MAGDA OLIVERO "The Legendary San Jacopino Concert" remastered 2024 HD
The reasons why this concert deserves the word “Legendary” in its title are multiple. First, for a recital of operatic arias, it is very rare for an artist to sing more than 5 or 6 difficult and vocally taxing arias; here Magda Olivero tackles 13 of them in a single concert. Also, she had politely asked not to record the concert, being a performance she was doing in a church. Later, when I asked her why she had requested not to record. She replied: "Because for me that was a very special event, it was like a series of prayers. But now I am grateful for the disobedient person that recorded the concert, as it’s one of the most rewarding and engaging concerts of my career."
That evening of March 28, 1969, Magda could not have been in better voice, the intensity, the interiority and the sheer beauty of her interpretation blending with the natural echo of the church created a most entrancing atmosphere. The news and the pirate tapes of that Florence Concert did not take long to reach a small group of New York aficionados.
Among those were Alfred Hubay, then Box Office Manager at the Met, Terence (Terry) McEwen, then Head of London Records, Henry Wrong, who later became director of the Barbican Centre and Howard J. Hook Jr., one of Metropolitan Opera board of directors. As the youngest member of the group, I’m now the only one left to bear witness to that period of when Magda Olivero was the star of our selective opera gatherings.
Back then, the only way we could listen to those “Live" performances was via reel to reel tapes, and the tape that was circulating in New York then was of poor quality as the person in Florence that had “illegally” recorded the concert did not want to reveal himself. After many tries ant trips to Italy,
I manage to track down the owner and make the best copy I could before the small Philips cassette recorder that was used became totally obsolete.
Since then, that precious document has been remastered a few times and as the founder and director of “The Magda Olivero Archives” I’m proud to offer to all opera lovers this latest version. These haunting moments of pure musical bliss can continue to be shared and are now yours to relive or to discover.

I motivi per cui questo concerto merita la parola “Leggendario” nel suo titolo sono molteplici. In primo luogo, per un recital di arie d'opera, è molto raro che un artista canti più di 5 o 6 arie difficili e vocalmente impegnative; qui Magda Olivero ne affronta 13 in un solo concerto. Inoltre, aveva chiesto gentilmente di non registrare il concerto, trattandosi di un'esibizione in una chiesa. In seguito, quando le chiesi perché avesse chiesto di non registrare. Mi ha risposto: “Perché per me era un evento molto speciale, era come una serie di preghiere. Ma ora sono grata alla persona disobbediente che ha registrato il concerto, perché è uno dei concerti più gratificanti e coinvolgenti della mia carriera”.
Quella sera del 28 marzo 1969, Magda non avrebbe potuto avere voce migliore, l'intensità, l'interiorità e la pura bellezza della sua interpretazione che si fondeva con l'eco naturale della chiesa, creavano un'atmosfera davvero ammaliante. La notizia e i nastri pirata di quel concerto di Firenze non tardarono a raggiungere un piccolo gruppo di aficionados newyorkesi.
Tra questi c'erano Alfred Hubay, allora Box Office Manager del Met, Terence (Terry) McEwen, allora responsabile della London Records, Henry Wrong, che in seguito sarebbe diventato direttore del Barbican Centre e Howard J. Hook Jr., uno dei membri del consiglio di amministrazione del Metropolitan Opera. Da allora, questo prezioso documento è stato rimasterizzato più volte e, in qualità di fondatore e direttore di “The Magda Olivero Archives”, sono fiero di offrire a tutti gli amanti dell'opera questa ultima versione. Questi momenti struggenti di pura beatitudine musicale possono continuare a essere condivisi e ora sono vostri, da rivivere o da scoprire.

    Ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere e per molto tempo seguire le recite d'opera e i concerti . Invitarla alla ns.Ass.ne Lirica è stata l'occasione per capire oltre alle sue capacità canore la sua cultura, come persona di grande umanità. Posso dire che Maria Callas è tutt'ora considerata "La divina" , con grande merito, altrettanto dico che la Olivero è da considerarla una "Interprete straodinaria" tanto che Cilea il compositore di"Adriana Lecouvteur" volle solo Lei alla prima dellopera. Cultura,persona affabile, umile come tutti i grandi artisti. Il suo ricordo rimane incancellabile. L' ultima esibizione l' ha fatta quasi centenaria Grande rispetto e stima anche per i suoi colleghi.     Birgit Nilsson's laser tones and very direct approach, without shortcuts, to the high notes are unsurpassed. Her voice reaches straight across the orchestra and out to the last row of the hall. Unparalleled!

      If I understand correctly, you say that Magda Olivero's voice production reminds you of Birgit Nilsson unsurpassed approach to high notes. It's unfortunate that Nilsson never sang the Sempre libera, as she was more a wagnerian soprano.

      Así es, Denis. Magda Olivero tenía todo, habiendo vivido 102 años, fue ignorada por los directores de orquesta y de los teatros, como por los críticos y periodistas. Su Adriana Lecouvreur, como su Tosca y Violeta, son antologicas. Por suerte existen grabaciones directas en el teatro, como su interpretación de Adriana Lecouvreur completa. Francesco Ciléa la admiraba y le pidió que interpretara su Adriana, que fue estrenada por la soprano Angelica Pandolifini, quien tenia un timbre lírico y delicado similar al de Alicia Albanese. En el aria Io son l´umille ancella (Soy la humilde servidora), que también la dejó grabada la Pandolfini, la Olivero deja atrás a la Callas y a la Tebaldi, con su messa di voce (entonación fuerte que luego se esfuma) en esta aria, una de las más difíciles para sopranos por la incomidad del agudo final, que en la mayoría de los casos no lo pueden sostener con la amplitud de respiración (fiato) y las inflexiones que lo hace la Olivero. En vivo, también dejó grabada en el teatro y en el estudio, Fedora, también de Ciléa, con di Stefano y del Monaco, respectivamente, dos tenores que en estas versiones hacen gala de su belleza y expresión vocal (di Stefano) y de su potencia y juventud vocal (del Monaco). Sin negarles a la Callas y la Tebaldi sus méritos, Magda Olivero merece un lugar a la par de las mejores sopranos de la historia. Saludos,

    Objetivamente, la Olivero conservó en mejores condiciones su voz, que a sus 65 años, muestra más expresión, un vibrato bien firme que siempre lo tuvo, con una messa di voce mejor que los de la Callas y Tebaldi, y amplio fiato en el sostenido de las notas. La Callas se lleva la peor parte con su vibrato oscilante (wobble) y la Tebaldi muestra un fiato bien corto en el si bemol al final, lo que es natural que pase porque un cantante puede estar bien hoy y mañana no. Son pocos, como la Olivero, los cantantes que haya conservado bien sus voces en la época en que, a partir de los 50 años se empieza a deteriorar la voz debido a distintos factores, entre ellos Birgit Nilsson, Robert Merrill, Jan Peerce, Kurt Baum, Richard Tucker, Ivan Kovlovstky y otros pocos. Pero, en sus épocas de esplendor vocal, la Callas tuvo todas las cualidades de una cantante de ópera completa; la Tebaldi, con su voz de ángel, tuvo potencia vocal, brillantez, inflexiones del bel canto, amplio fraseo y actuación escénica; en cambio, la Olivero actuaba con su voz y su cuerpo, y tal vez el único defecto que se le puede señalar --aunque cuestión de gustos-- es vibrato caprino, graciasl al cual siempre pudo emitir su voz con firmeza en toda su extensión, como, por ejemplo, Jan Peerce y otros pocos. Ha habido otras grandes intérpretes de Tosca, entre ellas Darclée, Lawrence, Milanov, Kirsten, Caniglia, Nilsson, Price, Caballé, Stella y Te Kanawa. Saludos,

    L'8 settembre di dieci anni fa moriva la signora Olivero. Il 14 settembre fecero una commemorazione in palazzo Cusani, qui a Milano, in cui cantarono le arie dalla Bohème. Ancora, dopo dieci anni, siamo qui a ricordare Magda Oliviero e la sua arte impareggiabile.

      Hanno organizzato, quella volta, una commemorazione in ricordo della signora Olivero, che era appena scomparsa. Vivo a Milano e per quanto ne so non credo abbiano poi organizzato altro in ricordo della signora Olivero. Non so se "Grandi voci alla Scala" abbia dedicato uno dei suoi incontri, al Ridotto dei palchi, in suo ricordo. Purtroppo non glielo so dire, perché non sono in contatto con alcuna associazione o gruppo.

      È scritto nel video sotto la foto della Tebaldi: Met. New York 1970. Tutti e tre i Vissi d'arte risalgono all'ultima volta che la Callas (42 anni), la Tebaldi (48 anni) e la Olivero (65 anni) hanno cantato il ruolo sul palco del Met.

    Beautiful rendition but a little quick for my taste. De Los Angeles allows the aria to flow over you while I felt I was having to catch up with this version.

      Puccini specified andantino ingenuo, not largo, not adagio, not even andante. The aria ask for a gentle but moving tempo expressing Lauretta's eagerness to go to Porta Rossa to buy a wedding ring. One has to get use to the tempo.(see the text above)
