    There is exactly one game I've seen that comes close to this game's vibe: Power Soukobon. Problem is, it was a Japan exclusive for the SNES. And even then, this one is a lot more... realized?... than that. There, each room is a single puzzle, character progression is just you getting more health/power for the boss fights, and said fights aren't themselves puzzles... but here? A screen can have several puzzles, and character progression grants new abilities.

    The first time I played ICO, I too instinctively made the leap of faith back to Yorda and the castle, but I ended up dying on the lonesome section. On replay, just out of curiosity, I decided to go the other way just to see what the path not taken was. Turns out, you CAN cross to the other side of the divide between land and the castle... but the way to freedom is blocked, ironically, by a totem gate. Without Yorda to open it for you, and since you don't have the sword either, you have no choice but to stand there at the door to freedom as the other side of the drawbridge continues to retract into the ground... until at long last it retracts under your feet and you plunge into the water below, but without the benefit of going on to the lonesome section. The irony is, abandoning Yorda only ends up reinforcing her necessity, and giving you a healthy bit of reinforcement by killing you outright.

    • @Table53
      @Table53 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've done the same thing too! Not sure if I mentioned it in the video, but I also explored what happens if you run the other way and found the totem door. It's a really clever way of reminding players about Yorda's importance without directly having to tell them!

    • @LabTech41
      @LabTech41 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Table53 You didn't, but I don't think it's important enough to mention. The drawbridge is just long enough to make the mistake of abandonment memorable. It retracts slowly enough that you have enough time to test and see if there's a way to get past the totem gate to get to freedom, but there isn't, because the gate protrudes just far enough out that there's no way you can climb around it.

    I know what I’m gonna say is considered sacrilege, but I actually prefer Ico to Shadow of the Colossus. Don’t get me wrong, SotC has some of the greatest boss battles in all of video game history and is still achingly beautiful, but I’ve always preferred the quieter and meditative atmosphere and fairy tale feeling of Ico. For me, it just resonates more for me. As for The Last Guardian, I definitely place it next to Ico for how it takes the companionship of Ico but applies the epic scope and scale of SotC to it while also building on the relationship aspect.

    Just finished my first playthrough of Ico. Bought a used PS3, then bought and downloaded Ico from playstation store. Wanted to play this game before the hardware became too hard to find. Didn't know it was available to play on newer hardware than PS3. Had to wait until I finished it before watching your video. I wouldn't have wanted to have any of the story spoiled. Alternate interpretations of the ending have been bugging me for a few hours. My interpretation was basically the same as yours. In the absence of much else to suggest otherwise, I'll just believe what I see - Ico has washed up on some beach, perhaps a bit further west or east of the sunken castle, and Yorda found the strength to swim after him after the castle had sunk a bit more.

    I did actually play this when I was a kid. I lost Yorda but the game never ended and I was softlocked within the first two hours of gameplay. It's kind of weird, but I felt like that singular softlock defined the game for me, the loneliness that is a hallmark of the game, balanced by the presence of Yorda, had become horrifyingly oppressive. I remember I was playing with my dad, and he eventually got tired and left and I was left alone with ICo. To this day I still don't think I've ever felt more immersed by a videogame. It was a weird experience, but if I could be honest, it's not one I'd mind reliving.

    I’m currently replaying this game from the original disk I had as a kid and I noticed something really intriguing at 9:10 of your video. You demonstrate a really easy puzzle that I don’t remember being that easy. It turns out because I was playing on medium difficulty the colors of the gates weren’t so straightforward and you had more arrows to compensate for the more complex solution. I thought difficulty would just change simple factors like whether the droids crash or their spacing but it seems every puzzle probably has alt versions for each difficulty.

    • @Table53
      @Table53 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh wow.. my initial guess is that there might be two separate puzzles with the same base design but slightly more complicated colours? Thats definitely true with the "chasm" puzzles with all the colour arrows on the floor! Possibly a select few puzzles (where the droids can't crash) use random colours? That would be a pretty neat feature! I doubt the spacing of droids ever changes though, I reckon that's too integral to some of the designs to change without making a puzzle impossible. I'm impressed that you managed to spot this haha

      @@Table53 I wouldn't think randomly generated colors would be a game feature because they would each need to be tested to actually have a solution. But I think your first guess is right. Same base design, but level designers manually changed the colors of gates/arrows as well as how many arrows they provide to you to easily make harder and easier solutions. Also makes sense that the spacing never changes. I only spotted it because I'm currently replaying the game and had just done that level a few days ago. It stuck out to me because it was one that I vividly remember from childhood.

      @FloStudios yeah that's true. I have actually played a couple of puzzle games that can "procedurally generate" new solvable puzzles - but that seems unlikely here haha. Yeah, the only question now is whether the variations are explicitly listed as different puzzles in the game, or if each listed puzzle can change a bit!

    I think this is an utterly charming game. I’ve found myself designing heroes and backstories and enjoying them for later use in my legacy. This game sort of inspires my old creativity to tell my own stories.

    This game was interesting, definitely ahead of its time. I like many Americans missed it on launch but played it after shadow of colossus blew me away. I didn’t like it more than shadow but still greatly enjoyed the plot

    1:10:35 Actually: the pillars you can hide behind can be moved around. So, you can move them rather close to the sword and making even the last dash to the sword trivial. Just a little detail I only noticed when replaying it recently. You can reach all the sword-positions in time if you time it perfectly, but this fact makes it a LOT easier.

    • @Table53
      @Table53 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Are you serious?? I've played this game half a dozen times and I never knew that! I thought you just had to be fast and well prepared to get the sword when it was far away.. thats what I've done every time haha

      @@Table53 I noticed you could move the pillars right away. They look a bit like the ones near the main gate. Noticed I could move them on two axes, but couldn't find a puzzle to solve, then ended up triggering the boss battle. I figure this sort of thing is inevitable when a game doesn't figuratively hold the player's hand. Some players are going to miss stuff, do things sub-optimally, or get lost or stuck for a while sometimes. But it's worth it for the times when they discover stuff by chance, or because the game subtly prodded them to do something.

      @@takatamiyagawa5688 honestly my mind is still blown that those pillars can be moved.. but I guess because there was juuust enough time to run to the sword without it I never had a reason to look closer!

    This game reminds me of Potion Craft: Alchemist Simulator, where you also play a shopkeeper to whom customers come needing cures to their ailments and you use plants to cure them.

      Hey I think it's probably unlikely! At the very least not as a standalone video I enjoyed it, but my thoughts on it for the most part are similar to the base game and so I don't think I would have a huge amount to say for an entirely new video! Especially as I wouldn't want to talk about any specific areas/puzzles to avoid spoilers It will likely end up as an asterisked entry in a _Games I Want You to Play_ video But thanks for taking the time to comment! :)
