  • A different way of thinking:- That's what the designer and manufacturer told me how he devised this speaker.
These special speakers were never made in any huge numbers in fact no more than 30 pairs where produced over 20 odd years ago. They are quite amazing in design and acoustically superb not to mention the engineering prowess needed to manufacturer but Mr Les Wolstenholme of Avondale Audio did just that.

I'm kicking myself now, because a pair of these was sitting in the room at Avondale Towers when I visited Les a few years back. Because they look, without closer inspection, like a pair of ordinary standmounts, and we were talking about other things, I never realised how special the design is. My jaw hit the floor when I saw the measurements for those tiny speakers - flat to 30Hz! I've said it before, and now I mean it doubly - Les is a very clever guy.

At last, another real man who doesn't shy away from pronouncing "titanium" correctly, rather than saying, "tie-tanium" instead.

I have a pair , bought them over 10 years ago for £500 , they are interesting , sound clean , but they do start to "quack" at silly volumes ... Is that 75dB at 1 watt @ 1 m ?

Yes, your about right I think it was about 77db. They aren't very efficient and they really need driving with powerful amp min 100watts SS.

So.. RMS 1s or the open baffle speakers?

Ah, the RMS 1'S are superb but they cant produce the scale and presence like open baffles with 15" drivers.

Active or passive rms 1's ?
I am keeping my eyes pealed for another Nexus SAM40 so I can go active at some point.
Are you still running the 2 way open baffle MA +15 or larger 3 driver OB?

@@johnshore3095 At present Im using the Trio clones 'passive' as I'm playing with the crossovers, trying higher tolerance components. Seems to be worth it so far , but high tolerance parts came at a high price. An active set up is so much easier to get a nice flat freq response.
