Wild Bike Camper
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 ก.ค. 2023
A boring guy on his bike, doing mildly interesting things.
This channel is an easy going mixture of camping, cycling, nature / animals, heritage railways....and a bit of history.
I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing here and not sure if I'm cut out for this TH-cam game - but enjoying the journey and learning how to edit (again).

A Very Wild Camp - On the eve of Storm Lilian
I travelled to Aberthaw in South Wales, and pitched up my tarp on the coast - the evening before Storm Lilian swept over the UK.

Camping in Builth Wells - Royal Welsh Show
I enjoyed the ride end to end - I know the area well so it was nice to see it from your perspective. Llanthony and the Vale of Ewyas is fantastic but I love Gospel Pass and the views the other way too. Did you know that's where they filmed the opening sequence of American Werewolf In London? Interesting trivia for you. Well, a good time had at the camp site - n ice to get a shower. All the best. Mark
It was an amazing experience - and I got very lucky with the weather considering. I'd love to camp in Llanthony for a few nights in the summer. I didn't know that...it's not as bleak as some Welsh road passes...! Yes - that campsite was amazing - extremely highly recommended - they washed my clothes too.
@@WildBikeCamper Good to hear it was amazing - that's all we can ask for - campsite noted.
Nice one - you pulled that one out of the hat. I like it when we're put on the spot and have to find a pitch at the last. The last time I did that I camped to the rear of Powys council offices. I too was gone without leaving a trace. Thank you landlord. Ha ha! You had a nice night although you could have done with more sleep. Still, nature worked its magic as did the tea in the morning. Good going. All the best. Mark
I never have enough sleep on most of my adventures sadly. I'm just too wired to fully relax, regardless of how tired I am. Steak was good though...
@@WildBikeCamper Sorry to hear about the sleep situation. Good to hear of the stake.
Ah sweet camp bro. A nice ride in and what looked to be an out of the way spot. The lanb turned out awesome - I could taste that from here (Hereford). You were patient in the spot roast but worth the wait. Well, good going. A new subscriber on account of the camp amid the Wye. All the best. Mark
Hi there - thanks very much for the kind comment and sub. I love the Wye Valley - shame I can only access it 6 months a year.
@@WildBikeCamper A pleasure. Yeah, it's a great spot.
What a relaxing camp!
Yes - it worked out far better than expected, this one.
Literally woke up this morning thinking about a wild camp at margam Park 😮!!! I can see it from my living room window, before I lost my wife me and our family used to go there almost weekly, great video, can't believe this was just recommended after what I woke up thinking about this morning! Subbed 😊
Your troubles aside, it looked a cracking place for a camp! Plus characterful pubs nearby always add to the experience. Might have a look there myself before too long (I'm Bristol based so quite near). I've just done a windy weeks hiking and wild camping around the Pembrokeshire coast with a bivvy and a tarp, though gave up on the tarp after the first night as it was flapping too much!
I've flat camped under tarps in the past, so I knew that as long as my heavy duty pegs held - which most did - I'd be fine. It was actually quite cosy under there! Just wet in a few places, and so bloody noisy! Respect to you for doing a bivvy - I hate being that enclosed. Pembrokeshire is on my list of places to camp - near Tenby being first. Highly recommend visiting *all* the pubs in Aberthaw and Rhoose - my fav though is of course the Anchor...
A great video and a great adventure. The Pyramid configuration is best for windy conditions when using a tarp, peg two corners out nice and taut then bring the other two corners together and peg those down and put your pole in the center. There will only be a narrow slit for you to enter but it is the most stable set up for those conditions, lots of videos on YT showing how. That was a very nice, old pub. Keep on Wild Bike Camping. 👍
Unfortunately, by the time I had fought my way through the trail and arrived at my pitch, I could barely see what I was doing, and the wind was making things difficult already. I had to do the quickest thing I could think of - peg out all the sides as best I could and hope the poles stayed in place. A pyramid - especially with the 4.5 x 3 - would have taken longer and I would not have had a clue if I was doing it right anyway without the YT guidance. Appreciate your advice and view though - it's all a learning experience.
@@WildBikeCamper Thanks for the reply 👍
Excellent… the best video you’ve done for a while. Well done! 👍
And all I had to do was have a difficult journey and a sleepless night to achieve it!😅 You might find the next few videos very dull in comparison! 😉
Was starting to get a bit concerned for you there, Cuz, you did well in a tricky situation. Have to agree with a previous comment about pouring some of that 6.5% cider over the pork steaks, but drinking it all probably gave you the headache. You certainly get around a bit, would a slightly heavier material tent be something to think about in the future, I appreciate there would be a weight issue, but might be better in the situation you found yourself in last night. Keep 'em coming mate 💪💪💪
I was concerned for myself 😆 I didn't even finish the bottle...only had half! Combination of stress, noise, and booze I reckon. I'm pushing the limit of what I can carry most trips...so can't get a heavier (and usually expensive tent) at present. Doing the tarp again will be fine I think. I'm convinced a guy line would have held. I'll test the theory on the next storm camp. 😉
Your doing dramatic action videos now then ? Sorry about your tarp but at least you got to have dinner first, i like your new stove, and i would have put a good measure of that cider in with the pork to help it cook. I think i would have rolled myself up in the tarp and kept myself low and protected. Liked that pub by the way and the rainbow 🌈. Didn't realise Cardiff airport was that small. Great video and thanks for sharing 👏 👋
😄 I thought seeing as every other camper has done one...why not? I wasn't planning on the drama...but I had a feeling all day something would go wrong. Still...it was worth it for having the coast to myself and the best rainbow I've ever seen. I can repair the tarp too. Great idea with the cider...I wish I had done it now!!! Next time! Both pubs are really lovely but I couldn't film in the first. Yep...it's pretty small...and a push calling it Cardiff. But the transport links are pretty good. Thanks for the view.
Classic Roughing It. I say at times '' Well at least I've learnt something ''. What that learnt something is, is entirely guest work. I wonder if its, I've learnt my lesson. Whatever that is, you passed.
It has also given me the confidence to try another coastal tarp camp in an even stronger storm in the future 💪 😄
Flapping hell mate that must have been an experience. Good to see you’re ok. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us 🚵🏕️🚊
It's been a long time since I had a problem with a camp. To be honest...I'd rather deal with nature in all its glory than encounter a stranger in the woods 😁 Thanks for watching!
Chwarae teg! I think you did the only thing you could with that situation and just drop the tarp and hunker down! The upside was a stunning sunrise and rainbows. Thank you for sharing your (mis)adventures! 😊🏴
There was nothing else I could think of doing - and it worked. At least I stayed mainly dry and wasn't cold at all!
That was wild indeed. Did you know the storm was coming? I've been through a few in a tent and it really isn't nice when it's dark.
Yes, I knew the storm was on the way - but the forecast was for the worst of it to hit North Wales/England. If I had put a guy line up instead, I'd probably not have had a problem.
looking forward to this one. last night a tree branch fell onto my ten then woke up this morning to a bull!
Oh dear! Hope nothing was damaged or charged at!

You got off lightly it seems. From one camper to another....I suggest scouting the field for cattle before pitching! 🐂🐄🐎

Great video but that bridge is the second severn crossing-the first is at Chepstow
Ahh damnit! You'd think I'd know the difference between them after all these years! Thank you for pointing out my error!!!
No worries, I only know as I can see the old one from mu house
Stupid thing is...I've crossed both hundreds of times...but I still get them mixed up. I get Caldicot and Chepstow mixed up too despite knowing them well. Old man brain fog 😁
I know that fog! Caldicot’s flat, Chepstow all hills lol. Some great camp spots all over that area. I will keep an eye out for you and say hello (might even buy you a beer)
I want to camp at Black Rock (or nearby) but there's always too many people wandering about. Might try in the winter...
Looking forward to the upcoming video. Looks exciting
I'll be honest and say it's probably far less exciting than I make it look. But isn't that what all trailers do? Haha! 😉
Well wild bike camper that was a lovely relaxing, scenic and interesting video of part of the beautiful Gower. I also have that tarp. I noticed that you had a small meal before bedtime so i presume you had a lunchtime meal at the Dolphin ? Not many humans around it seemed but there was friendly animals to chat to, thanks for sharing this lovely video, and i don't mind castles myself, take care 👏👋
Thanks for your view and feedback. I''ve not used the 3x3 since - need to figure out how to configure it for a fully closed 'tent' for the colder months. But do like how roomy it was inside. I had a locally produced pasty from the Happy Shopper store earlier in the day, which was enough to keep me going until my bread and soup. It was too hot for a pub meal, but I'd like to go back to the Dolphin around xmas time maybe?! You'd be surprised - people pop up everywhere. A whole family on a quad bike went down the slipway whilst I was exploring it (they were gathering fresh seaweed). later on - a couple and their dogs passed by my pitch. But everyone was lovely. 🙂
Fab to see Floyd again! I think he remembers his pal!
I hope so - in my head he does. I'd like to think he chooses to roost by me, rather than it just happening to be his favourite tree.🦚 Thanks for watching.
Nice little video, cuz, but butter on a sausage sarnie ........ really ? 😆😆😆
Haha...I had a comment about butter in my bacon baps recently too. I guess I've found a new way to trigger people (along with using tomato, not brown sauce) 🤣🥓🌭
@@WildBikeCamper Butter on a bacon bap is perfectly acceptable (I do it with mine ) 😋😋😋
Very nice video, not seen a video made by the Severn Bridge before very good . Sorry you got disturbed but hoped you slept well ? Very nicely cooked sausages by the way, shame about the onions , take care 👏👋
I didn't mind being disturbed too much (for once) as people were keeping their distance and being friendly - I didn't feel unsafe. Yes - wish I'd brought onions! Haha - next time. And appreciate you noticing I cook things properly! 😁🧑🍳
Thanks for the video, that was a great location. 👍
Thank you - I found it by accident - I was planning on pitching up on the cliff, but the bike took me here instead. She knows...
Nice camp. I've cycled across the other bridge to the welsh side but not that one. Looks lovely
Thanks! EDIT: 6/9/24 - Got my bridges wrong way round - I've lost count of the times I've walked/cycled the *1st crossing* (at Chepstow) - but there's no pedestrian access on the newer 2nd crossing (Caldicot; the one I camped under, but mixed up as the first in the video). The 2nd crossing is not safe for cycling or eBiking. Last time I did the route to Bristol from Chepstow, the main bike trail was out of use - so I had to cut through Tockington. Hopefully it's back in use now...
Hells yeah! Nicely done my guy - Was nice to meet you on the train and I hope you get a tonne of awesome adventures!
I remember our interesting conversation well...a natural and cheap way of preventing war, plus it would fix the economy! 😁🖖🪴
That view with the still untouched land has a proper Monty Pythons Holy Grail vibe to it. No motorways or vehicles..bet it sounds much the same as its looked in 700 years, fascinating. 🖖
There was the one thing that I can always hear, no matter where I am or how far I go. Motorbikes.
Well, thank you for a lovely Wibble around W(e)obbly Castle with narration! I have enjoyed catching up on some of your videos for the day. It's been so relaxing between housework and gardening! You should really look into making ASMR videos to help people sleep with such a calm, relaxing voice!....not saying you put me to sleep!! I love that you are yourself and not 'forcing' anything. Diolch
@@gromlynne3550 😊 Thank you very much for the nice comment. I've considered an ASMR themed camp - but the non-talking ones don't do very well! Maybe I could branch out into another channel? I'd be absolutely fine with being good at putting people to sleep. I listen to @pravinasmr and @ASMRKittyKlaw mainly. Shame there's no emojis for tingles or 'headrush'! Well - you're seeing a toned down version of me - my dark & twisted sense of humour might be a bit much for...most... Diolch yn fawr! 😆
Thank you for the tour of Weobley Castle it was very interesting. Many years ago I drove through Weobley on the way to Llangollen and noticed it was a pretty place with its buildings of Tudor style wooden beams. You have a soothing voice and I found myself relaxing to the point of sleep 😄 you should be a professional Narrator, thanks for sharing 👏👋
Thanks for your view and comment. I love castles, so expect another one like this at some point. I'll be back in the Gower to explore more too. Wish I'd done it sooner. Haha - I've been told a few times I've got a 'radio voice' - shame about the 'radio face' 🫣😄
Thanks for the video, that was a nice dd 3x3 tarp set up and I have used it many a time myself. I just like the open door feel so that you can look out and see the views. Very interesting railway stuff also, glad that they are preserving them. Keep on biking. 👍
I'll be honest - I had to watch various TH-cam videos when I got there, to remind me how to set it up like that. I much prefer a closed door, but on this occasion the weather and views were perfect. I love me a bit of railway history 🚂🛤️
I must admit I preferred the rawness of your earlier videos. This one was a history lesson not a wild camp.
I really appreciate your feedback. I thought because previous videos have not done very well, I wanted to try something new (and I enjoyed filming it). The next camp video I've already shot though, will be more to your liking I'm sure! :-)
I do enjoy these little history videos, the editing makes it so much easier to imagine it back in its day.
I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as i enjoyed exploring it all! Just playing with the format - trying to express my fascination with it all in different ways.
Another good video, mate, well edited. A little shorter this time, just an observation, not a complaint 😁😁😁
Thank you! 🙂They're likely going to get even shorter going forward - nothing I've posted in 6 months has done well, so need to change things up somehow - find what works...
@@WildBikeCamper Not too short though.
As a follow up to my camp in the Gower, would a narrated video of my wander around Weobley Castle be of interest? Please go the Community Tab and complete the poll!
Beautiful video....but......I think I prefer you talking into the camera and the natural sounds. However, it's not me making them so that's just my opinion. When you tarp camp do slugs crawl in over the groundsheet?
Thank you :-) Me talking to the camera doesn't seem to be bringing in views and subs - so thought I'd try something a bit different. Don't worry - you'll see my ugly mug in another one soon! If slugs do crawl over it, I don't notice. I've not experienced it yet. Probably too dry for them.
Hiya brother if Floyd sees this video he may well get jealous and upset that you didn't invite him along with you. Nothing worse than a peacock scorned. Take it easy mate. ✌😎Si.
Alas - my last video did very poorly. As much as I like Floyd, it seems some people don't like him (or me!). But I'll be back to see him soon.
I honestly didn't know we had wild peacocks here. Not surprised the squirrels preferred the French pastries over seed, though. 😂
Cardiff Castle used to have at least two for many years, but they kept wandering onto the road and holding traffic up! 🦚 There are lots of wild peacocks in the UK - heard them many times in the woods on my adventures over the decades. But never made 'friends' with one until now.
Thanks for the video, did you have two tarps joined up there, it looked very spacious ? Also I might be wrong, but was your stove upside down ? 👍
Hi there - I was using the 4.5m x 3m DD tarp overhead, and two smaller groundsheets from Home Bargains to lay on. The Famgee Stove Bracket was upside down, because the pot I use to boil water in, isn't stable on it - so I turn it over and it's solid. Plus I have a little extra clearance...
@@WildBikeCamper 👍 Thanks for the reply.
I appreciate your content - it inspired some of my latest video.
@@WildBikeCamper 👍👍
Good to see you and Floyd doing so well. He's like us keep away from raucous groups and watch floyd while listening to Floyd. See you soon brother. Si.
Yeah - we were both minding our own business, staying out of view 🖖
What you doing putting butter on a bacon sandwich!!!!???
Would have been a touch dry without it! I likes my meat well done :-)
@@WildBikeCamper Each to their own mate 🥓🧈👍
You should have seen how much butter I used to get through! I am a bit more calorie aware these days! 😉🖖
Sneaky little squirrel haha 😅
I think you'll find it's called a Tree Rat! 😁
@@WildBikeCamper Correct, Cuz. Fair piece of pork there, you'll never starve, will you ? 😆😆😆
Now - if it was small, red and bushy tailed - I've have been very happy to see it, and would have named it 'Tufty' 😆 I could stop eating for 3 days and still be okay! 🐖
Hello to Floyd again. Your videos are very peaceful and lovely to watch. It hadn't occurred to me to turn the trangia stand upside down. Does it work better that way? I'm off to the Peak district tomorrow camping but haave been looking at Red Rocks campsite near Margam. Any opinions? Maybe Floyd visits there too 😀
Well spotted - Floyd does live at Red Rock. Unfortunately - because there are a lot more people here and they know of him, their kids chase him around the woods - so he has become more secluded as a result in my opinion...compared to the winter months when I was on my own. PS: Yes - the little bracket holds the Trangia the other way - but it's not quite enough clearance for cooking on.
@@WildBikeCampermaybe I’ll visit red rock campsite in the autumn when the kids go back. I quite fancied woodland camping and it doesn’t look far from the train station to cycle
I have cycled from Pyle, Bridgend and Port Talbot to get there. It's never easy getting there or back due to regularly being let down by the railway service....but always worth it.
Which is the route with less cars?
@@bobalinga They are all via very busy main roads, but there are pavements almost the whole way on all 3 routes. Pyle is nearest, but very sporadic train services. In this video, my trains from Pyle were cancelled in the morning. I would have been waiting 6 hours. So cycled to Bridgend via the A48 for other train options...there's a tiny little 'path' the whole way...but none of the routes are for a 'noob'.
Sat here with a Bacardi and coke, on a Sunday afternoon, watching your video instead of that arrogant tosser Novak Djokovic ! No contest really 😁😁
Oh my...Bacardi and Coke...🤪 I went through a bit of a phase with that drink...had to give it up. Too nice!!! Ahh...I like arrogant Novak haha! I don't watch him play...I just appreciate that he is willing to go against narrative. That's brave...
@@WildBikeCamper Your vids are very well edited, Cuz, you have a talent, keep 'em coming👍👍👍
Thank you for noticing the editing. It's one of the main reasons I started the channel, as I was out of practice (by 30 years) and wanted to get back into it.
Don't be so downcast, Cuz, I'm loving your vids, keep them coming. As for the bloke chasing the geese away ............ what a dickhead !!
I know, right? He did it so they'd not scare the fish. I hope he didn't catch any! Glad you're liking the videos 😊 I've a few more coming soon...
