In this series I'm going to upgrade a Naim NAC102 by adding to the individual circuits a simple 'capacitance multiplier' / Gyrator Regulator and removing some components it replaces. The Gyrator Regulator used is available here: avondaleaudio.com/#!/Gyrator/p/626748188/category=0 Large sound quality gains can be had for very little financial outlay info here:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyrator

I had to install a NOS TDA1541a DAC because the original S1 (Single Crown) TDA1541A had expired. Sadly the camera battery run out while I was doing the DAC swap out so not much soldering action to see but some info/insight that may be of interest to some. I believe the CD3 here was just one variant of what Avondale Audio could supply at the time, I have seen others that where slightly different...

Nice. How about passing the old boards on.😉
Interesting. I’ll take those old amp and power modules off your hands if you like.😉
Great video sir! Im a new fan!
Hi Do you mind just re-listing the caps and the voltages. The lower right red cap you didn’t mention the voltage. Thanks Also i have 2 similar boards, not sure the model but layout the same except the transistors are fitted to the pcb. All the transistors test as ok including main output ones, but i know one or two could still have a fault. I’m getting high voltage pretty much every on the board ,speaker terminals and even the inputs. Both boards have same issue. Any help would be appreciated please. Thanks
My apologies, just realised the other 2 caps are both 47uf 6.3v I await your input regarding the issue i have. Thanks
700 big deal . i see 5.7k. 700 to 5.7k that makes my crossover points. Weird Audiokarma .
How do you know its an upgrade ? Do you do measurements after the modification ?
Personally, I will do listening tests of familiar music that I know really well. I’ve had the Nait 3 for 25 years and it is currently in my office system. I will instantly recognise any changes for good or for worse.
There isn't a measuring device available that can tell you how a piece of kit will sound after mods applied but I've used my ears for the past 45 years. They haven't let me down yet.
I’m just getting into modifying my Naim equipment and your videos are proving very beneficial. I have an old Nait 3 which I intend to experiment on inspired by the mods I’ve seen on your channel. I’ll do one mod at a time checking out the differences each time. So please ignore the naysayers and keep up the video production! 👍
Thanks for your vote of confidence :)..You will not be disappointed with the results in the upgrades. In part 3 I discuss the finished job and the benefits these mods have on the sound quality, which is substantial.
BS does not provide any info about FR/phase/distortions. Are they so really bad I wonder? Thanks
good effort
Two slight corrections rather than bad mouthing. Firstly, ordinary rectifiers are silicon, not ceramic. Secondly, the output of a full-wave rectifier is not a squarewave, but a 'lumpy' DC either negative or positive, ready to be smoothed into a flatter DC, by the big capacitors. I like your mod to the solder sucker - I'll try that.
Thank you for the educational experience, as always I appreciate your candid honesty with all these videos.
What's it supposed to do then why is it better?
I have this exact problem with mine. Its out of warranty so I will give this a try. Thanks for uploading this as it seems like its possibly a common issue. If it was still under warranty it would be going back to them.
What is youre favorite by sound? The Co-axial or the Pure Audio Project Trio 15 clone?
Hi What does this vr8 do?
Hi very inspiring video. Would appreciate your point of view with regards to passive crossover vs mini dsp in terms of sonics. Is the model of the Minidsp you using is 2x4hd. Thanks
Microphone amplifier more options! Line amplifiers 100-500mV ... CD player 1000mV out line.
Hello, what are the dimensions of the open baffle project. Kind regards. 😊😊😊
Yes but it's not a naim anymore if you start changing all the amplifier modules for somebody else's design becomes their design, it will loses its character doesn't it. Has lost its Valley you can't sell it as a naim nap with all those changes it's deceiving. Why did you cut the wires from the transformer you could have just flip the other board and have a mirror image the wires wouldn't need to be cut.
Is it a switching voltage regulator or linear, was the original linear or switching? I've got a Leek original 30 what do you think is best regulator to use in it? the Transformers a bit small so I'd like to probably get something bigger maybe 500 va and blitz it needs complete restoration is there any kits or information out there it will be a pain to have to go through every transistor and research it thanks sounds nice
Are the low frequency drivers in series or parallel?
11:20 29v rails, will that mean this will have more watts?
5:45 didn't the Naim Nait 1 have something strange on the balance where it only changed one channel?
@ 20:40 , Whatever you used to install those crimps onto the wire, that is not the proper crimp tool for those crimps. You need something more akin to a molex pin crimping tool, as it will properly bend the ears of the crimp over and into the wire instead of just smashing it flat, and it will do the same on the ears over the insulation on the wire. You really wouldn't even need to solder the crimp to the wire with the proper crimper.
I need to speak to Les , he mentioned he had something special in the pipeline about 2 years ago , I am guessing this is it.
Good video, thanks. I have CB Nait 2 as my 2nd system. Lovely little amp. I will do the volume pot conversion soon to Alps RK27 as well.
Sorry to hear about the DBLs.
I never really liked the DBL presentation other tan it was a 'big' sound and they did look impressive (monolithic).
@@thediyaudioimplementers1826 😆 Open baffles have big woofers too 😁
Mr. Moffett would say the same thing concerning different brands and grades of filter caps , everything has its own sound signature. Cheers mate
I'm a diyaudio implementer too. I just wanted you to know that I realize how much work it is to produce these videos. Thanks for doing them! Please don't worry about how long they are....the longer the better.
Thanks.
Look around a bit more. You can find bolt in IEC inlets.
There is another TH-camr who modifies 1541 players and DAC and in some of his videos he has copper wrapped the big capacitors and earthed ghf copper. Also has copper sinked chips too 👍
Hey, could this be build with a passive volume control and source switch as a "integrated amp" or does this SE200 config need a dedicated preamp? Thanks so much btw. I would also be interested in a SE200 SE230 comparison. Sadly only the 200 is available at this time.
Yes it could be built with a passive pre and switching in one box, I have used one with a 0 gain pre amp with great results. Switched inputs is just as many inputs as you like if the switch used can handle the no.
Hi, I don't see any SE200 module on Avondale website, How can I buy it in Italy ? many thanks ciao Sergio
They are on Avondale website £750 + shipping, duty’s taxes I believe.
I have a pair , bought them over 10 years ago for £500 , they are interesting , sound clean , but they do start to "quack" at silly volumes ... Is that 75dB at 1 watt @ 1 m ?
Yes, your about right I think it was about 77db. They aren't very efficient and they really need driving with powerful amp min 100watts SS.
You can't hear DC, one rectifier is the same as the next and it's a Schottky, not Scotch - key. It's the overhead and the reserve of a power supply that determines its voltage stability, not the diodes, schottky diodes are used in SMPS circuits where their lower Fr makes a difference, in audio they make no difference, I stopped watching after 5 minutes. Audio guys should do some basic electronics to get an understanding of what they are working with. I don't want to pick on you but this is why audio is voodoo today and getting worse.
Thanks for your observations.
Happy Christmas. Thanks for the video. Wish you well.
Do these have a similar sound signature to naim?
No not really, the Avondale SE range of amplifiers have a far superior presentation compared to Naim IMO.
How do these compare to the pass aleph j clones?
For me the SE range of amps are much more musical with texture….the Pass Clones are a bit dry sounding IMO. The SE amps were not available when I built the AJ, F5, F5T. Any of the N Pass clones are very good though.
Happy Christmas to you mate , wishes and prayers to you and your people .
What is it ncc220 class?

@@thediyaudioimplementers1826 Thanks you.
Hi, these are great videos ! Thanks for your efforts in videoing them and uploading them. i’m going to embark on my first OB DIY project and I’ve been reading quite a,to to try and understand which design i will use. May i ask which of the speakers pair do you prefer - the 3 way co-axial or the Duet 15s? Also what cross overs did you use for both ? thanks very much ,
Things have moved on since I did the TRIO videos. I still have and use the TRIOs but now use the Mark Audio MAOP 11 full range driver instead of the TB W8-18008. The MAOP is a far more detailed and musical device IMO, no xover used with this but an L Pad to -2.5db to 'blend' into the 15" bass. I plan to do a video of this update soon.
Thanks for the update ! I’m very interested in your progress so keep the videos coming ! May I ask which brand of L pad do you use and is there a software that is used with it ? Thanks !
Just found tour channel mate , nice and simple builds . I love tje mini marshal stack, back in the 80s when i was in punk banbs as a youth i had a full stack and loved it .
So.. RMS 1s or the open baffle speakers?
Ah, the RMS 1'S are superb but they cant produce the scale and presence like open baffles with 15" drivers.
@@thediyaudioimplementers1826 Active or passive rms 1's ? I am keeping my eyes pealed for another Nexus SAM40 so I can go active at some point. Are you still running the 2 way open baffle MA +15 or larger 3 driver OB?
@@johnshore3095 At present Im using the Trio clones 'passive' as I'm playing with the crossovers, trying higher tolerance components. Seems to be worth it so far , but high tolerance parts came at a high price. An active set up is so much easier to get a nice flat freq response.
Absolutely beautiful work. 👍🔊🎶 I’ve seen some crossovers that are just plain sh*t…lol. Awful parts on a cheap PCB with thin traces, crap wire and terrible binding posts. I’m sure you’re familiar…
Thank you so very much for doing this series of videos. Actually, thank you for all of your wonderful videos. Your DIY First Watt vids are spectacular, as is this one for the Trios. It baffles (pun slightly intended…) my mind why people will spend many thousands of dollars for their audio gear. With a bit of time and effort and basic understanding of electronics, you can build a truly top notch system for a fraction of the cost. It may take some time, but you’ll love your system all the more if you DIY. I do understand people who just simply want commercially available gear, but it’s much more satisfying to build something yourself. I’m in the process of putting together another tube based (12AX7’s) phono preamp using top notch parts, as I gave my other one to a friend who loved my original one. Also a line stage (also tube based / 6SN7’s), and new crossover parts for a beautiful pair of Klipsch Forte l’s I got for very little money. I also own and love my Tekton Pendragons, but also love horns, as well as open baffle Trios thanks to your fantastic videos. I’ll eventually build a First Watt clone, which work beautifully with the tube preamp, and your vids make the process so much easier. A million thanks to you again! Cheers! 🔊😊🎶🍻 - Nick
Good morning Just on the final stages of wiring my se200 modules up and would like to use the PFTE wiring....could I please ask where you sourced it from in the UK...RS components don't seem to stock it at present. Keep the videos going please you are introducing me to a brand new hobby.
I got it off eBay about 20 years ago, can’t remember who sorry. The problem is if your only building one amp you need less than 1 mtr of each colour. I’d look for an established ebayer with good feedback who lists Silver PTFE.
Many thanks for the reply....I'm off on the hunt now...🤪@@thediyaudioimplementers1826
Good morning Thoroughly enjoying your Videos.....Could I please ask If I use the NCC220 modules would it be the same build method and similar component as in you NCC200 videos.
Thanks for your feedback. Yes, the same.
Thanks.@@thediyaudioimplementers1826
where is it sold? please give me a link to the seller.
The PCB is available at the DIYaudio shop the Korg is also available there and other Suppliers, RS, Farnell, Mouser etc.
The big film cap at C1 is only needed if you have a DC coupled pre. The J sounds much better with C1 jumpered.
why don't they use silicon gaskets for preventing dust get inside between the buttons gap.
Yes, As a piece of asthetic design the colors look cool (sort of) but for the price I think it's was poorly thought out.
