International Astronomy Show 2024
Just a short video of us at this years International Astronomy Show, I only bought one small item this time & we talked & caught up with quite a few at the event.
See some of you at Kelling Heath Star party in a couple of weeks so lets hope we have some clear skies.

Just an update & more Newtonian woes

Hi folks sorry I haven't been around much as I've been having a bit of an astro slump lately plus other issues to which I won't get into on here. I'm still around & the Newtonian still continues to fight me so i think this will probably be its last chance now ha ha.

Modifying the CGE Pro

I've been wanting to put a dual setup on the CGE pro as it is more than capable of coping with the weight but I came up with a problem regarding the mounts home position & how the mount is built. I did come up with a solution which I hope will be ok as you will see in the video.

We had a clear night on Saturday so decided to set up my kit at my better half's house to which I'm eternally grateful for her help in carrying the kit outside as I'm in no fit state right now. Man I hope you get that scope going! Far be it for me to give advice, but I've come to realize that we all sometimes need the astro equivalent to touching grass. No videos, no content creation, hell, no imaging, just you, a clear sky (that's a tall order) and a telescope. That said, it's exciting when things actually work once in a while, and I know you'll get yours. Cheers, and Clear Skies!

      Well I can confirm that the new focuser is fitted & most of the tilt has been sorted, I don't think I can get it any better simply as its not a PDS which as far as I'm aware have a slightly bigger secondary mirror. I was going to fit the autofocuser next but that can wait as we're gearing up for Kelling Heath star party.

      @dumpydalekobservatory 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks Nugsy don't get me wrong the first focuser I have is better than the stock Synta Crayford but if you have tilt you're gonna have a lot of agro trying to sort it. I did think about making shims but to much faffing around for my liking hence why I eventually went for the Ali Express one as it had an adapter plate that screws onto the bottom of the focuser & bolts onto the Synta plate. I don't think the rack & pinion you mention has tilt adjustment if I remember right although please correct me if I'm wrong. Cheers & clear skies

Thanks for your comment about the advice I've given I'm glad to have been some help, you've come up with some good ideas to which have helped me also. Clouds suck my friend

    Hi Titch, I was thinking of you last night early hours whilst imaging, been feeling a bit down myself, not looking forward to upcoming rotator cuff surgery, drilling bone to secure tendons etc, managed to get travel rig out for couple of odd clear nights, catching the fireworks galaxy and a nebula before being laid up. It's life I guess, never fails, my missus is making the most of me for any odd jobs😂 I do like your new focuser, nice tilt enhancement, I never knew Crayford was name of a town in UK where an engineer invented the device. I was watching The Reflactor channel on Utube when the story came up, always assumed it was the makers name, suffice to say the engineer in question never received a penny in recognition. He treated it as a gift to the astronomical community, what a nice fella eh !!! .. Atb Tom.

      Thanks Andy I like the fact its a rack & pinion focuser & not a crayford as Synta ones do suffer with some slippage on the Newtonians & the ED Evostars as I've came across issues before. Hopefully this focuser will fix the issue & I can get out of this slump, cheers.

    Keep moving forward mate. I normally allow at least 6 months to tune a telescope to how I like it. Once you get it working you can just enjoy it. A friend here in NL offered me his NEXUS corrector/reducer to try. I only just came to focus but I couldn't go through focus, therefore no auto-focus unless I changed my existing focuser for a low profile unit. I gave the NEXUS back as I'm not messing around with a working telescope. Sometimes you have got to know when to stop the improvements!

      @dumpydalekobservatory 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I only have some when I had to strip it to fix the focuser on my channel, to take it apart you need to remove the ring from the corrector plate & remove that, then remove the dovetail bars. If you have a RASA 11 like mine then you may need help to remove the mirror cell as the screws that hold it have nuts on the other side & they are quite fiddly. Due to stiction it might take some removing so be very careful when doing it. Also wear protective gloves so not to damage the optics etc. Make sure when putting it back together it goes back in the same orientation if you can so collimation should be fine or only need the slightest of adjustment, I hope this is of some help cheers.

Sadly the web offers little setup info almost like its some kind of guarded secret. I've tried Cuivs solution using the Microsoft workaround script to the letter but with no success, he said to me if it works it works if not well.... !! , I can use my phone WiFi hot-spot, but feel this to be problematic depending on location etc.. It's ok Nugsy we were late back so weren't around at the premier oops lol, I think Andy bought his with the hand controller as the listing had it pictured, the one I bought had the sensor pictured but sadly didn't get one so seems a bit of a lottery when you buy the things. That said it does work & you can always set it to do a refocus every couple of hours so not to much of an issue.

    The Gemini focuser is working great for me. No issues with it at all and a bargin at 80 Euros. Aluminium is a horrible alloy and subject to quite some variation. When the copper content is too high, you get all sorts of issues with corrosion due to the "galvanic reaction between dissimilar metals." A kind of welding for free!!! The trick is the tighten and then loosen, well at least that normally works for car heads!!!

      @dumpydalekobservatory 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I did try the loosening & tightening the screws as I tried to remove them Neil but sadly 4 still still snapped, maybe due to the poor quality of metals but it seems ok now even though its a bit of a bodge but seems solid enough so I guess I shall find out when I get round to testing it out. The Gemini focuser I have is working although I shall need to set up the backlash which I'll get round to doing to. I'm just a bit annoyed about the temperature sensor being missing & the damage done to it & all they're offering is $1.

    Nice setup Tich, did you have to account for the weight difference between the two scopes when placing the two saddles? Looked in the video like the heavier scope was closer to the center than the smaller scope, but I wasn't sure.

    • @dumpydalekobservatory
      @dumpydalekobservatory 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there Chris, yes the larger heavier scope is closer to the centre than the refractor although it's not properly balanced as yet as I'm waiting for the autofocuser to arrive so I can then attempt to balance it all properly also need to get a dew heater for the secondary mirror to so still going to be a while before it all gets a first light.

    Nice rig mate. Is that focuser ascom compliant? It does look good value for money.

      @dumpydalekobservatory 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks & yes it is Ascom compliant if you watch this video by Andy he shows you it working within NINA, the drivers can be a bit of a faff to find but he does show you how he got his. th-cam.com/video/zMlYYb_ENdE/w-d-xo.html

    The focuser looks like a clone of the ZWO EAF. I have just found it and ordered one to. Cheers Tich.

      No worries Neil I paid over that for a second hand focus cube a while back so I'm hoping the Gemini EAF is going to be ok.
