Hundreds of Thousands of Tuna Crab Washed Up On Shore! Pelagic Red Crabs

Hundreds of Thousands of Dead and Dying Crustaceans Wash Up On Shore in Huntington Beach this morning! They are called Pelagic Red Crabs or Tuna Crab. The crabs are native to the waters of the Gulf of California, Baja California and the California Current. They spend most of their lives free swimming in large schools in the ocean. The crabs eat plankton and spend much of their time grazing in the upper 200 meters of the ocean. We have had some strong warm water currents from the south, which have brought them, unusually, further north and ashore. This occurrence may be related to El Nino.

Curious Sea Lion Pup Greets Beachgoers at Huntington Beach Pier 5/31/2015

Sea Lion pup takes a rest on the beach near the Huntington Beach pier and greets the beachgoers. It seems the pup is attracted to a lifeguard truck and makes its way to the truck. The curious sea lion pup then makes its way back to the ocean and swims away.

Huntington Beach, CA - 5/14/2015 Rain water run-off from a beach storm drain, between lifeguard towers 12 and 14, on the north side of the pier, creates a fast, moving stream to the ocean; where you can observe "sand waves" moving up stream. These moving waves are also called "antidunes".

Exhausted sea lion beaches its self in Huntington Beach, near the pier, for a much needed power nap! Lifeguards try to get the sea lion to go back into the ocean.

Awww, little buddy was just looking for friends.
Leave the sea lion to lay in peace, he's been swimming non stop throughout the ocean's water and trying to avoid sharks and other predators that might want to harm him or eat him. Let him rest where he llay to catch his breathe and strength. They are harmless creature unless you approach them first then they have a right to be defensive.

I used to service appliances for Sears. I had to fly to Avalon occasionally for work. I flew in a Grumman Goose seaplane more than once. We were about 300 ft elevation. It was fascinating to see seals, sea lions and dolphins in the channel.
Probably previously released. Now wants to go back to people taking care of him.
Lived in OC most of my life, been to Huntington many times. Don't see sea lions that often except when fishermen are at the end of the pier. Been kayaking and maybe a sea lion will come to say hello.

Several years ago I was at Huntington Beach with my family,two seals had beached themselves,one far up shore the other closer to the ocean. Two lifeguards were standing by each of them, being the curious individual I am ,began to inundate them with questions. I was that when seals beach themselves,it’s because they’re ill,the one further up shore was very sick,the other not too bad. We have an incredible marine life rescue team here in Southern California,it took about two hours fir them to arrive ,and the lifeguards stayed close to them,telling us not to approach them,I was glad to see none of these people attempted to approach thus sweet little thing,it didn’t look sick,just curious.

Leave it alone! It was probably tired and wanted to rest on the beach. It didn't need the crowd and attention it got. Poor thing.
