Short & curvy? Do the Persephone pants fit an hourglass figure? Sewing vlog & pattern review
Hi everyone, this week, I'm bringing you a much requested video: sewing up the Persephone pants from Anna Allen Clothing as someone "short & curvy". Do you always feel like you don't look like the people on Instagram wearing those pants? Here is my review as a more hourglass/pear shape person.
I hope this is helpful and help you decide if this pattern is for you or not. If you are a short & curvy sewist and you make those pants, don't hesitate to tag me on Instagram so I can cheer you on too!
Happy sewing,
Noémie xx

    I would not be topstitching any inseam, especially in a contrast thread. I don’t have this pattern, don’t plan on it, I do have a TNT with no side seam pant, but am pretty sure I’ve never topstitched any inseam, ever. I’ve seen some don’t this way, and I really don’t personally care for the eye being drawn to my inseam line. That would be near impossible to topstitch it, anyway. Not sure what this pattern is expecting. I just wouldn’t do it, sounds like a quick way to the asylum…….😂😊

    A high waisted trouser... It looks really nice on you but I would advise short-waisted people like me, to reconsider. I actually have broad shoulders on top of a short waist and long legs, so anything with a waist seam and especially high waisted trousers or skirts make me look extremely squat on top. For those viewers new to sewing things they actually like on themselves, I found Mariah Patties video very helpful. I'm having a massive brain melt about it, but I believed I stitched it from the inside, which wouldn't work with a twin needle. But I don't see why not do it from the outside (well, in my case I like the look of the stitch less), and then the twin needle would be GENIUS!!! Done in 1 go what would normally take two. I'll totally steal that idea from you for a future project.

    Adding my voice here for the two top solution! One light crop for summer…with the check contrasts it’s got such a fun flirty vibe and maybe by simplifying a bit you might be able to get away with the fit being not quite perfect. Then use the skirt fabric for a pattern you adore and know you’ll feel great in. Funnily enough that’s what I’ve done with two reynolds dresses I made this summer - the first just didn’t look great partly cause it was thin cotton with bright stripes (an old ikea sheet) and the fabric plus print just didn’t work with the pattern. But I chopped it off and now it’s a great reynolds top that looks fab with a black linen circle skirt I have. The other reynolds dress I made out of linen and it’s perfect! I guess I’m learning as we.l how much fabric matters lol.

    Omg I love the dress with the big and little gingham!!! I want to make one now, I think I’ll design the pattern myself since I prefer to draft my own patterns, because I’m a bit of an old shape (S or M on top, XL on bottom. So my waist is always a bit too big and my shoulders too small for patterns). For the paper bag shorts, I get the same issue. What I did to fix it is unpick about eight cm and pinch out the extra fabric at the seam. Then sew it back together with the leg fabric flat and the waist band scrunched up (so not pulling it to stretch while I sew). That completely fixed the bunching at the tummy for me 😊

    • @LaFraiseSews

      Totally feel you, I also have M on top and XL on the bottom. If you can draft, that's definitely making things easier for fitting! Re shorts: I would use cotton or linen who have a bit much re stiffness and add a wide double hem for weight? If you can, eliminate the inseams, so the seams can't rub your thighs. Re gingham: If it doesn't make you happy, don't keep it. I find I'm way more comfortable altering memades than store boughts - I'm its creator, it's mine to do with as I like 😅 Re Skirt: If you don't like the look of paperbag shorts I'd be careful not to put to much gathering in the front. As I started on a more serious (20+kg) weightloss journey, I'm hesitant to sew right now. I still made a dress for those days when it's just to hot to wear a bra at home and I made a longsleeved shortblouse for sunscreen, out of an antique bedsheet with a piece of embroidery that I made the shoulder yoke out of. I wore it on my Paaris vacation and sadly the bedsheet cotton was very hot. Since I was very good at not buying souvenirs I went for the "fabric district" that was mentioned in TheStitchery's video... Luckily I had made lots of space in my luggage 😂 Is there a sort of "fabric district" or are there fabulous fabric shops in Brussels?

    • @LaFraiseSews
      @LaFraiseSews 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The issue I have with shorts is that I made them each time quite wide. I see from my RTW that shorts that hug the leg closer stay more in place (especially between the thighs!) and work better for me. Sounds like fabric shopping in Paris was fun 😄 Now I'm jealous. We don't have a fabric district per se, but we have a few very nice stores, would it be an interesting video for you guys? (I had assumed not because almost none of my viewers are based in Belgium.)

    That Lockhart is still my favourite and you totally rock it! That's the 'big ticket' item on my upcoming spring/summer sewing list. It's finally warming up down under so I can think about fun, floaty dresses! I think my favourite winter make was my Sinclair Monty pants in a burgandy/maroon linen/tencel (so voting yes to burgandy palissade). They fit like a dream and float on my legs... closely followed by a viscose elasticated skirt (the free Sabina skirt from the little pomegranate - definitely recommend if you're looking for more comfy skirts 😊). Re: gingham crisis... are you a pinafore person? Could it work over a thicker long-sleeve top for winter to fill out the bodice? If not, I vote refashioning it into something you'll wear. A little pocket could also show off the smaller plaid on the Augustina 😊

    Re: Gingham Crisis: You could have two tops. You could make a little peplum top from the bodice of the dress, or even cut it at the waistband and have a cropped top. Because the big/little gingham interplay is so cool, and without the skirt to pull it down, the bodice might fit better. That still leaves the yardage from the skirt for another top. So many sewists say the same thing about double gauze, I'm bummed. I bought many pieces since I live in Florida and most of our summer feels like 115 degrees here. What do you recommend to make out of it?

    • @LaFraiseSews
      @LaFraiseSews 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Plenty of things would be lovely with double gauze! And you'll find it super nice to wear when it's super hot. It's just important to choose a pattern that has quite a relaxed fit. I went really wrong by trying to do something fitted. As double gauze "grows", it won't stay fitted and then it'll look sloppy. If you choose any pattern that's a relaxed fit (don't make it super oversized to start with, as you know it'll grow a bit), it'll work perfectly. I would also stay clear from zippers and buttons, as those don't look great once the fabric relax around them too. Something you just slip on, or with elastic, or even a wrap, will work a lot better! Good luck with your double gauze sewing, the actual sewing process so nowhere near as bad as I feared! You've definitely got this!

      Hi EvanNotStewart 😉 I feel like I have a big advantage sewing womenswear, stuff can be so much more flowy and loose fitting, so don't feel too bad about your makes, because I'm sure they're a lot harder to make! Can you learn something from your summer makes? I don't know if you know about this course, www.sewitacademy.com/sewingmenswear but I had heard about it (not tried it though). It's not cheap, but probably cheaper than formal training, and probably easier to follow whenever you have time as well. If you're nervous about the pants, maybe consider making a toile? (No shame if you don't, you know I'd never have the patience 😅.) Thank you so much for your comment (and your support from the start), I'm always scared people will think I'm either very unskilled, or that I complain way too much. So I'm glad you don't see it that way ☺️ I'm sure even "professionally trained" (oh gosh, that sounds serious), I'll keep messing things up 😅 I just finished my bike shorts and they turned out well, but I made so many mistakes along the way, I really wondered if I was sewing under the influence 🤪😵‍💫
