Phoebus Flies 2024 Region 8 Soaring Contest, Ephrata, WA
A short compilation of pictures and in-flight video from the recent Region 8 soaring contest held at Ephrata, WA. I managed (by God’s grace) to make it home every day, even if I finished last almost every day. The weather was challenging and the other contestants were good pilots. My comfort zone has been “well-stretched”. 🙂

Phoebus Declares a Task
มุมมอง 50121 วันที่ผ่านมา
My first declared task an AAT (Assigned Area Task). It was a flight full of adventure. This was a perfect day for it. However, there was a lot of unexpected sink around Waterville, and I almost landed out, and would have if it were not for the thermal that rescued me all the way up to 10,500'. Then, on my way back home, my battery got low. Fortunately the instruments still stayed on until I got...
Ephrata Dust Up 2024
มุมมอง 31228 วันที่ผ่านมา
The Dust Up this year at Ephrata had some fun flights. But the weather did not cooperate very well. Not every flight has to be “Epic”. It’s the hard days that help make us better pilots, and help prepare us for when it gets really good. Even so, a good time was had by all.
Phoebus 200km in Paradise
มุมมอง 1.2K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
I finally got a "proper" soaring day in the Paradise Valley just N. of Yellowstone National Park in my Bolkow Phoebus A1. It was AMAZING! And this was a relatively "modest" day, according to the locals. The corner of the canopy popped open in-flight, allowing a jet of cold air onto my L shoulder and face. By the end of the flight I was freezing cold, and ready to land. I'm still stretching my l...

Back in the Paradise Valley again (just N of Yellowstone National Park). Had to take a high tow to connect with the "house thermal" at Dexter Peak, but it was worth it. Last Phoebus Flight of 2022
มุมมอง 344ปีที่แล้ว
The forecast wasn't even worth rigging the glider, but I had the time and the desire to fly. And I got over 1.5hr flight out of it. The beginning of the video highlights something I only realized after reviewing the video footage when editing. If the rope had broken after the other aircraft was on final, I would have had a head-on collision course after making my 180 turn. I may have had to mak...

2022-First Year Flying the Phoebus
มุมมอง 2.6Kปีที่แล้ว
A brief review of the year flying my Phoebus A1. Turned out to be an amazing year, with dreams come true. Started off with training and familiarization flights at Williams Soaring Center in CA, then came home to MT and flew the Mission Mountains and Valley, with a one-day excursion to the Flying Y airport in the Paradise Valley in S/Central MT, then back to the Missions again. I have been truly...
Floating Along the Missions
มุมมอง 504ปีที่แล้ว
Trying something different for this video footage is sped up 8x, and the whole flight is included. Had another fun flight, floating around the Mission Mountains again-3h:12 min this time. The soaring forecast looked like it was not worth launching, and the predicted lift was going to be over the center/east side of the Missions. So I took a high tow to 5,000 AGL (8,000ft). There was juuuust eno...

The forecast for today’s weather seemed to deteriorate every time I checked it this week, to the point where I nearly gave up in discouragement, and almost didn’t fly today. However, when I looked outside, I saw a few scattered cumulus clouds, and decided to go anyway. I got a late start, but it was worth it! Took a 3,600’ tow, scratched around for 20 min or so, all the time loosing altitude, u...
Back in Paradise
มุมมอง 364ปีที่แล้ว
After many days not being able to fly due to work and weather, we finally made it back out to the Flying Y in the Paradise Valley, just north of Yellowstone National Park. The haze from the wildfire smoke blunted the thermals, but I was still able to enjoy an over 2hr flight.
Playing with friends
มุมมอง 340ปีที่แล้ว
It was a blue day, and the forecast was not that promising. However, we decided to fly anyway, and had a fantastic time. Thermals were generally weak, but seemed to improve as the day progressed. The performance difference between the Phoebus and the ASH 31 was dramatic. Even the PIC 20 walked away from me at times. But it was a fun time with friends. A pleasant way to spend 3h:15.
3hrs Going Nowhere
มุมมอง 188ปีที่แล้ว
What was expected to be 20min sled ride, turned out to be over a 3hr local flight, milking a "house thermal" over and over again, and gaining time and experience with my glider. It was surprising how late in the day the thermal was still working (well-after 7pm).

Nice video John!
@@charleslongley7862 Thanks! It was a lot of fun. A GREAT experience.
Great video in the old Phoebus A from a guy who used to fly the old Std Libelle. I bet we can out thermal today's ships costing 20 times as much, ha. I don't think about Washington State having desert-like terrain, but the eastern section looks like a great area for lift. In my much younger days, I would make an annual sojourn with a couple of other pilots out to Marfa, TX, where I did a couple of tasks as a group, but it definitely adds anxiety.
@@jamesa5720 Thanks James. My Phoebus will climb with a Libelle, if I do my part. 😉 Eastern WA, especially the area around Ephrata, is a FANTASTIC area to grow your XC legs. Lots of good land-out fields and thermal markers like dust devils when down low. The soaring is pretty darn good!
Awesome video, John. Looking forward to next year's competition already!
@@obiwanrazzy Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
John, Your video made me feel so homesick. Since 1999 through 2022 I participated in the R-8 comp. Many great memories. I am glad you flew the contest. My first one was the best soaring education I ever received. My experience each year added to the previous one and eventually I got fairly good at it. Not on the winners circle much but there were times I did not make so many mistakes and did come in second and third. Had I been able to continue soaring I might have finished first.
Thanks for the encouragement! I'm hoping to participate in many more future R8 events. I agree that it is one of the best soaring educational events you can attend. I learned SO much!
Thanks for a very nice video, John!
@@Rocky6able Thank you. It was fun producing it, and even better collecting the footage. 😉
On top of everything, the Music! Please provide links!
@@AdrianMelia-0 Thanks Adrian. Music is from the “Sound Tracks” available music in iMovie. Tracks are: 20 Miles North Big Sky Image Enchancementalist
Thanks, John, the gliding is, of course, magnificent. I'm so glad that you're taking that Phoebe's to places it might never have gone were it not for your efforts.

John! Really enjoyed seeing your videos. Nicely done! Love the WeGlide content mixed in. Hope to join you in the air one of these days!
@@SteveMinar thanks Steve. I hope so too.
Nice work: thanks for sharing.
Thanks. It’s fun!
Wow, John! Great video. I almost bought a Phoebus back in 2013.
Thanks. It’s been fun to fly. Lots of “bang for the buck”.
What software did you use to render the flight path?
I did a video screen capture from WeGlide 3D flight replay. One of the features that the SSA makes available to us through the partnership with WeGlide. www.weglide.org/flight/336650
Dear John. Nice weather, nice flight. I have got a Phoebus C, and I would like to ask how much force is on aileron when you deflect the ailerons? I feel relatively big force on it in the air. On the ground easy to move. Thank you very much! Best regards, Szabolcs
You may notice I often fly with both hands on the joystick. This is for two reasons: elevator is very pitch-sensitive and light, so this gives me more control. The ailerons are quite heavy in flight. I would say it is similar to the G103 I have flown-light elevator, heavy ailerons, just more so. The rudder is also very heavy and responds slowly, but once it starts to respond, it is a big response. It is a big rudder on the Phoebus.
Hi John. Excellent flight . It must be quite rewarding to fly this classic glider that you restored. Watching enviously from fozen Canada
Thank you sir. A little inspiration for the warmer months, posted from frozen Montana. 😉
Great flight John. Yeah it's tough when 13k seems low, right?!
Thanks Target. Yep, at times 13K seems low. But learning to trust your flight computer and knowing you have glide back to your airport is very reassuring. But this comes with experience, and knowing you have the right data set in your flight computer.
Wow ... Beautiful !!! Thank you John. I really enjoyed every single second.
It was fun editing the video, but even more fun collecting the footage. 😉
Congrats on a nice flight! As you get more comfortable with XC soaring, you'll be able to take days like this and easily do 300-500kms. Was this your January 1st flight? If so, I'm surprised at how little snow is on the ground out there!
Thanks Noel. This flight was on 9/17/23. I’m really looking forward to more and longer XC flights. 🙂
What O2 system do you use?
A first-gen Mountain High.
Your gliders haunted that vario sounds like a screaming banshee . Isn’t that annoying?
I no longer use that audio Piep vario. I now have a LX Nav S80, which I MUCH prefer.
Nice job on the restoration John. It's nice to see people restoring these old birds to their former glory .The Phoebus is one of the most aesthetically pleasing designs.
Thanks. I wish I could do more.
Spectacular scenery there!
Yes indeed! Can’t wait to go back again. 😁
Where did you get the tow plane ?
It belongs to Big Sky Soaring at the Flying Y Ranch airport in the Paradise Valley, just north of Yellowstone National Park.
That vario would drive me crazy! I have replaced my old cambridge beep vario (same thermo risistor technology, same nervous squeeking sound, but not as bad as yours! (check my older YT videos!)) with an LXNAV S80 a few years ago that I have given a pretty large dead band, Much better and relaxing than this thing LOL! But amazing views and good to see these old ships still fly so good. I have a Mini Nimbus from 1977, still flying clubclass competition with her, and doing amazingly well. This binding aileron, good call to go back, I had once a buzzing sound from sealing tape departing my Mini Nimbus, at the time I had no idea what it was, I was on the ground in no time, but was flying just locally so just one or 2 miles from the airfield. Keep on flying your Phoebus! Its a good sailplane with a huge money to fun ratio! ;-)
Thanks for the encouragement. I have since replaced the Cambridge vario with a LX Nav S80 as well. I MUCH prefer it! I also added a PowerFlarm Core, which talks nicely to the S80. Nice to be able to see other traffic on the S80 as well. This can be seen in some of my newer YT videos.
@@johnfoster1201 Ok, much better!!. a few weeks ago I replaced my old red box flarm with a LXNav PowerMouse, which includes an ADSB receiver as well. Much better range now. Of course also connected with the S80 and via Bt the S80 is connected with my Android smartphone running LK8000.. I fly competition with this setup!
The video would be better without music. Simply the noise of the wind and the beeping of the variometer..
Thanks for your input. I'll keep that in mind when I'm editing my next video. Thanks.
Why did the flight at 9:19 not count? My Silver was 1000M gain, 50KM distance and 1HR duration...but that's from Condor.
A Silver Badge in real life has 3 parts: 50km distance, 1000m altitude gain, and a 5hr duration. They don’t all have to be done in the same flight, fortunately. I don’t think Condor requires the 5hr duration, but could be wrong.
Just getting back into Condor and I see you killing it on the leaderboards while still getting IRL flights and editing videos.
Flying is fun, whether in Condor or IRL. 😁
Always fun no matter what! Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure. You're absolutely right!
Yikes, what a super job and now you have a glider that fits you like a well made glove. At the start was that just dust on the canopy or had it uv misted ? Did it clean up, polish out or need replacing ?
Originally when I picked it up, it was paint overspray on the canopy. I had to polish it out. The canopy is not perfect now, but definitely useable and a LOT better.
Superb Jon. I really look forward to watching you fly.
Thank you! I look forward to getting many more hours of footage. 😉
@@johnfoster1201 Bonjour John, tes images sont très belles, mais seront beaucoup plus agréables à regarder quand tu auras fait des coupures dans tes prises de vues: il est insupportable de devoir regarder du fil accéléré pendant 13 mn ...!!
@@francisnonain4430 Thank you for your input.
Wow, a vario audio based on a Theromin. It would be like sitting through the soundtrack from a 1950s science fiction movie. 🤣
Haha. For sure! Modern varios certainly have a less annoying sound.
Correction: HORROR movie 🙂
Double speed!! whats the point!!
Some people don’t like to watch long videos.
I did the similar on our way smaller hill in LKPN, Czech Republic. One hour flight, was even possible to jump to wave! But as it was only training flight with instructor, we did not try too hard :)
I’m looking forward to when we will do training flights here.
Wonderful again John. I made a video in MSFS 2020 in the AS33 Me inspired by your flights around Ronan.
I saw that one! Very nice.
True. One of our sons did about 260km yesterday (here in NZ) on what others described as an average day, with a low cloudbase. Pretty much what he said, except that he went out and flew for distance.
"Fly when you have the time, not when the weather report is supposedly good", is what I say.
Wonderful!
Thank you!
Man that Vario sounds like a histeric choking cat.
Haha. You’re right. Pretty amazing technology for the time though, right? But I’m glad to have something better in the cockpit now.
So good to see you starting with the angels and fulfilling one of your deep longings! One day I trust I’ll be flying around with you in the heavens😂 without a vehicle!!! God Bless you John, so glad you finally got your baby up there!
Thanks Fred
Wir hatten einige Jahre einen Phoebus C, damit zu gleiten prima! Im Gebirge zu drehen war nicht immer das Gelbe vom Ei. Und dann der Bremsfallschirm!! Trotzdem danke :)
Fortunately I don’t have to deal with the drogue parachute with this glider. The spoilers work very well on the 15m wing. But I’ve heard they “anemic” for the 17m wing. It’s amazing what an extra 2m of wingspan can do, isn’t it?
Another cell phone ready to knock out some teeth in a neg G.dive.
How often does that happen? I've never heard of it happening before, but I imagine its possible.
Lift all over , it’s certainly not Britain.
It was such a promising day! I was so bummed to have to go back due to this mechanical problem.
love the end bit, where you are trying to keep the wings flying!
Thanks. With enough headwind it is good practice to keep your reaction time fast.

I'm not able to translate this comment, so not sure how to respond. Sorry.
brilliant video!!
Thank you.
Hello, how is the phoebus sizewise? Would 186 cm and 110 kg "small" person fit?
I’m about 185cm. I had to move the rudder pedals all the way back, and rebuild the instrument panel to make sure the cut-outs for the legs were high enough that my legs didn’t hit it. But I fit without hitting my head on the canopy. With parachute, I’m about 90kg. My elbows are against the cockpit walls, which somewhat limits my arm movements, but I’m able to still move the joystick through its full range. It’s tight, but doable for me. You’d have to “try it on” for yourself to see how it would work for you. Also, my glider has some damage history, which has added weight to it, which has cut down its max pilot weight to 95kg. Watch out for that.
@@johnfoster1201 Thanks.
@@josefsoltes8572 You're welcome.
Nice one John
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
I think Phoebus means “enormous rudder” in Latin.
Haha 😂. It certainly has a very big rudder.
Those top and bottom brakes caused so many leakage problems they had to set them back so far towards the trailing edge, they became ineffective especially at high speed. It’s such a shame fully sealed top fitted brakes hadn’t been developed when the Phoebus was built because in the air, it was very nice to fly, although I only flew the 17m version with about 90hrs on type.
Apparently, the effectiveness of the spoilers on the 15m version is very different than on the 17m version. Mine are VERY effective, and other A and B model owners have reported the same to me. On the 17m (C model)-not so much. Thus the need for the drogue chute.
Nice! I'm into my second syndicate, on the basis that I can't fly the glider all the time and it's nice to divide the bills in two when they arrive.
Very nice! That’s a good way to spread out the costs.
That is one interesting vario tone for sure. You're a better man than I am, I try and turn mine down pretty low on tow to reduce the distractions. Seems like I can hear a second vario as well. Are you running two?
There is the museum piece “Piep-Vario” that makes the harsh squeal, and then an audio beeping from XC Soar running on the Android Phone.
HAHAHAHAHAH like R2D2 was high on crack
Great to see that you keep this Plane working... Greetings from Mendig. What Place do you Fly?
