Fixing the Kohler Bearing Plate Part3 (on the Wheel Horse 704)
I took this tractor apart expecting to replace the bearing side plate, but it's an uncommon style with a bushing instead of a bearing. I think I have it fixed and now I'm putting the engine back together.

Kohler Bearing Plate Change on a Wheel Horse 704
มุมมอง 384หลายเดือนก่อน
The pull starter on this nice Wheel Horse 704 couldn't be bolted down properly. The bearing plate behind it had a broken corner so 1 bolt couldn't be used. Another hole in the bearing plate was stripped so that bolt couldn't be used. The engine side plate had to be changed. In this video I remove the side plate to find that it's rather unique. I hope I can find a replacement.

This Wheel Horse has a manual transmission, but the clutch/belt didn't engage until the pedal was almost vertical. The clutch rod was not long enough to adjust it where I wanted it, so I added more threads to the end of the clutch rod. Now the clutch/belt engages sooner so the pedal is not as far up and I have more control of the tractor.

    Thanks for your videos. I'm working on a JD 112 and and your video series was very helpful. Mine was wired POSITIVE to GROUND... is that normal? Has anyone else seen that?

    • @PackratsFabrications
      @PackratsFabrications 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's not normal, I think it's probably a mistake. I"d check the manual. I don't have any JD books so I don't know if an operators manual would have any wiring info, it might have to be a service manual. If you have a Kohler engine with a Delco-Remy starter generator they are normally negative ground.

    • @Dale-s1u
      @Dale-s1u 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@PackratsFabrications Thanks for the quick reply. In your video, you have the battery with the terminals towards the front of the tractor, and the ground cable is on the left side terminal. Aren't most small batteries positive on that side?

    • @PackratsFabrications
      @PackratsFabrications 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The batteries are available either way. I used one of my Wheel Horse batteries, I don't know what the JD should have. I also don't have the battery hold down bracket, that might dictate which style should be used.

      @@PackratsFabrications Does it make sense that with the positive side grounded, it seems to run fine and the voltage regulator is charging the battery?

    • @PackratsFabrications
      @PackratsFabrications 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's interesting, I've never thought to try it. In the Delco-Remy Starter/Generator service manual the example circuits are shown as negative ground. When I buy a regulator the box or documents usually say for negative ground systems so maybe you'd have to change the regulator. The starter is a DC motor so I'd think it would run backwards if you connect it backwards. It seems to me it might work if you have a starter that turns the correct direction (Cub Cadet starter generators turn the other direction) and possibly a positive ground regulator if they are different. If anybody knows for sure, add a comment.

    What a brilliant demonstration on an engine part that we so take for granted. Broke the pull cord on my Kohler Magnum 8. For me, a very mechanical, fix anything man, came unstuck, when I took the whole pull cord assembly off, & then proceeded to take it apart at the work face, in the field. Thought that should be easy, made the mistake of taking the pulley out of its housing, instead of 1st looking up the procedure on YT. After watching this it at home, it took all of about 10 minutes or less to reassemble it. Thank You so much 😊👍 You have put a big smile on my face.

It worked great, flowed like self leveling pudding , incredible bond. I suggest using a map gas head instead of the propane head, only because it's a large piece of aluminum that you have to heat up.

    • @PackratsFabrications
      @PackratsFabrications หลายเดือนก่อน

      If the shifter moves forward and back like it normally would but don't move sideways at all, the shifter rails inside might be stuck or rusted. Pull the drain plug and see if water comes out first. If no water comes out put the plug back in. If you remove the shifter boot there's a full dog set screw with a lock nut. If you remove the set screw you can remove the shifter and look down into the hole. When you put it back together both rails should be in neutral, the tip of the setscrew goes into the hole of the shifter pivot ball. When you tighten the lock nut, the screw should be in as far as possible without binding the shifter movement.

    • @dieselwrench3621
      @dieselwrench3621 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PackratsFabrications I really appreciate the advice. It moves freely side to side in neutral but will not go into any of the gears , so the shifter rails are probably the problem. It sat out exposed to the elements, and I looked at it today and the shift boot is half gone, so water probably did get in.

    • @PackratsFabrications
      @PackratsFabrications หลายเดือนก่อน

      If the tip of that set screw breaks off the top of the shifter can move side to side but the shifter is really twisting. That's an easier problem to fix, check the tip of that set screw. there should be an unthreaded portion at the tip about 1/8 inch long to go into the shifter pivot ball hole. It has to be a full-dog style or at least a half-dog style set screw, not everybody sells them.

      Here's 3 possibilities: 1. If the mower deck drive belt is loose it might squeak, make sure the belt is the right tension. 2. If the mower deck drive belt is worn out it might ride too low in the pulley and not get traction. It has to be riding on the angled part of all the pulleys. 3.If the mower deck can't turn for any reason, like a bad spindle bearing or something jammed in the blades, the belt might slip is it can't turn the mower. Disconnect the drive belt and make sure the blades turn easy.
