Back when it was records only. No samplers, no Serato/Traktor, just straight up wax! And seeing that old gemini MX-2200 mixer with the wooden sides brings back so many memories.
Loving this series and your analysis! Would also be fun to look at some of the more infamous moments from DMC, stuff like DJ Nike 1997, possibly the funniest DJ set of all time.

Super cool to get an insiders view on the technicality and why things are impressive. Given the older tech super impressive. Makes me wonder with current comps how do ppl keep it fresh and innovate as they did back in the day?
As an old school B-Boy and DJ, I have massive respect for the skills and performance of Scratch DJ's and the talent on show. They have influenced me so much from the mid 80's to not only DJ but to perform and put hours of practice in. As they say, 'Practice makes perfect!'. The decks and mixer can be treated like a musical instrument, to explore, create new ways, new techniques, to get lost in the rhythm of not just the sound, but also rhythm in body movement, rhythm of the inner soul when you 'connect' and get that natural high, when creating sound, soundscapes and the 'Vibe' the 'Feel' of a set. It's a total buzz!! Massive respect to your talent and your insight in these video's of the art Scratch DJing, 'Subscribed' to a fellow music head. Peace and love.
Incredible! Q-Bert has so much skill but I never seen Melo-D before and that is one of the sets where not only the technique is another level but the set is a very listenable tune in itself! Keep coming back!
Great vid of the US DMC champs Blakey! Out of his 3 year streak, I personally favor Craze's 2000 World Final as I felt everything that came out of that 6 min routine was massive from the technicality to the crowd that went nuts as he closed it off 🔥🔥 Some honorable mentions go to Swamp in 97 and other showcases, Mysterio, Kico, Kid Dragon in 01, Enferno in 02 and 03, Infamous, SSSolution from Nocturnal Sound Crew, and Shotgun in 99 just to name a few 💪💪🤙🤙

Really enjoying these videos and agree with many of your choices but how can leave out Kentaro’s winning set? But then again there’s so many great sets it’s really up to the individual. Keep the videos coming 👍
Hi Blakey. Please can you break down for me a deceptively simple technique/trick. It’s Spryte from the platter pirates and it’s at 5:54 on the 2002 dmc us finals. It’s a scratch that looks like an optical illusion, I don’t even know what it’s called as it’s more a visual trick but cool nonetheless with the platter reversing and going forward on opposition to his hand. I feel modern dmc fails to bring these entertaining little awesome moments which were very much the bulk of the old school gimmicky days. Peace and love.
Remember seeing the concept of this trick on a TTV tape actually! They were showing off a Technics turntable and if you double-tapped the start/stop quickly, the platter will start to spin in reverse ⏪️
