Report about 2 Shows in Paris : #FranceQuintessence & #SalonClubExpertDugas (Première 22/09/24)
This was initially planned to be a live show rather than a video, but, considering how bad is my connection currently, I’ve decided meanwhile to record a video & then release it as a « Première », in order to be able to interact with you in the chat this Sunday, 22 of September...So there you have it, a report about 2 shows I have recently visited this month, gathering over 30 brands of whisky & other spirits :
1/The « France Quintessence » 2024 show, hosted this year by the « SIRH/+ Omnivore /Food & Paris Coffee show...located in Parc Floral, Vincennes. It is a big show, that, honestly, I didn’t had time to visit, except for the « France Quintessence » show area : As usual I wanted to focus on whisky & then, if possible, a few other spirits. Note that this show is only intended to present whiskies & other spirits from France...
2/ The « Salon Club-Expert Dugas » 2024 show, located this year again in the beautiful site which is, by the way, classified as a "historical monument". It is where the Maison Dugas (an importer & distributor of mainly whisky & other spirits, but also of some fortified or not wines…) shows his novelties & presents its brands to professionals, but, since a few years, also to the public audience. This show is about whiskies & other spirits from Scotland & other countries including a few French brands as well...Dugas is a rival of « La Maison du Whisky », who will organize his own show in 2 weeks, the « Whisky Live Paris » show, for which I will do a separate video in October...Stay tuned !
As usual, time stamps will help you navigate into the video (please note that they will be fully disclosed after the Première). Thanks in advance for watching, and even more to those who will watch this in its entirety.

    Merci pour cette synthèse des 2 shows. Le salon Dugas semble plus étoffé en terme de whiskies que France Quintessance. Plutôt bien résumé, Guillaume, en tout cas pour cette année : J'ai eu l'impression d'une baisse considérable du nombre de stands de whiskies français, notamment l'absence de la Distillerie Bertrand qui m'avait impressionné l'an dernier (je dois d'ailleurs y revenir avec la chronique de pas moins de 5 bouteilles), mais il y avait aussi Warenghem (Armorik), Tessendier (Arlett), Lachanenche, Brana (autres spiritueux mais aussi whisky)...Oui et côté Cognac, le stand de Guilhem (Grosperrin) vaut à lui seul le déplacement, comme d'habitude...A suivre, ce week end, le Whisky Live Paris, le reportage vidéo suivra dès que possible...

    Hello Greg, thanks for all your video's! I need your help. You've already helped me by saying in one of your video's that the 'D' symbol was stopped in 1983 in France, (is that right?) My question today is, do you know when they stopped printing GL on the labels instead of abv. I have an old bottle of Chivas 12 form 1980s, 90s ???? with both GL & ABV on it. Merci par avance, Tom (an Englishman living in France)

    • @GregsWhiskyGuide
      @GregsWhiskyGuide 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks, Tom...the "G.L." mention (standing for "Gay-Lussac" a famous 19th century chemist), stopped in 1980...abv replaced it then...maybe this was a transitional practise during year 1979 ?

    • @tjw21bath
      @tjw21bath 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@GregsWhiskyGuide Thanks Greg. That's great, I couldn't find any info myself but I knew you would know! I wasn't sure if the transitional phase could extend longer than that into the 1980's or not. The particular bottle I'm talking about had a transparent plastic pourer integrated into the neck (impossible to remove) but it was very fragile and shattered easily, as if perished. It broke a bit when pushed with only slight pressure, so I decanted and filtered out the tiny plastic pieces. I think the bottle was for the Spanish market, do you know anything about these plastic pourers? Maybe that could tell us something about the date?!? again, thanks in advance.

      @@tjw21bath ah, those damned plastic pourers, made for bars & cocktails...(it is possible to remove but difficult) I have a Famous Grouse like that, and as surprisingly as it could sound, it is relatively recent, while it was rather a old practise...so I don't knowexactly when, sorry...

    Last minute note : As I did finish to sip the Rampur after the video recording, I had to be honest & accept the truth, that the rating announced in it was below my feeling, and as the whisky had a fantastic nose & gorgeous palate, with a lingering finish, and didn’t stop to developp with a few drops of water, I had to increase the rating & finally got to 95/100, after hesitating at 94/100 (the initial rating in the video being 93,5/100). Of course it is subjective, but this whisky clearly exceeded my expectations... / Also, sorry, I forgot to state the information that the first whiskies under the Rampur brand were released in 2016 (« Double-Cask » & « PX »).

      Thanks a lot, Jeff. I didn't had time to develop all my thoughts about Mackmyra there, but maybe you're right (though I won't do that on my side, too many other distilleries bottlings on my wishlist already). Like I said, I struggled to find value & tasting opportunities about Mackmyra these last years & there are even new players like Agitator who seem to experiment too & bring some fresh air to the Swedish market...I would be curious, btw, to hear your thoughts about one of the weirdest seemingly simple design their bottles & labels have...Cheers !

    Bonjour Greg, merci pour ta franchise. Je n'ai jamais dégusté de Mackmyra mais je connais un peu la gamme de Kingsbarns. J'ai visité la distillerie l'année dernière et j'ai apprécié le Doocot, le Balcomie un peu moins. J'ai aussi eu l'occasion de déguster un single cask finit en ex fût de Laphroaig. Il était plutôt bien équilibré, très gras mais pas très complexe. Comme tu l'a souligné, c'est effectivement étrange de sortir ce produit dans la gamme permanante alors que le reste est plutôt très bien fait.

    Hi Greg. Kingsbarns released a bottle for the German market called the Loch Levin ( 1680 bottles). Matured in FF ex bourbon barrels at a nice 57.5 % vol and with a 7 year old age statement. The only Mackmyra I’ve had was one called the Kungstorv ( kings peat).As I understood or remember the peat, oak, barley and juniper branches were all Swedish. Wasn’t a bad dram for a 43% er. Thanks for the honest review of Coaltown. I must admit: when they announced the release, I was a bit wary, because of similar things from other producers, so I was going to wait until I had a chance to taste before buying a bottle and you have reinforced that (although I will give it a fair chance if I can). People seem to think they have to offer examples of every style of whisky, even if that is not what they are good at (Filey Bay being a prime example, where they felt forced into doing a peated finish...) - I wish we could let them concentrate on their preferred style. The whisky world is weird at the moment!

    • @GregsWhiskyGuide
      @GregsWhiskyGuide หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Andrew...They might not be happy with it, but it is my opinion, despite the gift/collab/press sample whatever you can call it. I would second you partly about other young distilleries feeling they have to release a peated expression to complete the range, but I do find the Filey Bay peated finished more satisfying (though not being too complex-btw, I'm late on my review of my 4 Filey Bay, but hope to do it soon), and for instance here in France, I found the Artesia "tourbé"' (tourbé meaning peated) very good...Also I liked the Cotswolds peated I tried once...but indeed I'll tend to favor a peated malt expression rather than the use of a peated cask only...as it comes across as less "superficial" ("surfaced peatsmoke" with no depth'). Cheers !

    Erratum : While presenting the KINGSBARNS « Coaltown », I got confused between the notions of « peated cask » & « peated malt » : In the case of this whisky, they used peated casks, so didn’t peat the malt that still comes from them, so no need to speculate about other malting companies, but rather about the distilleries where the peated casks could come from. Sorry about this mistake.

    I can understand why you have used Whiskybase numbers for reference, but am a bit confused with a couple: WB N°4481 does not bring up an Islay, so I think you may have meant 4181, and WB N°133578 comes up as Yoichi Woody & Vanillic, not a French whisky at all... (maybe 135578?). Good choices (and explanations) though!

    Sorry to burden a long video with a long comment! I always struggle with the rules for these lists (trying to pick NAS ones was the worst!). With the Permashelf Pour: I've only bought 'the same' (allowing for batch variation) bottle more than once in 11 cases and only Laphroaig 10 more than three times, so I suppose it has to be that. In my experience, there is no such thing as a Crowd Pleaser that everyone will like: I once took a bottle of Tantallan (mystery Highland/Speyside?) and a bottle of Laphroaig to a party and almost half the room preferred one and almost half preferred the other and there were a few people that didn't like either! Although I mostly drink with other Scotch drinkers, I am also a member of the British Bourbon Society and think I am one of the few to like both. If pressed I'll go Tullibardine Sovereign or 1792 Bottled-in-Bond. Maybe Woodford Reserve to split the difference? For the Decadent Pour, I could choose my birthday drams: Highland Park - The Dragon 1961 and Ledaig 42 year old Dùsgadh, though either of those could fit the next category instead. Or I could take things down a notch or two and go for Clynelish 18 TWE Retro Label. But having so many whiskies to choose from, decadent could be different every day for a year! The V.I.P. Pour depends very much on who that is: bourbon drinkers have been impressed by A.H. Hirsch Reserve 1974 16 year old, for instance, but I've also enabled at least three people to have a 40 year old whisky on their 40th birthday and pouring something from people's birth year can be quite impressive too! Or from a closed distillery (or several). (Oh, I now have at least one bottle each from 135 different Scotch malt distilleries, including 17 closed ones, most of which don't even exist to be revived.) The Attention Grabber is actually somewhat easier: my attention was certainly grabbed by the Diageo Special Release Port Dundas 20 year old from 2011 (I won't give my actual quotation of the time, as expletives were involved!) and that has been the case for others I've supplied it to as well. If rarity is a bar to inclusion, I'll often say Octomore x.3 instead.

      Oh no Andrew that's great !!! 👌Interesting choices & questions....Laphie 10 from the 70s/80s are killers but too expensive (not a fan of current ones, and would prefer the Quarter cask every day, but its me). Haven't tried the Tantallan...Yeah Bourbon options for Crowd pleasers are a good call...Wow you're older than me, lol...Haven't tried those 2 x 1961 but I'm raving bout them, especially the Ledaig which I heard of (& stunning packaging too). For the VIP pour I agree it has to be adapted to the guest...(I have a list of vintages in my collection that i like to browse in when I have guests, but of course can"t have em all). Your choice sounds great & rare...Great collection you have (you beat me on both criterias lol-btw, it's so cool to hear that Dallas Dhu is going to be revived). Hi Sertug & thanks for your comment...For the record & I mentioned it during the live but yeah indeed on my side this was rather an "educational" tasting rather than a classic "blind challenge", as I knew he couldn't try them elsehow...But, and it is a spoiler, we planned with Menno to do a "return match" soon, and this time I'll choose only whiskies from distilleries or companies he knows...About the Biersky, I'm impressed indeed & this distillery (distillerie Bertrand) does great things since 1874 spirits wise, and whisky since 2003 (a big video is coming, btw, with 3 of their single malts & 2 versions of the Biersky, the other being a cask strength rum cask one !). Artesia wise (T.O.S. Distillery) I talked a lot about it in my channel & I do recommend all the ones I tried (I have 4 different ones now). Belgian whisky wise, Menno will evoke them way better than me but I do have some Belgian Owl & tried others too, so rather recommend that single malt, in the wait of other brands to be available here...Yeah the Port Ellen was a treat also chosen for his vintage, Menno's one...Nomad wise, I had the opportunity to try a lot of Dalmore, Jura, Fettercairn & Whyte and MacKay over the years & met Richard a couple of times in shows...Besides congrats for your 7/10 on the quiz, it's a good score (& if memory serves Roy told me in private he also scored 7). Hi Benny, well, it is getting less & less free, mind you, but I don't wanna talk politics here, it'll be worse....To go back to whisky reviews, not sure I was clear enough in the video but what i meant mainly is that while criticism is tolerated, overt call for boycott is less (I finally dropped the political example that was the more obvious lately here, because the topic is too sensitive), it also depends of your fame & the mediums you use...I'm a small channel, but if I was a big one & did a call for boycott for this or that product/distillery & also promote it everywhere & several times, there is a significant possibility the producer could legitimately complain of a campaign of boycott able to make him lose both money & reputation, then it is down to advocates & courts action...In some cases the complainant was dismissed, in others justice said he was right...Cheers & yeah yesterday and today were terrible, no whisky tasting or video until it gets more bearable....

    I think one of the reasons we don't often see negative reviews, regardless of any possible regulations, is indeed the fact that we tend to be quite critical before even purchasing a bottle of whisky. So we'll have done our homework before even buying a bottle. And if there is a bottle that's not delivering, I think most of us will go out and say as much. it's like you say Greg: you can't trashtalk a whisky if you don't back it up with some arguments. As long as you're honest and truthful and emphasize it's a personal opinion, any sensible person will understand. Then let the viewers decide where the value (and truth) lies. A difficult topic to tackle, but you handled this well, bravo!

    If a whisky is disappointing for interesting reasons, then a negative review has merit. Except for the French laws, maybe. Similarly in Australia, a business can sue someone for defamatory comments. There are defences, such as truth, but it is costly to defend. But then, ‘Quid est veritas’ in whisky appreciation?

      Hi, well, if I have to do a negative review of something people are curious of, I will still do it, but, like i said, I'll have to be cautious. That said, a channel with millions of viewers might more be the target for censorship from brands than my modest one, and, as you said, tasting is subjective & down to each one's color & taste. That said N°2 obvious flaws (like a corked whisky) is for me hard to contest (i've experienced that for some whiskies & experts were agreeing with me each time). Cheers & thanks for watching !
