You should know this before coming to Karachi | Life in Pakistan
Today, I’m diving deep into my unfiltered thoughts on living in Karachi, a city that I describe as that one fun, unpredictable, very broke hot-mess friend you had in college. After spending a few months here, I have a lot to share about this vibrant metropolis that’s both thrilling and challenging.
Even though Karachi was once the government’s capital, Karachi has become the crime capital of Pakistan and is considered one of the most unlivable cities in the world. But how much of this is true? Can you visit here and have a lovely seaside holiday, or is it just a hotbed for phone snatching and crime?
Karachi is a city where cultural diversity thrives, yet it carries its burdens. It’s a place filled with contrasts and struggles that contribute to the rich tapestry of experiences the 19 million residents of this city share every day. This is hands down my favorite city in Pakistan. But in this video, I explore the dual nature of Karachi - a city that is as captivating as it is chaotic. As someone of Pakistani-Indian descent raised in the West, I’ve faced my fair share of adjustments and surprises here. From the delicious street food to the frustrations of navigating life as a woman in a society made almost exclusively for men.

Me and my wife both were born and raised in Chicago. My family and I love your videos! I'd like to make a few points on this video. 1."feeling restrictive about going outside alone" I just want to say this is subjective because another woman can complain that she's not able to drive by herself where she has to get a driver so she could feel safe when that's more of a luxury. A man accompanying you everywhere you go is how royalty is treated. In America overall there's so many hijabi women that are attacked on a daily basis physically or verbally. Just like you mentioned you have to be in specific areas to feel safe 2. "Flying cockroaches" these can also be found in the states and hotter areas. 3. "Staring problem" 😂 I could not agree more with this. I got so annoyed I used I started telling people why don't you take a picture or at least say Salam.

Interesting Vlog. Thanks for updating information about treatment of women. Pakistan does have blasphemy laws and so a mob can be called in an instant to lynch someone by a religious fanatic. Additionally, women in Pakistan have to conform to a strict dress and behaviour code as Pakistan is a patriarchal society and an Islamic country; I thought the Koran made this mandatory. Brown women in the West may not be aware of this so It's a good lesson for them.

My parents were born in Pakistan and I was born in England. They wanted me to visit Karachi so I could meet my family. When I landed the porter snatched my luggage and DEMANDED money from me. I snatched it back and walked off. He then proceeded to swear at me. So it wasnt a good start. The superpower the Pakistani's have is smelling a foreigner a mile away, even though I wear an abaya and hijab. I speak perfect urdu yet they can smell my British blood and sniff me out. How do they do that? They should work for the FBI! Your review is accurate but I'd like to add that it's NOT just staring!!! Its like they are undressing you with their eyes. Super creepy. Not forgetting me resembling the Michelin man with all those mosquito bites that were so severe that I ended up in hospital. The food gave me diarrhea so guess what? Yup several trips to the hospital again! On a positive note I lost a few kilos.... This is why I will NEVER go back to Karachi again. Home is home even if its a cardboard box. This review is not to upset the people of Karachi, its just my experience.

Would it be ok with you if I shared some of your comments in my next video? And the airport harassment is whole other level of aggravating. And they specifically target females traveling alone! Makes me so angry. Same thing happened to me while traveling in Egypt alone, with my two young kids. The guy even tried to separate my NINE year old little boy from me, to make him go stand in a "men's only" line. Next time, don't be shy about getting aggressive and loud with these fraud types.

It's an artificial place , like a parasite sucking the life blood of the rest of the country. If you think Islamabad is bad you haven't seen the rest of the country. @sachinnair91 has surely never even visited Pakistan and pretends to be be a know-all about the country. India has well established itself as the "RAPE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD" being very unsafe for women. The official published statistics of the Indian Government state that every 3 minutes a woman is raped in India... be it the Dehli bus rape/murder.. foreign nationals raped and murdered on Goa beach in India.. or the latest doctor rape / murder in Calcutta hospital.. it never stops for females. Most people dont even have toilets in their residence in India.. No sanitation.. no women hygiene.. it is clearly depicted in the own movies of India.. Toilet: ek prem katha and Padman.. India has the largest slum dwelling in the world where people live well below poverty levels... people sleep on the footpaths and sidewalks in all big cities in India.. which never happens anywhere in Pakistan... Indian RAW and Armed Forces are well known to illegally infiltrate Pakistani borders... a number of Indian spies have been caught over the years... be it Ravindra Kaushik who died in Pakistani jail, Sarabjit Singh, Airforce pilot Abinandan.. India never stops meddling with other country's affairs.. India tried to do the same with China but they faced huge defeat and humiliation at those borders. In Kashmir, India is well-known to kill innocent people with a curfew that is now lasting over four years.. they stop basic food and water to reach people there.. People die from hunger.. Everyone in the world is familiar with the prime minister of India who is well known as the "Butcher of Gujrat", the Indian state of Gujrat where thousands of innocent people were killed on his orders... There is no freedom for other religions where regularly innocent people are beaten by mobs even if they just carry beef.. Hardliners in India chant slogans outside places of worship of other religions.. these videoes are all over the internet... Gender disparity is a significant issue in India, with challenges ranging from societal expectations and traditional roles to violence against women and limited opportunities in various sectors. The caste system's remnants can still influence social dynamics and create inequalities in opportunities and treatment. The Indian Government fully supports this... Corruption is hugely prevalent in various sectors, including politics and business, is a significant problem, affecting governance and economic development. Inter-religious tensions and communal violence are a big concern, with many instances of sectarian conflicts impacting social harmony. Rapid industrialization and urbanization have led to significant environmental challenges, such as pollution and loss of biodiversity. Illegal, child marriage persists in many regions in India, affecting the education and health of young girls. There is a significant gap between the rich and poor, with socio-economic inequality affecting access to resources and opportunities. Navigating the bureaucratic processes is often very cumbersome and inefficient, affecting various aspects of daily life and business. Indian government were never able to provide authentic concrete evidence for 2008 Mumbai Attack that it was made from Pakistan to the United Nations, thats why they were not supported by any international legal tribunal.. whatever India says about people relating to this attack living in Pakistan are all wild guesses with no authentic evidence.. India is home to many large criminal syndicates in the world making direct influences and contributions to politics, cinema and economy... A number of authentic sources would expose that. @sachinnair91 seems to forget that there a huge number of Indians particularly from South India and the Punjab region who have left the country and even cancelled their Indian nationality to take nationality of other countries... This tells the gruesome truth of the security and social situation in India... India is home to the biggest scams in the world the latest being in Electoral Bonds... well explained here... th-cam.com/video/RJfqzUWZ0Bw/w-d-xo.html If you want to know the reality of India.. watch Dhruv Rathee (www.youtube.com/@dhruvrathee) he exposes all the nonsense that is happening in India... @sachinnair91 ... I guess people with glass houses should not throw stones.. Take care !

I stayed in Pakistan till 1980. It was Ankahee times. People were very open minded, less judgmental, people were respectful. Now pakistan is not livable . People are not honest. No law and order and no safety for anyone. Your phone can get snatched . Women cannot wear any gold items outside. If you are waiting on traffic signal , they can rob you from the car. The character of the whole nation is destroyed because if you have money basically you can get away with anything. One cannot even invest in properties because anyone can take over your property. Plus several people recently lost their life’s savings when the realtor sold them a property that was already owned by someone else. There is no democratic system , people can buy seats in politics. A lot of harrasment for women walking, driving and working in offices. Domestic violence cases are high on top. Can things be changed in pakistan? No one can answer . It take centuries to change a nation. It is much easier to raise kids in western countries or countries like Turkey than in pakistan. People follow religion blindly. Every year a new mufti appears with their own teachings. People mostly follow hindustani values than islamic values. Only in pakistan I saw citizens throwing trash in streets and roads which clogs the already clogged drainage system. The whole country is in chaos with kidnappings and robberies. On top of it the water, gas and electricity loadsheddings have made the citizens life miserable.

Excellent video sister. Jazakallah. Similar to you, I was born and brought up in the west (UK) and as a single British-Pakistani guy, I have been in Karachi for 3 months now. A few thoughts: *Safety - Even as a male, it's not safe. In Clifton (where you are) during the day, my British cousin got kidnapped last year. Alhamudilliah we paid the $0.5m dollar ransom, but it was horrible for him. I cannot even imagine what other parts of Karachi are like, let alone during the evening/night. *Freedom/convinence - Agree about Amazon, gadgets - I miss them so much. *Staring - I am a guy who wears shalwar kameez, but I get stares too. Everyone stares here. A lot. What surprised me, is that most of the stares I get are from girls/women. I lower my gaze, but the girls here do not. It's weird and it's not nice. I feel like I'm in a zoo. I hate it. *Hygiene - Pakistan generally has the worst hygiene in all places I have visited. Even the nice areas/places. It's nasty and wrong. *Culture - In the west, we will browse, select and purchase. In Karachi/Pakistan - even in the malls - as soon as you walk in, they ask what SPECIFICALLY do you want. I'm thinking, I don't know, because I just walked in. I cannot even cope with the shops where everything is behind the counter. *Queues/Etiquette - The British are known for their queues and manners. We form a line and wait our turn. No please/thanks = no help. In Karachi, nobody queues up. Not even in nice places. Nobody says 'please or thanks'. And don't get me started on other manners and common decency. *Litter - this bugs me - I'm thinking 'dude, there is literally a bin next to you'. Again this is in nice areas too. *Food - If you block out the hygiene issue, I agree, Karachi does have the best food ever. And we can eat everything, because it's Halal. *Alcohol/Drugs - Karachi has the worst drink and drugs culture I have ever seen (guys and girls). It saddens me - both from a health and religious perspective. Just a couple days ago, I helped a 'well to do' girl who was drunk and passed out. The alcohol smell was strong. Muree Brewery is the main culprit of cheap drink that's widely available and used. *Honesty - Does not exist in Karachi. Most people lie here and for no reason, and they think you cannot tell. I don't get it. I just smile and move on. Others will just break their promises and think nothing of it. I don't get it. *Getting harassed for visas - they don't get we were born in the west and we do not work for immigration - so we don't know the immigration rules. Every few minutes, someone will ask me (including well educated people) about visa rules for the UK. *Complaints about the cost of living - they think it's just a Pakistani problem and that if the government changes, or if they emigrate, it will be fine. I try to explain that it's a global issue. They don't get it. Now, having said all of this, I still see it as my country, I am still hopeful for a better future, and I do visit once a year if I can.

Great video! I will say, and I hope you don't take this the wrong way Saira but you seem to be living an affluent elite life in Karachi. Everything you talk about screams MONEY and I'm quite sure you're living the way the top 5 percent lives in Karachi. My point is, if you move to Karachi without much money, your experience will be very different from Saira's and likely a lot worse. I also noticed that you didn't mention political instability. No PM in Pakistan is allowed to finish his or her term. There is no proper democracy or representation of the people because the Army (Fauj) controls the government, regardless of who wins the election. This is also why far too much money goes to the Pakistani Army instead of going towards basic necessities like healthcare and infrastructure PTI has pledged to take control of Pakistan and implement sharia law and as such are conducting multiple attacks throughout Pakistan. Pakistan, through the sinister actions of its ISI, has made two enemies: Afghanistan and India. Afghanistan knows that Pakistan and it's ISI was supporting the USA in their war against the Taliban and as such, they're angry at Pakistan. Thus the Afghani Taliban are supporting the PTI. This makes it dangerous to live in Pakistan because you don't know where next the PTI will attack As for India, the Indian govt knows that Pakistan's ISI was behind the heinous 2008 Mumbai attacks, this much is proven. Even now, the people responsible for those attacks are living safely in Karachi, Islamabad etc. because the Pakistani govt shelters them. Thus the Indian govt is forced to send special agents to Pakistan to take them out. Again this places ordinary Pakistani residents in danger Let's not forget Pakistan's dire economic situation. Pakistan has borrowed so much money that it spends nearly half it's annual revenue in just paying back the loans and interest. Now, Pakistan is getting another IMF bailout which means more loans. Inflation and cost of living is sky high and most Pakistanis are leaving the country if they can, even if it means getting into dangerous overloaded refugee boats headed for Europe. Pakistan's economy is in the brink of collapse If you want to understand the Pakistani mindset better, please watch the "Candid with Lubna" youtube channel. @sachinnair91 ... I am sure you have never actually been to any parts of Pakistan.. India is now the well-established "Rape Capital of the World" ... according to Indian Government official statistics.. every 3 minutes a female is raped in India... even foreign tourists were raped in Goa and their bodies were left alone on the beach.. the latest being a young female doctor raped and murdered viciously in a hospital in Calcutta, India. The bus rape and murder in Dehli made huge headlines. India is solely responsible for the regular genocide in Kashmir... everyone in the world knows that.. plain open terrorism ! Even your prime minister is called "The Butcher of Gujrat" after what he did by killing thousands of innocent people in the Indian state of Gujrat.. lots of international media covered this. India has the largest slum dwelling in the whole of the world in Mumbai.. people there live well below the poverty line.. that was proven in the movie "Slum Dog Millionaire" nothing of that sort is there in any part of Pakistan.. there are multiple documentaries on the slum on youtube. There are lots of videos made by Indian Army in which they cry for hygienic food and clean water.. Indian RAW has been behind most of the criminal activities in Pakistan and lots of spies have been caught red-handed. The famous being Indian AirForce pilot Abhinandan who was shot down flying illegally within Pakistani Territory by the brave Army of Pakistan.. More Indian spies called Sarabjit Singh, Kulbushan Yadav were caught red-handed... Earlier Ravindra Kaushik who was leaking Pakistani secrets to RAW was caught and died in a Pakistani prison later on.. As far as sanitation is concerned.. most parts in India dont even have toilets in their houses.. remember the Indian film industry actually made a movie on it called "Toilet a prem katha"... Sanitation for women is the worse in India as compared to rest of the world.. that was shown in the Indian movie "Padman" ... Moreover, India has known to have the following issues prevalent in the culture : Gender-Based Violence and Discrimination: Gender inequality remains a pressing issue in many parts of India. Violence against women, including domestic violence, sexual harassment, and assault, continues to be a significant concern. Despite legal frameworks and advocacy, social norms and practices sometimes perpetuate gender discrimination. Caste-Based Discrimination: Although the caste system has been legally abolished, caste-based discrimination persists in various forms. Members of lower castes (Dalits) and other marginalized groups may face social exclusion, economic disadvantage, and discrimination in education and employment. Religious Extremism and Intolerance: Religious tensions and conflicts regularly arises between different communities. Instances of communal violence and intolerance have occurred, which undermine social harmony and contribute to societal divisions. Corruption and Bureaucratic Inefficiency: Corruption is prevalent in various sectors, affecting governance, public services, and business practices. This undermines trust in institutions and hinder effective development and progress. Economic Inequality: Despite rapid economic growth, there are significant disparities in wealth and access to resources. Poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and unequal access to education and healthcare are issues that affect many people, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Environmental Degradation: Rapid industrialization and urbanization have led to environmental challenges such as pollution, deforestation, and climate change impacts. Addressing these issues requires coordinated efforts and sustainable practices. Health and Sanitation Issues: Access to quality healthcare and sanitation facilities can be uneven, particularly in rural areas. Public health issues, including inadequate waste management and limited access to clean water, can impact quality of life. Child Labor and Exploitation: Despite legal protections, child labor remains a problem in some sectors, affecting children’s education and well-being. Efforts to combat this issue are ongoing but face various challenges. Indian Government was unable to produce any concrete evidence in the United Nations about 2008 Mumbai attacks that they were done by Pakistan. The ones talked about were just calculated guesses. @sachinnair91 Pakistani culture is far more safer than Indian environment. As they say people living in glass houses should not throw stones.. I guess you think twice next time when you talk about any negatives in Pakistan... I hope you have a good day !

My opinion is based on personal experience as an overseas person who has come here, and I notice stark differences between what life is like for women in public in other Muslim countries/the West, compared to here. Btw 99% of women here that I've spoken to here agree that there are no public spaces for women, and that they feel very dependent on their male relatives.

@@salqubeq5203 You bring up a really good point, I can explain how things are for the common person based on observations and talking to locals. Again, it's a bit difficult to get to know people since I'm living a super sheltered life here, but I will definitely keep this in mind for a future video. Thank you :)

@@sairathemusafir Good idea. For total exposure to life, you do need to get out of your "cocoon" life because it means you are not really immersed in reality there & are still living in the UK style life. Missed educational opportunity if you ask me!
