Matt Furey - Combat Conditioning

Matt Furey, author of the ground-breaking, Combat Conditioning, is often referred to as the “original guy” of bodyweight calisthenics. He was the first person to publish a book teaching people Hindu squats, Hindu pushups, bridging and other exercises.
Furey was an NCAA II Champion wrestler in 1985, who trained with Olympic Champions, Dan Gable and Bruce Baumgartner. In 1997, Furey won a kung fu world championship in Beijing.
Furey has an extensive background in tai chi, qi gong, submission wrestling (catch-as-catch-can), as well as his favorite martial art, a unique blend of the Thai-Indonesian arts of Fon Jerng and Pencak Silat, as taught by Pendekar William Sanders, who has certified him as a teacher in this system.

Matt, I like how you are still doing exercise and fitness videos. I did your Combat Conditioning about 22 years ago, and it really worked great to get me in super good shape and fitness. Now I am 67 years old, and I am still doing all kinds of workouts. But we do have to make some adjustments to how we do our workouts as we get older. But we are still working out and feeling great. That is the good news!

@Matt Furey - I’m slightly in the same boat as my friend Grandpa. I can call him that because I am older than him but younger than you. The thing I love about your training is slow/consistent wins the race EVERY Time and of course, “CHEAT LIKE HELL!!” I’ve been doing horse stance for about a year where I started in the privacy of my kitchen, I could not keep a straight face because I know I looked like someone who had some awful disease. But I kept at it and dared to have fun with it. I now juggle tennis balls at the same time or other things. I also try to do it at night before I have a small meal. I also agree with you and Vince Lombarbi, “The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It's your mind you have to convince.” Happy Thanksgiving!!

This makes sense. I'm almost 70 and still struggling to get that first off the ground push-up. Inclines are not a problem and my core is strong, so I'm going to try more isometric and partial repetition's in the way you suggest. It's a long hard road back when you're had a comfortable life and not done any real physical exercises since the time you probably had hair. Subbed. 😉👍

Old man strength is a real thing. I’m starting to discover this in my 40’s. I’m not as fast or explosive as I was in my 20’s (partly since I don’t practice sprinting or other explosive movements), but I can lift more and generally feel more solid and rooted.
