I Just Bought a $400 Tile Blade!! Was it Worth it??
I honestly can't believe I actually paid $411.04 for a Monolit Glass Blade. I know glass blades cost more than the average tile blade, but never did I ever think I would pay this much for 1 blade.
The saying "There's nothing like the right tool for the job" is the main reason I decided to purchase this blade. I had to cut a unique shaped tile, that was a blend of Mirrored Glass & Marble. If you've ever cut mirrored glass, you know that any imperfection in the cut WILL BE VISIBLE, especially when grouted. To make things even more challenging, this glass was 1/2" thick. I had another glass tile blade which I loved, but it simply wasn't doing the job with this tile.
I remembered my friends at San Diego Marble & Tile mentioning a glass blade that is unrivaled, so I decided to give it a try to make this project come out amazing.
The blade is the Monolit CPV250. I know Monolit is a reputable brand, so that gave me some purchasing confidence.
I can honestly say, that I was greatly impressed with this blade. It cut way faster & cleaner than I imagined. The cuts on this mirrored glass tile, literally came out PERFECT! The cut edge was so clean, that I didn't even need to smooth the edges. One of the greatest things that impressed me about this blade was that I didn't need to cut the glass tile upside down. Normally you would need to cut glass tile upside down to prevent the paper backing from tearing with the cut, but this blade cut so clean, even when I cut it right side up.
Yes, I wish it didn't cost so much, but for this project it was the perfect tool for the job. The good news is, I did find it on Amazon for $100 cheaper! Here's my Amazon Affiliate Link for the blade:

Love the tips, but the camera movements were messing with my vertigo 😵💫
Yea, I used to strap a camera on me... but didn't like all the movement either🤦♂️... I've since changed the way I film 👍
Solid video. One question though. What is the minimum wet tile saw one could use to cut these properly? I tried with a very basic wet tile saw and that didn't work!
Great question. I would highly recommend the saw I'm using in the video. It's the 7" Rigid saw from Home Depot. It's small, lightweight, and doesn't cost too much. I think I bought mine on sale for $300. It can handle most projects. If you are only tiling a small project, Home Depot does rent out tile saws as well👍
This is gold, thank you sir
Glad you enjoyed it!
It works just fine. What I do is roll on a thinner mastic called " red guard " then I use thin set.
@SuperVoltmaster Reguard is a waterproofing/ Anti-Fracture Membrane. Mastic, like I'm using in this video is an adhesive that would replace thinset 👍
what size (MM) of spacer you use ?
@gaurav-chauhan I prefer 0.79 mm but will use 1.57mm like this video
Doesn’t sag either. I use in non wet areas.
@ChazzMasterz true.. great point! 💯
If I have to cut a tile to fit vertically should it be the lowest one or the tallest (for the side of a kitchen island)? And how much time do I have to work with this thin set?
Also why couldn’t you use the wall as the plum line and start from there?
If it's a backsplash I usually cut the top piece, so that I start with a full tile on the bottom👍. The bucket life for this thinset isn't the best, so I'd say only make what you can use in 2 hours.
I could use the wall as a plumb line since I mud floated it, and it's plumb... but it's too many tiles across. I'd rather have the plumb line in the center so it's less tiles to the left and right of it. 👍
Got it. Thank you for the reply. Wish me luck.
@allenmontesino7450 you got this bro💪💯. Email me if you have any others questions 👍
Has anyone been able to find this product in the big box stores? Seems like Home Depot offers a variant called 'SimpleGrout' from the same manufacturer ("Custom Building Products") for about half the price of Prism SCG Grout. Makes me wonder if it's the same product as Prism SCG Grout, with a different label?
@jasonbengel Simple Grout has been around awhile, it's premixed, but doesn't offer the benefits of Prism SCG. For now, you'd have to go to a tile supply to buy Prism SCG 👍
Dewalt hand held tile saw…. Is all I have to say. - get one
Now I can cut with 2 hands yay
🤣💯💯
I'm waiting for the inevitable incoming lawsuits due to electrocution
@@weapwnx1077 I was actually concerned about that as well. The tool worked great, but I did have to wipe it down from the mist moisture 👍
What tile saw is that
@TheRealDill93 that's the Rubi Dt-10in Max 👍 I have another video highlighting it, if you wanted to see it's benefits 👌
@@HowToTileLikeaPro thanks man
And number 6...a tool that can't get wet. Brilliant
@zach934 that did concern me while cutting. Even if it's not directly spraying toward the tool, the overspray was significant even to have to wipe it down. Wondering if the guard would've prevented overspray🤷♂️
@@HowToTileLikeaPro i think it would help.
Это для аккамуляторной ушм, но не для сетевой😢
Grabo is fairly expensive... would a cheaper one suffice? Thank you for the tips and great video sir!
@BigPappaLos The Grabo definitely isn't cheap, but I love how safe it is. The main feature that sold me was that it automatically turns back on if it starts to lose suction👍. Not sure about other brands, but kinda scary trusting a tool with a heavy tile, so I chose to go with the Grabo👌
If I may, what's your reasons for not using an uncoupling membrane? I'm about to do a whole 1st floor and I'm trying to get as much info as possible. My home is 20 years old and concrete slab is super flat. Only part I have to level is the kitchen and some parts that have some thinset. Thank you.
How do you plug the weep holes ?
After the water test, I attach the 2nd part of the clamping drain, then cover the weep holes with small pieces of tile👍
@@HowToTileLikeaProthanks for the response and knowledge but I meant how do you plug the weep holes to do the water test ? Bc I had a hot mop done and then i couldn't water test it bc of the weep holes. I have a plug for the drain but not for the weep holes. I hope that makes sense Mastro
@j.w.r.i2910 I get what your saying now. But if you plug the drain low enough, you don't have to worry about the weep holes. The weep holes are on the top part of the drain connection, that ultimately lead to the regular drain hole...so you plug the drain hole low enough, there's no issue there. I hope that makes sense 👍
@@HowToTileLikeaProoh I understand, is there a specific plug I need or that you recommend?
You're awesome sauce!! This is SUPER helpful and you do amazing work, Sir!! Thanks so much for taking the time to share this with us!! 💪🙌🎉
Thanks a million for that! I'm grateful the video was helpful 🙌
CUSTOM does recommend sealing natural stones before any grouting
3 days (72 hrs) before water exposure
It really IS the easiest grout to use....... PERIOD!
@@fredzimmer7295 💯💯👌
Why would you make it so you shower don’t drain????
@@tonytomassoni4370 of course the shower drains🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Good advise for whom planning to tile round door steps.
First I want to say what an awesome video and the following information that I have I don’t want it to be considered negative or condescending, but I do have a suggestion. Considering the radius and circle, and how true and perfectly round it is, wouldn’t it be wise to create a jig where you would be able to set up the three pieces of porcelain tiles in a row with spacers in between and then after calculating one row and the angle of cuts by the line between You could put this J piece of cardboard or a piece of wood but that shape right over the top of those three pieces score your line maybe by using a scowl and not a clay marker and you could zip through all of your pieces pretty quickly. Above all, thank you for the video incredibly awesome use of angles and I love your theory. Do it right or do it twice? I’m not certain if those were the words that you had used, but I can tell that you care about your product, the end result and the customer satisfaction and that’s the way each and every Contractor subcontractor anybody that works in a construction field should be doing their job. Myself I am a handyman that likes to do everything from drywall to snow removal to tile with paint and honestly anything I can fix. I love making things right. Got into fixing my kids toys and have had great success with remote control cars all the way to swapping out thermal conditioning units on PlayStation and installing antennas for better range. Whenever I do a job for anyone, my principal is I want them to feel like they got value out of the experience and that they’re satisfied with the results. I don’t get into a job looking just to make money and sometimes upfront I won’t charge for my time considering consultation or education about something that I’m familiar with. I feel like if that person decides to choose me for the task we will be way more likely to come to an agreement. Thanks for the awesome video here it’s fire. 🔥
@brasha78 Thank you for the well thought out comment 👌. And yes, your theory with a jig would work if this fountain was a perfect circle. If I had built it from the ground up, that would have been the easiest method. But since I tiled around an existing fountain, I found this to be the easiest method. Though it may be hard to see in the video, many of the cuts are drastically different from each other, which makes this method really shine 👍
yeah no risk of silicosis with triton board and its lighter

I couldn't reply on your last video so I'm doing it on this one. How do you plug the weep holes up when water testing ?
Nice job. Thank you. What wetsaw is it? Is it great for work? Thank you.
@alexbull5838 Thanks, is the 7" Rigid Saw. It's lightweight, small for tight work spaces, and cuts up to 2' tile. It's around $300 and can handle daily use👍
Thank you brother. I second this bc I worked on Rigid 10' and it was awesome except maybe she splashed water right in my eyes😅

Sick I have that same one just smaller. For 12x12. My pops has had it for about 30 years or so
That's awesome!! Vintage tools 💯💯💪
that's so fucking sick
Right!?! I like the look of it🤣👍👍
Funny In The Amazon They Putted “For Ceramic” Because They Know After You Cut A Few Tiles The Diamond Wheel Not Cutting Anymore, That Is Why They Have A Poor Customer Reviews. Amén.
Professionals know that there are different cutting wheels for different cutting materials, such as glass, ceramic, & porcelain. I bought the tungsten cutting wheel for hard porcelain 2 1/2 years ago, and I still use it to this day👍.
Yes they are. I learnt how to lay 6x3 and 3x3 without them first. Clips don’t substitute both skill and surface prep. And readers will hate this, but if you can’t lay tiles without clips and can’t screed you’re not a tiler, you’re a handyman
🤣🤣 it is true though, The clips are not fail proof👍. Learning to install without them, will allow you to install faster, with them👌
Thanks a lot. This helped out on my project I did at home. Peace and blessings 🙌🏽💯🤙🏽
So grateful it was helpful to you💯💯
So they’re completely reusable?
The yellow wedges are reusable, the clear tabs, are one use only👍
What a waste
It’s not a waste, it’s also not a time saver like he says. It creates friction so the tiles in wet mortar don’t move around or go out of place once they are set and are a good gauge for making tiles completely level with one another at the joint.
Can you add a complete row of accents to an existing shower?
Yes, that's actually easier to do than the procedure in this video👍
😊😊😊😊
This is so helpful and easy to follow. Thank you!
🙌🙌🙌
Just begging to lose some digits
There is no risk of losing digits on a tile saw. The blade has no teeth. You obviously don’t do tile.
Are you in Florida? Would love to hire you if you are!
Awww, unfortunately I'm in San Diego 🫤...I have friends I can recommend that are in Florida if you need an installer though👍
Update: I've stopped using cement board products like Durock, Hardibacker and Triton and have since switched to using Johns Manville GoBoard. Used it on my last two jobs. It's way lighter that any cement board products, cuts super easy with a razor knife, very easy to work with and it's 100% Waterproof. Granted it's more expensive than the cement board products but it's ease of use and no waterproofing required makes up for the difference in price. Depending on the individual, the only downside might be the suggestion to wear gloves since GoBoard is fiberglass coated which can lead to itchy skin or little fiber glass slivers on your hands. That said, I've since handled over 60 sheets without gloves and have only had one sliver.
Good to know👍 I've heard of GoBoard, but haven't tried it yet. The Fiberglass aspect sounds unattractive... but I'll look into it👌
montolit dna blades are the best
I'm looking forward to trying those! I've heard they cut slow though...did you find that to be true?
Can you use this for glass subway tile
Absolutely, just don't get to rough with it...as with any Grout with glass tile👍
True Story... My client is an architect an actually made drawings of the tile layout and taped it to the wall. He did this for each shower, for the fireplace, and the kitchen splash. Unfortunately, I installed it staggered because the upstairs area was staggered, not realizing until THE NEXT DAY that the splash was supposed to be a straight layout 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️. When my client brought it to my attention the next morning, I couldn't believe I missed that detail, even though the drawings were taped to the wall!🤣🤦♂️. Fortunately for me, my clients said they liked it better staggered....I insisted that I would change it and install it the way they originally desired, but they insisted that I leave it, saying they honestly liked it better. Even the pro's make mistakes.... the only difference is when Pro's make mistakes, they end up being better than the original plan! 💯🔥 As I was laughing at myself for installing it wrong, and my clients ended up liking it... the 1st thing that came to my mind was @davidgoggins saying "you don't know me Son!" So here's my Goggins edit🤣🤣💯.
