In this video, we start going through all the stuff that came with my 1970 Oldsmobile 442. This is easily my longest video to date. Rare doesn't even BEGIN to describe this car. Rallye Red was a special order color for the 1970 model year. In this video, I work on fixing the leak in my intake manifold. Over the summer, as I've been driving my 1971 Cutlass Supreme around, I've noticed an increasingly loud whining sound coming from the engine. My wife and I drove a lot of miles & dated in High School in my 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass, Gold Exterior, White interior. I did not know about the Hurst Olds 442 until recent years. It would have special meaning to own one of the 900+ originals, probably an investment. Perhaps, a second option would be to build a base Olds Cultlass into a Restomod in the Hurst 442 theme like Chip Foose or Ring Brothers would. I forgot about the pull footwell vents until now.

    One other thing that I noticed was on the blue car that you said was 1970 it has a more flatter top body line right behind the side back glass that body line is like the 1972 on certain body design they had two different body designs starting in 1970 with that same flatter body line and some came with the 68/69 body line I had a 1970 Cutlass s and my brother had a 1968 442 and my 70 body was identical to the 68 body except for the light's hood and grill and things so that's when I found out that they have two different body designs

      I am not 100% sure but I think what you're referencing is the sport coupe vs the holiday coupe? Post vs no post, I think. The sport coupe I think had a sharper roof line I believe, holiday coupe was more fast back.

    • @ragtopdodge
      @ragtopdodge 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not the roofline, the rear quarters. I think starting in 1970, the Cutlass Supreme (like that light blue one you shown) has a rear quarter that is flat with no rounded hump, where as all the other 70-72 examples you shown show a rounded rear hump on the rear quarter.@@oldsmobobby410

    Very informative- thanks! I always had an issue distinguishing the 71 and 72 apart. I’m going to assume that some of the confusion should be laid at the feet of the people that used some of the tail light assemblies interchangeably between 71 and 72 and that’s why I didn’t know which belonged to which. Thanks for straightening that out!

    I was sold on identifying a car my wife is inheriting (can’t read the VIN yet) as a 1971, based on your video, then you threw the wrench in with the horizontal taillights, which this one does not have. It looks most like the 1970. So, how do I have a convertible red cutlass with white stripes, dual intakes in the hood that has a rear bumper of a 1970 and a front grill like a 71 and the sides, especially at the rear resemble a 1969? So confusing. I will know more once it is towed to my yard, since all I have are photos for now. Then I can locate a readable VIN and be certain.

    Just finished watching the video and I can attest I felt the same way. Although, 442s are my favorite, a 70-72 GTO was my first bucketlist dream car I lusted after before 442s eventually won my love. However, since it was the first car I committed to one day owning I bought one anyway instead of a 442. I slept, breathed, and drank GTO as a kid in the 90s. I dropped out of high school but then said “ what the hell am I doing” bc I knew without a education I would never make enough to own one and it would always be a pipe dream, so I enrolled back in. Long story short things worked out, I’m 38, and 2 years ago I bought my 4 speed 72 Cardinal red GTO, and balled my eyes out driving it home. I remember putting the radio on and Jimi Hendrix was playing on the radio, it was like I stepped back in time and I just lost myself like a little baby. I could not believe I got it after so many years of fantasizing of owning one. I got over it though and sold it, now I’m off to get a 442. Well, I had two kids….so maybe a vista cruiser.

    Many people don't realize or know that the 455 was installed down the assembly line In Lansing, MI. Breaking G.M.'s own cubic in rules. The top brass in Detroit thought motor swap from 400 to 455 was being done at Demmer engineering & Hurst Performance. G.M.'s rule went out the window in 1970.

    A 455 is 30 over on a 400 block. I wished I knew why, GM or Cadillac already had a 502 big block, why didn't Olds just use a 502 on the W30's and Hurst Olds? I believe they are the same size about. An Eldorado I got my license in the 502 sure yanked that heavy Cadillac around with ease. The Eldo front wheel drive will eat the front tires which had to be replaced often.

      Gm rules said no higher than a 455 in a intermediate body. Before 1970 it was 400 ci that was the limit. Hurst cars got a 455 bc of a loophole since it was technically a hurst promotional car.

      @@danhoyland142 I know why GM used Hurst because in those days were rag tires burnout easier. Younger people were actually Fatally crashing GM didn’t want the liability. The large Cadillacs ended up getting the 502 but those cars were heavy.
