    Thank you for reacting to the Starlight by Helloween. My goal is to give you Helloween songs from the beginning of their career. I plan to give you music in chronological order, so that you may recognize how the started and how they developed until today. The Evolution of Helloween. You will hear how old school Helloween developed to a modern metal band without leaving their roots.
    I begin with their first album which is a mini album. On this album their sound in pretty raw and have demo quality. My goal is to introduce you to the Kai Hansen era first which consist of the first two albums. Then, I will give you some Michael Kiske era Helloween, before I move on to modern Helloween. It will be quite a journey, haha.

    • @BradAlenaMetalReactions

      Aaah I see. I do like these chronological journeys - like how we're doing Tool. When I listen to music on my own, I almost always listen chronologically. Looking forward to it!

      @@BradAlenaMetalReactions I think you will like modern Helloween more, but there might still be a song from old school Helloween. They are like Rush. Rush started with 70s hard rock then moved on to Progressive Rock and then New Wave without leaving their roots or Rush sound. For sure, I will give you Helloween from each decade.
      In the beginning, Helloween had some punk vibes in their music.

      @@BradAlenaMetalReactions Helloween was my first metal band. They were for me like a bridge from regular traditional heavy metal to speed metal, thrash metal etc.
      There are heavier and faster song by Helloween. I didn't want to give you their fastest and thrashiest songs, because I wasn't sure how much speed Alena could handle.
      Starlight is the opening track on their first album and a good start. Helloween is a very versatile band. They aren't a genre band. They don't stick to a specific genre. Helloween play Heavy Metal, Speed Metal, Power Metal, sometimes Thrash. They even recorded ballads, acoustic songs, pop rock etc.
      The reason I like metal/hard n heavy in the first place is the different styles. It is as versatile as metal: Platinum, Iron, Mercury, and plutonium are all metal, but they are totally different.

    • @BradAlenaMetalReactions

      Interesting, I didn't know they had so much variety to them. I think you made a good choice in starting from the beginning though :)

    By the way, Helloween is often considered the pioneers of the subgenre "power metal". So many bands would not be around if not for them (and Iron Maiden).

      "often considered". You mean actually considered by those who know anything about anything. Helloween was the pioneer of power metal. Just like Black Sabbath started doom metal and metal in general.

    This is such a strage first song recommendation from Helloween. But then, it was a patreon request. Helloween's trademark is when you have guitar harmonics, where three guitars sync up in solos as well as a few bass slaps. Helloween's beginnings tend to be rather funny... "I want out" video is just hilarious in its utter nonsense. Would recommend songs from Michael Kiske era of Helloween. For an introduction song, I'd say "Eagle Fly free" is great. His singing range is rather high, and the songs sound a lot more fun. Look forward to you both checking out these older era bands as well from time to time :) For a similar sounding band, you could also check Stratovarius.

      Thanks Magnus - and thanks for pointing out to look out for the guitar harmonics :)

  • @BareThomas84
    @BareThomas84 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I freaking love Helloween, and urge you to do more! They've had three different singers in their history, this was their first. But all three are amazing in their own ways. And, currently, all three of them are in the band together!
    I suggest Eagle Fly Free, I Want Out, or Where the Rain Grows

    • @BradAlenaMetalReactions
      @BradAlenaMetalReactions  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Woah all 3 together? Haha that's crazy! So they're all 3 still doing vocals?

    • @BareThomas84
      @BareThomas84 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BradAlenaMetalReactions the vocalist you heard in this song doesn't sing much, he's one of the guitarists. But the other two share the vocal duties; it depends on the song.
      They all reunited in 2016, and are almost done working on their first album together. They did release a song a couple years ago with all three singing. The lyrics reference old songs of theirs and really is a masterpiece for longtime fans to hear. That song is called Pumpkins United.

    Nice love me some good old Helloween :) As someone else said, this is a weird choice to start with them, probably to witness the birth of speed/power metal, but later stuff is way more "refined". You should definitely check something from the Keepers era with Kiske on vocals, like Eagle Fly Free, Halloween or Keeper of the Seven Keys.

    You call Starlight by Helloween Rock Music. If this song is rock music then Iron Maiden plays pop rock, Metallica plays punk rock, Judas Priest can then be classified as Adult Contemporary while AC/DC play Lullabies/Children's Music.

      I hope my remark wasn't viewed as a criticism or insulting. It wasn't meant to be. Genres and sub-genres can be really tricky and I've witnessed many an argument over them haha :D In this particular case, I think it could just be a matter of age difference and what music we grew up with. When I said "rock", I probably should have referred to "hard rock" specifically. If I think of a song like "All My Life" by Foo Fighters - that's a bit of a reference point for me. It was my favourite song at one point in high school. That song I'd consider rock, not metal. Probably hard rock though? It's just one example of many, but I find that song to be heavier (or at least comparably heavy) to a lot of metal from the '80s and earlier. Not in all areas. I mean it doesn't have the same fast and technical guitar solos as the early metal bands for example. But (whether due to technological improvements or just music evolution) the actual guitar tones and distortion in "All My Life" feel heavier than classic metal - at least to me. And when I add in that the metal I was listening to at the time was early Slipknot for example, then I think it helps explain why - for me at least - older metal felt a lot closer to the hard rock of some of the heavier Foo Fighter songs than it did to something like early Slipknot.
      I hope that helps provide a bit more context. Again, it wasn't meant to be a criticism. I was actually surprised and impressed by how fast and technical Starlight was. My exposure to older metal is pretty limited, so I'm actually really looking forward to exploring it and filling in my knowledge gaps. You'll see that coming up, some of the other Patrons have also requested some older metal, so we'll be getting exposure to some other bands, in addition to Helloween.

    I was pretty young when this came out, but I remember when I first heard about this band ('89 or so) they were very controversial here in the US *just* because they had the word "hell" in their name!
    In many regards, we've come a long way since then. In other regards... we haven't. ☹️

    • @BradAlenaMetalReactions
      @BradAlenaMetalReactions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Sean, I was still wondering about that. It's so strange for me now looking back at that era of "controversial" music. I mean they're literally telling people "don't do drugs"! :D

    • @SeanD313
      @SeanD313 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BradAlenaMetalReactions one would think a message like "drugs are bad" would be welcomed, but people would actually have to hear it to get the message. Over here, a band's name is enough to warrant public condemnation before anyone hears what they have to say... it's happened numerous times, unfortunately. It happened with Judas Priest - (some) people heard the name only, and from that concluded Rob & Co were satanists.
      I suppose it stems from us being a country founded by puritans.

    • @BradAlenaMetalReactions
      @BradAlenaMetalReactions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it's an issue in many part of the world really. Devil Driver was supposed to play in South Africa but because of the name, they couldn't come. Barely any big international bands would come over, so that was really disappointing!

    I hate Helloween before 1994 and this is my favorite band of all time. Pick any song from Master of The Rings, Time of the Oath or The Dark Ride. You will notice the difference. Before that they had a clumsy experimental sound, and although the vocalist had an outstanding vocal range, the compositions were awful.
