floor, so I called the clubs in town the next day and said I'm done. I'll play out when it's a proper House night (Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Green Velvet, etc.), but if it's a top 10 Beatport type of thing, I don't bother. Oh and you can't call me an old man because we're the same age!

i never really had a passion for being a dj, back in the 80's i just managed to stumble across a thing that i was pretty good at, i can't scratch, i can mix, i know that i'm not the best, me and a friend had a dj company back in the late 80's early 90's, weddings, pubs, clubs.... private events, i really enjoyed it, i still mix now at 58 years old, i still like to mix, but the passion was never there. but now, people i used to hang about with, tell me that i inspired them to emulate my techniques, try new techniques and evolve.... my apathy for a thing that i found natural, seems to have inspired others to shift up a gear and move on to online streaming, becoming a club DJ, providing mixes for radio stations all over the world. all things that i never personally aspired to, but that they managed on their own. there is a lot to be said for having passion. if you have it, nurture it.

Starting in 2004 I fell in love with the music and technology being brought out. Felt I was in my element. Loved the balance I had between the number and types of gigs. Then I stopped between 2010/2011 and 2018. I fell out of love with the music. But mostly the scene around it. This was before all the heavy social media push and influencers rage. I returned when I found my love for music again. Minus the number of gigs I had before.
