Alta Via 1 - An eight day hike in the Dolomites, Italy
Alta Via 1 is the most popular of all the ‘high routes’ in the Dolomites.
Of all the Alta via trails, hiking Alta Via 1 is the easiest with no via ferrata but also the busiest option.
We did a variant of the standard route: Lago di Braies to Listolade which was 75km spread over 8 days.
The highest point reached was Rifugio Lagazuoi situated at 2,752m (9,029ft).
The height gain on our variant was around 5000m (16,404ft).

The Wangapeka Track - Rain, hail, snow and flooded side-streams!
มุมมอง 2.7K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Wangapeka track crosses Kahurangi National Park, from West Coast near Karamea to the Waimea Basin in the east. It crosses two saddles, each of over 1,000 m, and travels through the beautiful beech-forested valleys of the Little Wanganui, Taipo, Karamea and Wangapeka rivers. There is little traffic from Helicopter Flat hut to the west coast where the track is graded as a route. There are war...
A tramp along the Red Hills Ridge - Richmond Range, Nelson
มุมมอง 4136 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Red Hills in the Richmond Range are an outcropping of ultramafic rocks, which are a striking red colour and rich in minerals containing iron and magnesium. They form poor soils and support little vegetation. These rocks are highly abrasive and I'd recommend you wear old footwear and gloves if travelling in the area. Similar rocks are found on the southern West Coast, some 480 km away - move...
A fine weather window - Albert Burn to East Matukituki
มุมมอง 7636 หลายเดือนก่อน
A fine weather window gave us a great opportunity to spend longer than expected above the bush line avoiding the sandflies and enjoying the fabulous views! We had given ourselves plenty of lay days if the weather wasn't great which made for a very relaxed, laid back trip when we stuck this great weather window. A heavy dump of snow earlier in the week validated us carrying crampons & ice axes b...

Auckland Tramping Club Interim Trip - March 2024 If the stars aligned the plan was to spend as much time as possible on the tops of the Ella range, Spenser mountains and Zampa tops. Unfortunately they weren't and we spent the majority of our time tramping along the valley floor waiting for the heavy dump of snow to melt from day three. Once that started to melt we had high winds on the tops whi...
Kahurangi Keepers House - A great west coast beach walk
มุมมอง 4238 หลายเดือนก่อน
Most of our group of twenty from the Waimea Tramping club had booked early for this trip as the logistics are an time consuming and its years between trips. The Kahurangi Keepers House can be reached after a 3-4 hour, 10km beach walk along a fabulous stretch of the west coast 45km south of Farewell Spit. The 25 bunk Keepers house has a good sized Kitchen and dining area with plenty of space to ...

Wow, what a great trip, and a great video showing it!
Thanks, a fabulous area to explore.
""Canada"" _ _ goosey
Great vid, great track!
Thanks, I am lucky its regular local ride for me!
Another great video!
Thanks for the great feedback 🙂
Where are your gaiters, its part of our national dress code?
Very happy to follow the local custom on their great trails....
Incredible landscapes! Your video really captures the beauty of these scenes. Thanks for sharing such amazing content! 👍18
Thanks. With such spectacular terrain it made my job fairly easy.
Just amazing views and the colours of the lakes…. ❤
Thanks, colours a bit washed out during the day , much better in the early morning and evenings.
Thank you for this great video ,It brings back some great memories
Thanks Tony. Its good to refresh the memory on historic trips.
Hi thanks for the great video. These bring back great memories .
@@tonycraib5939 Thanks. A great area to explore.
Good video guys. Brought back some memories of my tramp back in 1976 although some of the huts have changed. It is not as well known as the Heaphy but a great trip nonetheless
Wonderful scenery, despite the rain. Great video.
Thanks. its an interesting area.
Is the track to the Valley of the Trolls easy to spot after Harris Saddle and easy to get down to the lake for a swim?
It’s easily seen from the track and provides easy access to the lake edge.
Epic trip and great video, thanks Pete. Seems ponchos ruled and being able to call helicpoter was a great option.
Having access to an Inreach and someone to organise things at the other end does provide much more options.
Nicely curated, gosh how many times do you hear about those ponchos being more effective than raincoats!
Ponchos are well suited to tracked below the bushline travel. ln more open tracks I velcroed the front up for better ventilation to reduce condensation. Worked for me.
@@Getoutdoorsnz- can I ask where you bought your nylon poncho? Brand? Sounds like it’s a great piece of gear to carry. Thank you.
Nice information and hike. Thank you for sharing. Not the best weather, but nice to see how the weather can be and not always the nice shiny weather 🙂Have a great day Like #47
Thanks for watching!
Good to see the Wangapeka again. One of my favourite areas that I tramped and hunted while training at the nearby woody school in Golden Downs State Forest. In June 76 a group of us were tasked with cutting the track from Stag Flat back out to the Wangapeka Road. It rained every day for three weeks. We based ourselves at the original Trevor Carter hut which was in a good clearing on the true left near the Taipo/Karamea confluence. Our work trip was lead by Peter Bell who was the farmer/ranger at the end of the road. Cecil was in his camp on the way out. I see they have put the new one where the old Lunar Hut was. The hut facilities sure look a lot better than what we had. But the track west of Helicopter has become a bit of a mess. I went as far as Brough's tabernacle site in June 2016 for a tiki tour.
Thanks, always good to get a bit of history of what used to take place.
That was an epic four day hike.
Well done Pete and ATC team! It was reminiscing for us. I don't want to do the western side of the Wangapeka track again ever. It was overgrown and difficult enough 5 years ago. It's good to know that the Belltown hut has been replaced though. It sure needed to be. It's track maintenance that's required in there now 😏
As I'm used to off track I didn't find it too bad for an infrequently used route. That said some others did.
great up load mate!
Thanks David,
Wow! Thanks for sharing. That one's on my bucket list but definitely in a better forecast. Good call on the chopper. 👍
Thanks 👍
Thanks for the video, have been wondering about the track condition! Nice that the huts had firewood for you. Curious how you were able to call the chopper? A satellite phone? Will check out your other videos
Glad you liked it. We used an Inreach 4 comms.
Well done to the ATC crew and another great video & trip blog Pete, what an epic journey across the Wangapeka wilderness.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks Peter. Great video, stunning views and sounds like a great tramp.
Thanks Colin, yes interesting higher up the ridgeline.
Great walk in the right weather, stunning views all round. Well worth the effort, keeping fit, on those legs, a must............
Thanks Robin
Took that trip in 96, but in 2 days (youth - more about speed than enjoying... :) ) - through Tarn Col. I currently plan to go back in December to try to find the parts of my soul, that never followed me home... Lovely video - thx!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Superb video Pete! Just like being there ...
Dennis-You'll be back in next years epics
Amazing video. Thank you for sharing. 👍8
Thanks, glad you liked it....
Some amazing scenery back there, have added to the list!
The amazing landscape gives you plenty of options for some stunning shots.
What a great trip, weather behaved, with a few excerps from the sandfly ensemble! Well negotited with some gorgeous camps. I knew Jack Skinner that found the Bivouac, Paul Powel, in the mix. See you next time.............Robin Smith
Thanks Robin, a great area....
Wow cool trip. I used to live in Makarora and Albert Burn was always on my bucket list. So cool to see this. Such great countryside.
Thanks. A fab area of the country.
What a scenery! This is really a great video 🙂👍
Thanks. Lucky us spending days enjoying those viewx.
Wow! Incredible footage, great narration and tidy edit. Thanks for bringing us along for the journey. What an amazing achievement.
Thanks Paul for the great feedback, next one out in a few days.
Greetings from Canada. Very surprised that Canadian Geese fly to NZ. Beautiful video. Thank you for sharing. Subd & 👍16
Hi. I suspect they were brought here for some reason & are now pests like many other introduced species.
Nice video, big country big tramp, I used to live in South Auckland years ago and be part of the South Auckland Tramping club down here now living the dream near Rangiora which has a tramping club. Don't tramp now due to My knees but really nice to see your adventures online, Thankyou.
Incredible ! That expédition ! Bravo....
Thanks for this great video. I am thinking of doing the tramp solo but just wondering about transport, and may have to walk the connecting road in between. Was it riddled with sandflies? And were gaiters necessary? Thanks, Aileen
Hi Aileen. We had two vehicles and left one at either end. It is probably safer to leave your vehicle a Cass and possibly hitch/walk back. Sandflies, don't remember them been too bad. Gaiters were useful but not necessary as the track wasn't overgrown. Enjoy
@@GetoutdoorsnzThanks!
Enjoyed your video, thanks. Looking to do this walk Monday, nice to get an idea of the recent track conditions. Cheers.
This is exceptionally well done in every respect - and a great route. Thank you.
Thanks. It was a great trip with fabulous varied terrain.
What kind of 360 camera are you using? looks awesome

Thanks for this video. the guide and the map markings are really helpful. we plan to go and camp at the valley of trolls this weekend. You just gained a new subscriber!
Thanks John, if the wind is low I would also recommend camping on the east of Lake Wilson.

Nice vid, I'm looking at doing it this weekend. How did your battery go?
620wh battery on Tour for whole trip - had 20% left at finish. Have fun, great ride
Just found your channel... absolutely brilliant. Thanks!
Thanks Steve, much appreciated.
Nice video snapshot, do you recall if there is any streams up there to top up drinking water? I'm planning on a walk up there this summer.
Hi. The road up followed a spur so nothing on the way up or down. Didn't see any tarns up on the tops so I wouldn't count on anything. You also need to get permission to cross private land , farmer name David James, don't have any contact details.
All good, I have his contact details. I'll just take a 3 litre hydration pack with me for the day. Thanks@@Getoutdoorsnz
