Nice look, as always❤
An underrated film, I think. It starts off a little shaky, and certainly isn't perfect, but it gets stronger as it goes, and that ending - to quote another reviewer - is an ending for the ages. Great commentary in the film, and from you guys; I enjoyed this video.
Great episode! Loved learning about some of the real life Satanic Panic happenings - fucking crazy! So glad I was born after all that. I thought this movie was fine, it was good 70s late show nostalgia that was kinda creepy, but other than that hypnosis sequence with the worms, it didn't do much for me. There's another movie about people live streaming exorcisms called The Cleansing Hour that hits harder than this one imo, and one I would recommend if you want something with more horror elements.
Gabe agrees that they definitely get it now but still felt it was a bit dull. Just wasn't their thing which is sad because they love found footage - if its actually found footage. We'll check out Cleansing Hour though! Never heard of that one.
I actually loved this film and didn't think I would. But when she clocked that nun and started her escape sequence, I was cheering the whole time, the same I was cheering on the escape sequence at the end of Get Out.
We were excited too when she planted the chicken blood! It was Final Girl behavior for sure.

EXCELLENT video essay on a AMAZING film!
I'm really enjoying these Suspiria videos, thanks...though I've come to them out of order - youtube promoted the second one to me first, but I followed that back to your channel, and was delighted to see two others! Good stuff, not enough people give Suspiria '18 its due. I'll definitely subscribe to your channel, though via my personal profile, as this is our film profile, and I don't use it much in a 'watching' capacity. Speaking of which (and I'm not generally rude enough to recommend our own videos via someone else's, but you seem to be genuine fans of this film, so I figure it might be something you'd appreciate is all) we did our own deep dive video on it, that you might like. Not trying to promote our own channel off the back of yours, we just seem to have a shared passion for this film, and I know personally I like to catch any new positive takes on this underappreciated work. Please delete if inappropriate.
We're glad you are enjoying our coverage of the film! Just for clarification, we have one video that is our full episode and then we split that into two separate videos for people who are interested in just the film review OR the history components. This is our History section, so you could watch the Film section with Gabe to get the complete story but won't need to watch the full one. We'll check out your channel and what you've covered. We're always up for connecting with other creators and hearing about other interpretations of films.
@@GhoulsNextDoor Yeah I discovered what you'd done regards splitting the video, but watched all three anyway, haha. I dig this film so much that it was worth it to me. Anyway, those two halves make a great whole. Hope you like our thoughts on Suspiria - I pretty much made the channel when I did to get my thoughts about it off my chest, hence why there's not much else there, at least as yet.
My favourite film. The subtext and themes are so intricate and multifaceted, with more and more layers revealing themselves the deeper you dig. I was one of the lucky few to see it at the cinema, and I've rarely found myself so totally immersed in a film. Afterwards I couldn't get it out of my head for weeks, and I still think about it regularly to this day.
Same experience for me. I wasn't quite sure WHAT I thought or felt about it upon seeing it in the theater when it was released. But it lingered with me for weeks and weeks, and by the time it premiered on Amazon and I saw it again it had become an absolute favorite film of mine as well. Such a deeply rich, artistic experience every time I watch it. I'm so glad to see this groundswell of appreciation that the film is building.
@@Polymorphia1965 yes, this one's well overdue for public reappraisal. As you say, great that people are slowly catching on to how good it actually is.
Found out that some people don't like the supernatural aspect of the movie. Like, ten families were brutality offed by each father who then offed himself, with the obvious presence of a non family member at each crime scene. How are you gonna un-supernatural that?
I can see how viewers were expecting something more along the lines of Seven and getting this would be jarring. I think the supernatural parts made the film stand out a lot more. - Gabe
hmm interesting. Everyone keeps hyping this movie, and the more I find out about it, the less interested I am. I think it's because I turn to horror to unpack fears in interesting ways, whereas what I see here is bringing in ultimate evil and just giving it a lot of ornate arbitrary rules to operate by and then setting it against general goodness. I don't feel like seeing it is gonna help me think anything new about religion, paranoia, stranger predators, men who terrorize their families and children or women and children. I guess I'd be more likely to see The Witch, where there seems to be somewhere to go with the perception we get about how evil acts on people and how people act on evil. I mean, no matter how detailed the lore is, I'm unconvinced here that it functions to do more than simply make the evil complex and intentional. I don't even think that makes it more scary - random evil is just as threatening, if not more so, when the stakes are similarly high. So if it doesn't make it more interesting, isn't this just repetitive pushing of emotional panic buttons? Is this a good movie, or just an intricately made one? Whither complexity?
Its definitely a film where evil is just way more powerful than the regular person and the film's focus is much more on Harker and her "specialness." But we totally get your take and its definitely not a film for everyone. Its a weird one and wasn't something Gabe really enjoyed the first time they watched it.
Alicia Witt gave me a vibe like Clarice
We can totally see that. A reluctant contributor dealing with a smart and terrifying murderer.
Really great perspective. Sadly, I’ve tried sooo many times to interpret the meaning of “Us” just to overlook the obvious classist narrative. I also liked how you shared that we are all prone to crossing the other side of the pole in terms of our behaviors, actions, and engaging in grave atrocities that can cause chaos. One of those thoughts to marinate on. Made me think of what James Baldwin when he said, “Everyone you see is also you.”
Thank you for watching and letting us know your thoughts! Every time we watch this film we find a new thing to love or find. Were you able to watch Gabe's review of the film too? (We separate our episodes into two parts).
I love it the holyer than thous always get caught up in the end ..sexscandels extortion...something....under the illusion of virtue and when truth actualy comes out their even more fucked up and flawed as the ( siners ) I prayed for that hooker after we had sex and did cocaine..lol buddy for all the good it's doing you ditch that bible ,and enjoy hookers and cocaine then tell ppl you do..even if some think ur a shitty person at least ur an honest shitty person ..not a hypocrite hiding behind a cross .
What's with the chick in the make up ????
I loved X and Pearl but Maxxxine was little bit underwhelming for me especially third act what kills it for me but still loved Mia Goth overall it was decent but not great
Hard agree. We had such high hopes - which maybe is why we were disappointed by it. We loved X and Pearl, and this one felt rushed and hurriedly put together.
@@GhoulsNextDoor I agree
I love this movie. Im not a dakota johnson fan but thought she was good in this role. I loved Tilda swinton and mia goth! Do you think rituals like the ending dance scene actually happen?
Dance is very much a ritual for many cultures. We wouldn't go so far as to say there are dances out there that break people's bones! But there are dances that free your soul, allow you to connect with your community, and express emotions that are otherwise hard to communicate. Dance can be quite powerful.
Unfortunately a couple of days ago the German Foreign Ministry spokesman Sebastian Fischer just said that “we see no signs of gen****de by Israel in G*za” So…history lessons vs. lessons learned.
Your comment is hidden - 'Ghouls Next Door' themselves may not have been alerted to it, or seen it. Same with your other one on this subject. I knew to click on the 'sort by newest first' option to find it, when I saw there were supposedly 4 comments, but I could only see two. The only reason I knew to do this was because I have another channel, and on that channel someone posted a comment, then asked me elsewhere why I hadn't replied. I told them they must have posted on the wrong video, because youtube has not alerted me to any new posts, and there aren't any new posts visible to me. That person then told me to click newest first: low and behold, there it was, and I'd have never known about it, even as the channel's creator. Once responded to as said creator, the original post became visible alongside the other posts in the general chat.
“Holocaust was necessary for their security” definitely has direct parallels to what’s happening in the Middle East now
See my response on your other post here re this subject. 'Ghouls Next Door' probably haven't been alerted to this, and likely haven't seen it.
LOOOVE this version. Luca has a great handle on gore that ramps up to the Gran Guignol at the finale. The dance sequences set to Thom Yorke’s score, used to cast spells, are incredibly choreographed and edited. It’s really filmed and designed in an incredible 70s aesthetic. I think it gets bogged down by the historical context a little, but I personally like and rewatch this version more than the original. I’m even really moved by the final bedside encounter (through the prosthetics and all).
We agree! We enjoyed this version even with the historical context. We <3 historical context!
Excellent film 📼
We're curious, what did you most like about the film? What did you take away after watching it?
@@GhoulsNextDoor it kept me guessing all the way through, I'm usually pretty good at figuring things out but with this one I didn't and I love that 🍺🍻
@@ackerjawaka1966 It was definitely different! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I just saw it!
What did you think? Come watch it in person with us at our screening later this month!
I love this movie so much
We're curious - what did you love about the film? What were your main takeaways? We love hearing what people get out of the films we cover.
Really good video! Thoughts about the ending being more hopeful, that Owen realizes that Maddy is right, meaning EVERY person is a Melancholy agent, so to get out, Owen has to "act natural" within the Fun Center and pretend nothing is wrong until they are alone and able to escape?
We also hold on to hope that the ending is Owen's wake up call and that after the film, Owen starts fighting for their real life. Seeing everyone glitch out like that has to be a wake up call and the last time Owen came to that realization - that this isn't real life, their "father" punished them harshly. So the ending very well could be them "playing it cool" to not get the same punishment and instead sneak out in a safer way. - Gabe.
The way I interpreted the "buried alive" motif is that making such a big decision feels like social suicide, essentially burying oneself alive before you do it, however, once you take the leap it feels like clawing oneself out from having been buried alive. That and also a very literal nod to & subversion of the "bury your gays" trope. But I do agree it's a downer and viewers could take away a more defeatist message.
Totally agree! I like to think that it is a direct commentary on the Bury Your Gays trope and that you're burying your imitation self to become your real self. I hope that most people feel that way when watching. I just also worry about baby gays and people in very vulnerable places seeing this and not quite seeing that message. Its the gamble we play as media creators. - Gabe
My inhaler cost over $400. EACH. I use a rescue inhaler only due to cost and am currently useing one that expired 3 years ago because i cant afford it. It's INSANE
The Fall of the House of Usher was interesting and took a lot of attention, so seeing so little number of videos about the connection between the show and the Sackler family is unsettling. You did a great job!
Saludos
🎉❤
I loved this movie and this was a great discussion (I especially appreciate Kat's honesty and the empathy from you both)! At my theater, I heard people being kind of disappointed because they were expecting more jumpscares and for it to be more conventionally scary, but I think there were great scares and great concepts behind Talk to Me. I'm super interested to see what the filmmakers and the lead actress do next. Not sure if the Ghouls could fit this movie into your upcoming series, but I'd love to see you two discuss I Saw the TV Glow!
Thank you for watching! We're so glad to hear that our analysis resonated with you. We often encounter films that some horror fans claim aren't "horror" enough but that really boils down to what a viewer considers to be horror. For us, horror comes in all shapes and sizes - jumpscares or no! And we're happy to say that we will be covering I Saw the TV Glow as part of this series! Stay tuned for it in August. :)
@@GhoulsNextDoor AHHHHHHH YESS 🔥
A few things I felt compelled to clarify, Futhark runes are not Norwegian. This is a movie set in Sweden with no references to Norway or ‘Norwegian culture specifically. If Kanji appeared in a movie set in Japan, would this be poking fun at Japanese culture or highlighting the toxicity of it? There is nothing about Islam that compels you to become the Taliban, so the Taliban are not “Radical Islam” and should not be associated with the millions of admirable and moral Muslims. And so there is nothing about Nordic or Swedish culture that compel you to become a murderous white supremacist. That is also, something entirely different. Approaching these complex topics through an educational, objective lens with due respect might have your videos getting more than 10-100 views.

WHAT??? Ashma inhalers $125 ! Each??! They are free in Australia. It does cost like $10 for the pharmacist to fill the script but otherwise..... I'm just shocked 😲 That's disgusting, I'm so sorry you have to deal with this 🙏🏼❤️
It wa really sad to see so many of our favorite creators sign that propaganda letter from Biden.
Even freaks got something to do
I really ❤ the Harga! 😁. Defs the good guys in the film.
I liked the film... The best parts for me, number one, was the music accompaniment for the "fire temple" scene. And number two the linen material costuming. I want one of those embroidered peasant shirts.
2:00 Wtf are you talking about?
Just discovered this. What a great conversation!
If dani's parents and sister were murdered would that change anything for you?
By someone else and not Dani's sister? It would certainly be a start and would've helped us settle into the movie easier. But since this is the beginning and it sets a tone about mental illness, we were immediately put off.
Are you guys serious.... We're talking about a horror MOVIE (aka not real) and your criticizing all the horror , evil/bad, scenes. This reaction vid is weird.
Race baiting?
i thought it was better than Gone Girl at least lol
This is probably the earliest I was able to call a movie plot twist, before it was produce it was on the blacklist of unproduced screenplay and just reading the blurb I was able that the twist was that it was the matrix (went to find the old version screenplay that was floating online back then just to confirm it). When they were news about the general casting of the movie I also thought "Okay, nobody find strange that the 50's dystopian oppressive suburb, but it is apparently fully integrated?"
I think the twist ending was the least interesting piece of the film. But the film as a whole was quite perplexing.
I actually wanted to see this film when we saw some trailers a few years ago. Finally watched it on streaming and was not into it at all. Oh well? 🤷
Certainly not for everyone! There are some truly silly moments and I think for most animal monster films, that's what we're looking for - silliness.
Beyond sitting in a lawn chair along the coast, I don't get in the ocean 😅. Not trying to tempt anything out there lol. I respect sharks and think they're super cool, but have no interest in being around any of them.
Kat agrees with this idea! They do not play with the ocean and all the terrifying things in it.
This movie was bananas, lol. I did wish there was some kinda explanation for why this sloth was so smart. Have you seen the video of the guy moving a sloth off the road and into a tree? The sloth reaches out and looks like it's hugging the guy as if to say'thank you'. Did anything in your sloth research say anything about this behavior?
Ok wtf...cordyceps for tarantulas??? That's some nightmare fuel!!! I live in Vegas and we've been seeing reports of NV having the most cases of lethal fungal infections from Candida auris, and then September was the first ever case of a human developing a fungal infection that until now was only seen in plants! 😯😯😯
Another fantastic episode!! ❤ I've read the book and watched the movie loads of times and the little details i notice each time is amazing! This film is so deep
We are *still* learning and catching new things about this film. Its such a fun rabbit hole to find yourself going down.
